A tricky hand, and yet by following the elementary principle of getting one's trump out, it was eminently amenable to being brought home. Declarer willy-nilly won the heart lead, and led a low spade to the Q and A East returned a heart, ruffed by declarer, who now cashed a diamond and led a low spade that was taken by West. Cashed a diamond? That lead had no rhyme or reason. Declarer didn't thereby shift the lead or work toward a ruff. Just no reason, and it was his undoing. For West went up on the second spade lead and continued diamonds himself! And do you see what that does?
Actually, declarer isn't dead yet, for he could have pursued diamonds. West ruffs in (probably), but declarer overtakes, drawing the last trump without using one in the closed hand. So now he can cash a couple of clubs, ruff a club and cash the diamonds. But he didn't see it. Instead, he cashed the A of clubs! Another diversion from his primary goal, and now can't make his contract. West ruffs the third round of clubs for the third trick for the defense. No, they didn't set it but they might as well have. Declarer got 10.34%, while those making 5 got 63.79! That has to be about the biggest spread for an overtrick I've seen!
I've mentioned this before: your punishment for not getting an overtrick is going to be directly proportionate to how easy it is was to garner. Here it was a simple matter had declarer not been sidetracked from getting out the defensive trump with that silly A of diamods lead that did nothing for the hand, or rather, nothing good for the hand.
Another declarer, the one who got a spade lead, forced out the A, now a shift to the A of hearts and declarer went to the A of clubs! ! ! ! I say again and again: keep away from established winners you've always got access to unless you have a positive reason (and to be sure, there are plenty of positive reasons, but not here). Declarer is loaded for bear in the side suits and only needs to get out the trump. Cashing the club ace is about as useful here as cashing the A of diamonds by the other declarer. However, I doubt if that's what did declarer in. Lemme see. Oh! Declarer ruffed a heart! This guy's got suicidal tendencies. That's what he doesn't want to do, the only declarer here who didn't get a heart lead. And I've gotta believe that that ruff is what took declarer beyond recovery. Lemme see. Back to the K of clubs, then the Q, ruffed by West for the . . . well, not setting trick, but as above, it might as well have been. I'll warrant ye that many a declarer going down one has fared better than 10.34%. Just totally senseless plays. Declarer doesn't need to chance an uneven club break. He doesn't need the third round of clubs. Diamonds split evenly. And if they didn't, then declarer would want to see if clubs are 3-3 for 3 diamond sluffs.
One more: Heart to the A, spade to the J and A, heart ruffed, spade to the K and a diamond return. So far, so good. Declarer has only one spade in the closed hand, but that's all he needs to go to dummy's Q, drawing the last trump from the defense and now coming back to the closed hand to run diamonds. That's what the first declarer could have done if he hadn't taken that totally unnecessary diamond lead. But this one went a step further. Instead of drawing the last trump, he tried to run the diamonds when someone had to be out at trick 3. Ah, but luck was with him, for he could simply overruff, cash a couple of clubs, ruff a club and claim. But on West's ruff of the third round of diamonds, declarer sluffed a club and he too won the battle (making his contract) but lost the war (10.34% matchpoints)!
Getcher trump out! Well, usually. Yes, there are reasons for not drawing trump (just yet). A lot of 'em, and indeed, this hand has prompted me to initiate a new category, to wit: Reasons for Not Drawing Trump. Nevertheless, Getcher trump out is the basic command, which you delay only for positive reasons. I cannot draw trump just yet because. . . fine. Or to put it another way, if all side suits are solid and need no development, I can't think of a sound reason for not drawing trump.
