Lucy Gives Kevin a Rose In His Office

(We open on two roses: one red, one white. Lucy, bearing a rose for our hero, Kevin. Kevin looks up from his paperwork and offers greeting...) K: "Good morning."

L: "Yes, it is. It is an absolutely beautiful, gorgeous, wonderful morning and this is for you. (Lucy presents Kevin with the white rose.) One truly perfect rose for my one true love."

K: "Ah, this is so... romantic?"

L: "I know, guys always get all funny accepting flowers from women. I think that it throws you off your game."

K: "Actually, I'm flattered. I'm just waiting breathlessly for what might follow."

(Kevin, who used to hide behind his desk, now specifically moves out of that professional space and closer to Lucy.)

L: "What is to follow is an invitation for you to take me away for the weekend."

K: "The weekend?"

L: "Well, or however much time you can spare."

K: "Is there an occasion for this?"

L: "Absolutely, we are celebrating the end to all my troubles. Almost."

(Kevin's smile fades on the "almost.")

K: "Lucy, what do you mean `almost?' I thought you said everything was over and done with?"

L: "Yes, almost over and done with."

K: "Aren't you the one who told me that Joe Scully had been arrested for hijacking? That was you who told me? I wasn't dreaming that, right?"

L: "Yes, yes, and there's more. He was caught with three million dollars worth of drugs, so that means they can put him away for at least a decade."

K: "Wait, wait... drugs?"

L: "Cocaine."

K: "Lucy, don't tell me you were involved with drugs."

L: "Drugs? Oh come on, I have never had anything to do with drugs, nor will I ever."

K: "Oh, Lucy..."

L: "No, Kevin, listen to me, just say you'll take me away for the weekend and I swear to you, I will fill you in on every little, nasty nuance."

K: "You told me you were safe."

L: "I am."

K: "Then why the hurry to leave town?"

L: "Now, wait a minute, Doc, as I remember, we have been trying to get out of town together for months and months and months. Have you forgotten that? I certainly haven't forgotten. Because you are so adorable and irresistible, I can't wait to get you alone someplace where we don't have all these annoying distractions and we could make love together until we beg for mercy. Doesn't that sound like fun?"

K: "A real treat."

(Kevin's trying so hard to remain unmoved, but you can see him melting. He's a goner.)

L: "Look, I have been neglecting you and I want to make up for that."

(Kevin looks her up and down...)

K: "Well, I'd love to let you try. All right, we'll go away, but that means you have to tell me the truth, and I mean, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

L: "So help me, God. Can we go this afternoon?"

K: "Tonight. And let me make the reservations."

L: "Yes, sir. You know something? You are so irresistible and so adorable, you are not going to regret this. I promise."

(Kiss. Lucy starts to leave, but Kevin never lets her get away with anything.)

K: "Oh, Lucy, who's the other rose for?"

L: "My other lover. No, you are the only man in my life. This is for an old friend, for old times' sake. Ciao, Doc."

(Lucy walks out and Kevin looks after her, dimples at full tilt, then it hits him...)

K: "Sigh... I'm doomed."
