Kevin, Lucy, and Katherine's Birthday Party
Kevin is lying on the couch in his office, poised to dictate notes into a tape recorder, but saying nothing at the moment. Lucy bursts in and doesn't see him at first.
L: "Kevin?"
K: "Over here."
L: "What are you doing?"
K: "Dictating."
L: "I didn't hear anything."
K: "Well, that's because some of us like to think before we speak, Lucy. Come here."
(Kevin continues to lie on the couch, but he slides back to make room for Lucy to sit, which she does. She is a little surprised by the intimacy of the gesture.)
L: "I know what you're doing. You're brooding again. You have been for weeks." (Lucy gently strokes his hair and face.) "You know, at first I thought if I just ignored this lousy mood of yours it would go away. But it didn't. So then I thought, well, it can't last
that long. But, Kevin, it's lasted too long - I'm getting worried about you. Don't you like me anymore?"
K: "It's not you - well, not all of it."
L: "Well, then what is it?"
K: "A phase. I go through them occasionally. It's probably genetic."
L: "I don't believe that."
K: "What can I say?"
L: "I don't know. What do you say to Felicia?"
(So much for intimacy. Kevin rolls his eyes and gets up off the couch.)
L: "Well, I'm sure she knows exactly what is going on with you. Why do you tell her everything and you send me to my room?"
K: "Lucy, if you're trying to pick a fight with me, I advise you to
reconsider. I'm working on a very short fuse these days."
L: "Which is exactly the reason I came here today. Because you have been holed up in this dreadful office thinking God knows what dreadful thoughts, I hate to even imagine. So you are going to stop that right this minute and you are going to come to a party with me, and refusing is not an option."
(Kevin looks at Lucy, considering things for a minute. Then he asks:)
K: "Whose party?"
L: "Well, that's sort of the part you have to get past."
K: "Lucy, if you're going to tell me Damian is having some bizarre
celebration in his hospital room - "
L: "Oh, no, no, no, of course not. It's almost worse."
(They say the name together:)
K/L: "Katherine."
L: "It's her birthday."
K: "Forget it."
L: "No, it would give us a chance to just spend a little time together. Kevin, don't you miss me?"
K: (grudgingly) "Occasionally."
L: "Don't you miss... this?"
(Lucy moves in for a kiss. Judging from Kevin's reaction, and from the additional kisses which follow, it is safe to assume that he misses it very much indeed.)
K: "What about Luke Spencer?"
L: "What about him? Oh, are you kidding, he wouldn't show his face at a place like this!"
K: "Smart man."
L: "Doc, come on. What do you say?" (Lucy moves in close enough to kiss Kevin again, but stops just short.) "No Luke, no Damian, just us."
K: "I'm going to hate myself in the morning, aren't I?"
L: "It's black tie; pick me up in one hour." (On her way to the door, she turns back.) "Oh, and, by the way, I will be the lady in red."
K: "That figures."
Lucy leaves, but she stops briefly right outside the door, looking
exultant, before rushing off. Later, we see Kevin and Lucy at the party, which is being held at the Outback. Lucy is indeed in red, and Kevin looks fabulous in his tuxedo. Mac approaches them.
K: "Mac! Well, are you as surprised to see me here tonight as I am to be here?"
M: "Probably not. I know how persuasive Lucy can be."
L: "I didn't think you'd noticed, Mac."
M: "Oh, yeah, Lucy. In fact, I've noticed quite a lot. In fact, I've
noticed how you like to make dramatic statements in Port Charles. Take Scott and Katherine's wedding, for example."
L: "Well, that was one of my greatest hits."
M: "I'd appreciate it if you would spare us an encore." (to Kevin) "Use your influence, would you? Like, try hypnosis. Excuse me."
(he leaves.)
K: "All right, Lucy. What is it you're not telling me, and why am I
suddenly developing a case of vertigo? I know that look, Lucy.
You're planning something, and I'm going to wish that I never met you."
L: "No, Kevin, not this time. You are going to love it. Do you want to know why? I'll tell you why. Because this has to do with truth, which is your stock in trade. You know, Doctor, I am learning so very much from you."
K: "I accept no responsibility for whatever it is you are planning to unleash in here tonight. It is obvious that I have no influence
over you whatsoever."
L: "That's not true. You influence me more than you'll ever - In
fact, you send me into flights of fancy that would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and salute the flag."
K: "How? I'm intrigued. Tell me more."
L: "Remember I told you a while back that I had a very vivid
imagination? I will share one or two of those fantasies if you
promise me to be a very good boy and have fun tonight."
K: "I think I can manage that."
Katherine arrives soon afterwards. Not long thereafter, Ned drags Lucy off for a brief conversation. Felicia's investigation had turned up some dirt on Katherine, and Lucy was planning to make it public at the party. Ned asks her not to do so, explaining that he has the same information, but he isn't quite ready to use it. In return for Lucy's silence, Ned offers her reinstatement as head of Deception, much to Lucy's delight.
She rushes back to Kevin's side.
L: "You are going to be so proud of me. Take me to some far corner where I want to bare my soul."
K: "Frankly, I'd rather see you bare something less spiritual, but
we've got to start somewhere. Come with me."
L: "Lead the way, Doc."
They soon find out Ned's reason for wanting to wait to drop the bombshell about Katherine when Lois - the other Mrs. Ashton - pops out of Katherine's birthday cake.
