Rescue

Our scene opens at the Outback. A party in honor of Maxie's recovery from the heart transplant is in full swing at the Outback.

Outside, Lucy is with Damian.

D: "How about I buy you a drink?"

L: "Can you say, social suicide? No, thank you."

D: "That surprises me. Since when have you been so worried about what other people think?"

L: "There, that shows you - you don't know me very well at all. Do you know what is going on on the other side of this window? Well, there is a party in full swing for Maxie. And do you know who's on the guest list? Well, there's Bobbie. And Tony. And Lucas. And Felicia. And Kev - KEVIN? Why didn't I see that coming?"

D: "See what coming?"

L: "You know, I used to not need a building to drop right on my head. She probably got him to bring her."

D: (completely confused) "Who?"

L: "Kevin! She probably didn't even have to twist his arm."

D: "Oh, well, now, if you're going to bleed over Kevin, I'll -"

L: "What a creep! What a big, fat creep! I can't believe this. You know, he didn't even have the decency to ask me if perhaps I needed a night out. He's very well aware of the mess I'm involved in with Katherine. And there's Felicia - she gets one little hangnail, and there he comes running with a pair of tweezers! I hate being taken for granted! I hate it, and he doesn't even know me well enough to take me for granted - you don't!"

(This last was hissed as she glared through the window at an oblivious Kevin.)

D: "Lucy, my eyes are glazing over."

L: "You know what, it's time for Doctor Collins to get his wake-up call. He is so insufferably arrogant." (Lucy calms herself and continues) "Yes, Damian, I would like to have a drink with you."

D: "Let me think - how flattered am I, on a scale of 1 to 2?"

L: "Oh, first, I, you know - "

Lucy grabs her compact from her purse, and thrusts her purse at Damian as she inspects herself in the compact mirror. Finally she is done, and Damian hands it over. They are about to enter the Outback when Tony, Bobbie, and Lucas come out the door. Bobbie glares at them; Tony ignores them. Lucy says an embarrassed hello.

Later, we see Lucy standing at the bar with Damian, watching Kevin, who is walking back to his seat next to Felicia's. She continues to watch Kevin as she speaks to Damian.

L: "Just when you think it's safe to go out again at night. I wish we hadn't run into Bobbie and Tony first. It's a sign - I shouldn't be here with you."

D: "You're not here with me. When did this start?"

L: "What?"

D: "Oh, your fascination with Kevin."

L: "Fascination? Are you crazy, I'm not fascinated by anybody."

But she continues to gaze at Kevin. For a moment, Kevin looks up and his eyes lock with hers; then he looks away. Damian has had enough;he starts to walk away from Lucy.

L: "Wait. Where are you going?"

D: "Home. There's not a soul in this place who wouldn't love to see me drawn and quartered. And this strange little mating ritual you're doing with Kevin is a bit much. Good night, Lucy."

L: "So, wait, you're going to leave me standing right here?"

D: "Well, I would be very glad to drop you by your door."

L: (looking over at Kevin) "No, thank you - I'll stay."

D: (also looking in Kevin's direction) "Suit yourself."

Damian makes a show of kissing Lucy on the cheek. As he leaves, Tony, Bobbie, and Lucas walk back into the Outback. Bobbie, seeing Lucy alone at the bar, decides it's a good time to sink her claws into Lucy and do some damage. Lucy tries to apologize, but Bobbie rips away at Lucy until Kevin decides to intervene. He walks up to the women, puts his arm around Lucy, and briskly leads her away from Bobbie, remarking:

K: "I think that's more than enough."

(Kevin takes Lucy, who looks quite shaken up, into his arms and begins to dance with her.)

K: "It's all right, Lucy - I've got you now."

A little later, our heroes are still dancing.

L: "I do feel a lot better now, so you can go ahead and go."

K: "Well, what would you like me to do, Lucy?"

L: "It's not what I'd like you to do - you're going to scold me, aren't you?"

K: "I'm not your father."

L: "No, but you do tend to act like my conscience."

K: "Well then let's try something different, then. Why don't you act as your own conscience and tell me why you feel the need to be scolded."

L: "Because I showed up here with the pariah of this town just..."

K: "Yes?"

L: "Just to get a reaction out of you, which you did not have the courtesy to give me."

(Kevin's smile at this admission lights up his face.)

L: "And because I was stupid enough to believe that Bobbie would accept my apology this time."

K: "You made the effort, and you didn't deserve what you got for it."

L: "Thank you."

K: "And as for manipulating me solely for the sake of a reaction, I used to play that game. I'm not going to anymore - is that clear?"

L: "No, but I'll work on it."

K: "Would you like a drink?"

L: "Yes."

Kevin walks her over to the bar. When we rejoin them, Lucy is getting up off a barstool. Kevin, who was standing in front of the barstool, doesn't move back to give her extra space when she stands up, so they wind up standing very close together. The closeness makes Lucy nervous.

K: "Are you sure you don't want to stay?"

L: "No, but I'd be - thank you for the rescue."

K: "I'll walk you to do the door."

And he does - and that's it!
