Kevin & Lucy & Payback Schemes
Kevin has been having dreams about Ryan,
and Lucy has found out that Damian engineered ELQ's takeover of
Deception. Furious , she runs to Kevin for advice. She
finds him at home, dressed in his denim painting ensemble.
L: "Ooh, I have never been more furious in all my entire life!"
K: "Really?"
L: "How could I let this happen? How could I ignore my instincts like that? You know, I had that horrible, horrible feeling right down in my gut that something was wrong. Did I listen to it? No! Why? I let him - I believed it - I did - I believed it from him. No - he convinced me. He seduced me into it! I cannot believe this - I was right. I'm always right. I am always right - I just need to learn to listen to my instincts."
K: "Yeah, I hate it when that happens."
L: "Damian Smith was behind the ELQ purchase of Deception."
K: (in mock astonishment) "Damian was? Not Ned? Lucy - "
L: "You know what, if this is going to be an 'I told you so,' I swear, I will march my little feet right out that door."
K: "Then what do you want from me?"
L: "Compassion. Maybe a little pity."
K: "First of all, sit down. Sit down. Second of all, unless you think I am entirely without feeling, you have my compassion. Betrayal is very painful. But in this case it's not surprising. It's just a perfect illustration of how Damian operates. Perhaps the only mistake you made was thinking that you were somehow special to him. Well, now you know."
L: "Wait right there. This sounds remarkably like an 'I told you so.'"
K: "Sorry, it just slipped out."
L: "Well, could you let a solution slip out, then? I have been
betrayed and used and made to be a complete fool. You know what this calls for? This calls for a Lucy Coe revenge special."
K: "Lucy..."
L: "I can't figure out what I want to do, though. It's got to be
a doozy. It's got to be a real humdinger. Okay, what does he care about? Himself - that's all he cares about. So I have
to think of something that stops short of me getting the death
penalty, but it has to be painful and totally humiliating. "
K: "May I jump in here?"
L: "Please. Go ahead. All ideas welcome. Go ahead, I want to hear."
K: "As the learned, logical, reasoned thinker in the room with all the matter up there, I was going to suggest that perhaps the best course of action to take with Damian is to sever all connections with him."
(Lucy laughs.)
L: "You're kidding, right? Oh, boy, you are truly delusional! That
would be letting him get away with it. Oh, no, no, no, this is
going to be the payback of my lifetime."
K: "Okay. Let me clarify what it is I'm suggesting. Damian is
an egocentrist."
L: "The worst."
K: "Yes, and there's no more horrific penalty or punishment you can impose on an egocentrist than to ignore him."
L: "No. Absolutely not. I can't just ignore him. That means he
gets away with it, and I want to teach him a lesson."
K: "But you're assuming the man has a moral base. You can't teacha lesson to an amoral person. They just don't get it."
L: "Oh, well, fine, fine, but I just can't take no action at all.
That's not how I handle things."
K: "Well, how do you handle things, Lucy?"
L: "Well, right now, I have no choice. I have to beat him at his
own game."
(Kevin walks over to stand close to Lucy.)
K: "Why don't you let me save you from yourself instead? The
alternative would only cause me endless worry."
L: "And why on earth should you worry about me?"
(Kevin puts his hands on her arms and draws her closer.)
K: "Because when you obsess like this, it interrupts the natural order of things."
(Lucy moves closer.)
L: "Oh. Which is?"
(Kevin moves another step closer to Lucy.)
K: "I don't know. We've only begun to explore the possibilities. All that potential."
(Kisses.)
L: "Wow, we do have some fun, don't we?"
K: "Yes, we sure do."
L: "And you know..." (kisses) "we will have so much more fun, I
promise. But first, I have to take care of Damian. I have to."
(She goes over to pick up Kevin's phone, and begins to dial.)
K: "Think about the risks, Lucy. This is Damian's game - he created it and he made up the rules. He's the grand master of it."
L: "Yeah, well, he can be beaten. Anyone can be beaten."
K: "You're playing into his hands for the umpteenth time."
L: "Well, maybe this time I'll get it right."
Lucy calls Damian and arranges to meet with him while Kevin watches and
listens. She hangs up and looks at Kevin.
L: "Oh, you're not seriously upset with me, are you?"
K: "It's your life, Lucy. But you always try to drag me in whenever it comes back and bites you on the behind. So here's the deal. You go and play your vendetta with Damian, but do not, repeat, do not ask me to bail you out when it blows up in your face again."
L: "Oh, pooh, you're going to be frothing at the mouth wanting a
running commentary as always. And don't worry. Damian is the one who's going to get burned this time, not me."
Lucy kisses Kevin and leaves to go meet with Damian and accept the bet
extension.
