Kevin, Lucy, and Shirts
(Lucy, wearing Kevin's shirt, comes downstairs, looks at Kevin's videotape collection and pops one
of the videocassettes into the VCR. The tape plays. It's Kevin during his twin study session. Lucy watches, as Kevin enters
the room from upstairs. He's wearing his blue bathrobe.)
(On the tape we hear:)
Kevin: "I was four years old and I was cold and I was alone and I was shaking. No matter how hard I tried, I
couldn't stop shaking. It was as if my hands and my arms and my knees and my legs... it was as if
every joint in my body had a mind of its own. But I wasn't about to cry. I wasn't about to make any
sound at all, because I knew that if I did, I knew I'd hear the voice."
(On the tape, the phone rings and Kevin returns from the Twilight Zone. In the Lighthouse, Lucy turns
and realizes Kevin has also been watching the video. Kevin is mesmerized. Lucy starts to apologize...)
L: "I'm so sorry. I thought it was something else, but then, when I saw that it was you on the tape and
you were talking, I just got so involved..."
K: "May I have the remote, please?"
L: "What?"
K: "The remote. I'd like to run it back."
L: "Oh, yeah..."
(Kevin watches the tape, again. He is enthralled, but also, befuddled. Lucy says...)
L: "I feel so sorry for that little boy. What was the voice that you were waiting to hear?"
K:: "I have no idea."
L: "What do you mean? You mean it was like a dream that kept recurring and then it would just stop
before you actually got to where..."
K: "I mean, I have no clue as to what that memory is all about."
L: "Are you saying you don't even remember making that tape?"
K: "Oh, I remember making it, just not that section."
L: "Oh boy. I just watched you watch yourself telling that story and you were very, very disturbed by it."
K: "Yes, of course I was. I just saw myself telling this bizarre tale that I can't remember at all."
L: "Do you have any idea how concerned I am about you? You have been going off on things... Like
Alan, just because he wanted Felicia to sign some papers and me, for just walking into the door that
day. And the court room, when it was so hot and you went off. And what about at the Outback, that
weird rose on the computer?"
(The phone rings)
K: "Hello, yes, she is. It's for you."
L: "Oh, I told the office I'd be here. Excuse me."
K: "Take your time."
(Kevin is clearly grateful for the distraction to Lucy. Lucy is getting news about Jacks Cosmetics. But
Kevin is staring at that videocassette. Lucy hangs up the phone and announces...)
L: "I have just had the most wonderful news. Apparently, those Jacks Fragrance for Men samples that I
gave at the Nurses' Ball, they were a big hit. Everyone is calling in and ordering so many, we can't
even fill them. I'm going to have to step up production just to meet the demand. Isn't it incredible? I'm
just out of the starting gate and I'm already winning the race."
K: "Good for you."
L: "Oh, this is wonderful. Wait a minute, I can't rest on my laurels, though, I've got
to come up with a complimentary fragrance for women while the whole industry is still reeling."
K: "Do you have anything in mind?"
L: "No, not yet. I've had Girard working on concoctions, but he hasn't come up with anything that's
been able to impress me, yet."
K: "Well, you'll come up with something. You always do. You know, I wouldn't be hurt, if you had to
run off to the office, now."
(Kevin really doesn't want Lucy to remember that videotape.)
L: "No, not a chance. We are going to finish our discussion."
K: "All right. How about lilac for the new fragrance?"
L: "No, too common. I want something, I don't know, usual and different."
K: "Seaweed?"
L: "Very funny. All right, what about you? Have you ever had a particular fragrance that turns you on?
What? Tell me."
K: "Well, I've always been haunted by jasmine."
L: "You never mentioned that before."
K: "I just remembered it."
L: "Jasmine. I like that. I'm going to get Girard working on it right away. Thank you."
K: "Don't mention it. Well, you'd better get started."
L: "Oh, I will, just as soon as we've solved the mystery of that tape. Why do you suppose you were so
cold and scared?"
K: "If I can't remember the memory, how can I answer that?"
L: "That's so worrisome, it's almost like you're blocking out certain things for a reason."
(What a lovely dimpled smile, Dr. Collins.)
K: "Has the session started already, Dr. Coe? I just need to know, in case I should lie down on the
couch."
(And what kind of session did you have in mind, Kevin?)
L: "I want to help you."
K: "And I thought we agreed that I wouldn't bore you to death with stories about twin studies."
L: "I never said that I thought those twin studies were boring."
K: "Well, maybe I do."
L: "Yeah, right."
(Kevin gives Lucy this look.)
K: "Did I ever tell you how you look in my shirt?"
L: "No."
K: "Absolutely delicious. And I remember how you looked last night, when you weren't wearing it. I just
can't make up my mind, what I'd like better."
L: "Well, I suppose I could reprise the look and give you a chance to decide."
K: "Now that's a good idea."
(Talk about a killer smile. Kevin should have a warning label for smiles like that.)
(Kevin starts to unbutton the shirt. Kevin and Lucy kiss. Fade to black.)
(When we return, Lucy and Kevin are lying on the sofa. Lucy is snuggled against Kevin's bare chest. Lucy sleeps, but Kevin remembers the
sound of dripping water, a door at the end of a hallway, a light coming out from under the door...
Kevin is perplexed and, it seems, more than a little sad.)
(Later still, Kevin is now dressed in denim and is painting at his easel. He knocks over a can filled with
water and as the water drips to the floor, he appears... haunted...)
