Kevin & Lucy's First Kiss

Kevin had invited Felicia to dinner at the Lighthouse; As they sat down to eat, Lucy started noisily banging on the door. Kevin was furious with her but opened the door to her anyway. She was frantic because she had tried to hire Mac to investigate Katherine Bell (who was engaged to Ned, and who had convinced Ned to make her president of Deception), and Mac had refused. Lucy and Felicia fell into a gripe session about Katherine while an increasingly miffed Kevin was ignored by both of them. Felicia unexpectedly agreed to take Lucy's case, and decided to leave immediately to get started. Kevin tried to kick Lucy out too, but she refused to go, instead sitting down to try Felicia's plate of pasta.

When we return, Lucy is alone in the living room, pacing the floor and ranting about the fact that Kevin left her alone in the house. The door slams - Kevin is back.

Kevin: "Lucy, you're still here."

Lucy: "Do you know, that is the rudest thing one human being can possibly do to another human being. You just left me waiting here for you."

Kevin: "I didn't ask you to wait - I asked you to leave."

Lucy: "And I heard you, and you were furious with me, so I couldn't leave while you were still so mad at me. Are you still?"

Kevin: "Not as."

Lucy: "Good. Then I'm glad I stayed. Where did you go?"

Kevin: "For a walk. Lucy, we really have to come to some kind of an understanding about these unexpected visits of yours."

Lucy: "Oh, okay, if it's such a big deal to you, I will try to do better. I will. But, see, I'm sort of this spontaneous person, you know, and - you ought to try it some time."

(Lucy turns her back on Kevin and walks a short distance away from him. He takes her advice, and suddenly walks up very, very close behind her. She is rattled; she turns to face him,)

Lucy: "What I was just trying to say - "

Kevin: "Yes?"

Lucy: "Well, I just tend to react, you know, in a moment, and when my whole world is falling apart..."

Kevin: "Mmm.... go on...."

Lucy: "I just want to run to you as fast as I can."

(They were already standing pretty close together, but Kevin moves in another step.)

Kevin: "Why?"

Lucy: "Because you're my friend?"

Kevin: "That's it? That's the only reason?"

Lucy: "What do you want from me?"

Kevin: "I want you to tell me the truth."

Lucy: "It's not the only reason. It's because you don't judge me, even when you think I'm wrong. And because you think I have a good heart, and it makes me think I have a good heart too. And it makes me feel like a better person and not such a horrible thing. And because sometimes when you look at me, I think you see my soul."

Kevin: "Try looking back, Lucy."

Lucy: "I should go, get out of your hair."

(Lucy starts to leave; Kevin moves sideways to block her way.)

Kevin: "Well, would you like to stay for dessert?"

Lucy: "You asked me to leave, so I wouldn't dream of that, remember?"

Kevin: "Oh, I see, now you're punishing me."

Lucy: "You deserve it."

Lucy brushes past Kevin, heading for the door. In an impulsive move, Kevin reaches out as Lucy walks by, wraps one arm around her waist, and pulls her close to him. It seems that they're going to kiss, but they stop just short of that. They stare at each other for a long moment, and then Kevin murmurs:

Kevin: "Be careful on your way home."

Lucy: "Good night."

Kevin releases Lucy, who heads for the door somewhat unsteadily as Kevin watches. Outside, she stops to catch her breath. Inside, Kevin expels a gust of air. He walks very gingerly over to the sofa, and carefully lowers himself to a sitting position.

Later, the doorbell rings again. Kevin answers it - it's Lucy, once again.

Lucy: "You missed your cue. Aren't you going to yell at me?"

Kevin: "Well, I haven't decided yet. Lucy, why are you here?"

Lucy: "Here - I know it, I know it. You know, after all we went through, here I show up again, and I didn't call first, did I? But I intended to call first - and actually I picked up a phone and I actually did dial...." (Lucy goes on to explain that she called the Port Charles Hotel, where Kevin lived till recently, by mistake and then couldn't remember his new phone number.) "... so I thought I'd take a chance, you know, and show up again. Are you furious with me?"

Kevin: "This couldn't wait until tomorrow?"

Lucy: "Well, if it could, do you think I would have risked another eruption?"

Lucy: "Well, so?"

(Kevin motions her in. They walk into the living room.)

Kevin: "Lucy, you're in, you're out. You come, you go. You're starting to make me dizzy."

Lucy: "Well, that serves you right because turnabout is fair play."

Kevin: "What does that mean?"

Lucy: "I don't know; you're the expert."

Kevin: "No, no, no, no, no - you say it."

Lucy: "You never did tell me what was for dessert."

Kevin: "Oh, darn - I put it in the freezer."

Lucy: "Can't you heat it up?"

Kevin: "Maybe, with a little cooperation."

Lucy: "Why do I have this feeling that we're not on the subject of food anymore?"

Kevin: "You asked me some thing earlier; now it's my turn. What do you want from me, Lucy?"

Lucy: "I told you - dessert."

Kevin: "What about after dessert?"

Lucy: "We'll just have to see when the time comes; I couldn't possibly think on an empty stomach."

Kevin: "Okay, Lucy, here's the way it is around here tonight. I'm not in the mood for games, or hiding behind banter that doesn't mean anything later when you try to break it down. I don't want to hear a word about Damian or Tony or Katherine, or all the strange things they like to do to each other. If you want to be with me, then just be with me. And before the night is over, I want you to get to a point where you can look me in the eye and admit to the real reason you came back here tonight. Is that understood?"

Lucy: "Goodness, how am I possibly supposed to remember all those silly rules?"

Kevin: "Are you staying or going?"

Lucy: "You know something, you are extremely attractive when you get so bossy. You get this imperious look on your face like we're all so very lucky to be in the same world with you....... Staying."

(A megawatt smile lights up Kevin's face. When we rejoin them later, they are wandering around the living room holding wine glasses.)

Lucy: "This has been the nicest evening. Your house is divine, and the food was delicious, and the wine is superb, and the music is just perfect. And then, there's you.

Kevin: "Don't I rate an adjective?"

Lucy: "You are amazing."

Kevin: "Amazing is good."

Lucy: "I am serious. You think I'm kidding, but it's true. If you had any idea how crummy I felt before I got here tonight.... I spent the evening - never mind."

Kevin: "All right, out with it."

Lucy: "No, no, I can't because it would go against one of your rules."

(They sit on the sofa, turned sideways to face each other.)

Lucy: "But, on the other hand, if you were to allow me to break one of your rules, I could answer that question that you asked me earlier about why I'm really here tonight."

Kevin: "That's a fair exchange."

Lucy: "I was with Damian tonight, and I realized something. You know, all this time I thought that he was good for me. 'Cause he's very charming, and he makes me laugh, and he came along at a time in my life when I needed to laugh so very much. But stuff has happened - the bet, and Bobbie and Tony..... and you."

(A brief pause. A tentative smile comes across Kevin's face as he continues to listen attentively.)

Lucy: "So now I can't seem to look at him in the same way. You know, he's charming, and he says all those things that I think I really want to hear, and when I'm with him I feel hollow, and when I leave him I feel just less, somehow. And then there's you. You seem to say all the things that I do not want to hear, and you make me look inside myself, which is one thing I really hate to do. But when I leave you, I always feel better. So, there, I told you. I really wanted you to know that."

(They ever-so-slowly move closer to each other, and the dialogue gets softer and more intimate.)

Kevin: "Thank you."

Lucy: "What did I do?"

Kevin: "You told the truth."

Lucy: "That's what you do for me."

Kevin: "And I always will, even if it hurts."

(Kevin moves closer to Lucy. He reaches out and smooths her hair away from her cheek.)

Kevin: "I like the way you look in my house."

(Lucy moves closer to Kevin)

Lucy: "Kevin?"

Kevin: "Yes?"

Lucy: "When, when, when are you going to kiss me?" (Kevin and Lucy's faces move towards each other gradually as Kevin whispers the next three words:)

Kevin: "Right...... this...... second."

They kiss - a gentle, tentative kiss. They pull back just a bit and look into each other's eyes. They move together again, and this time there is nothing gentle or tentative about what happens. They sink against the sofa back, kissing passionately, until they finally stop, their faces still close together (in fact, they rub noses). They gaze into each other's eyes, both overwhelmed by what just happened. Kevin's voice is husky as he asks:

Kevin: "More wine?"

Lucy: "Please."

Kevin: "Sure."

Grateful for the chance to buy some time and figure out what on earth just happened, Kevin gets up and takes their wine glasses over to the table. Lucy is a little out of breath; she looks astonished but pleased by this amazing turn of events. Kevin, before pouring the wine, looks over at Lucy scared to death.
