Kevin and Lucy Talk About Living Together For A Second Time

(We begin in Kevin's office. Kevin's reading a report and Lucy bursts in...)

L: "Somebody is out to get me."

K: "That would be me."

L: "No, not like that. I mean, somebody is out to ruin me and my company."

K: "And this apparent attack of paranoia is based on?"

L: "The fact that I cannot seem to get supplies or products delivered without being lost, damaged or stolen. I think Deception is being hijacked."

K: "I see. Well, if interstate traffic is an issue, then you need to call the FBI."

L: "The FBI? Oh Kevin, do you realize what Edward Quartermaine would do, if he thought one of his subsidiaries was being investigated by the FBI? He would probably fire me."

K: "Exactly. And what would Edward's reaction be if Deception fell apart and his president did nothing about it?"

L:"Oh, see, I am not planning to do nothing. I am going to use the connections I have to get a line on exactly what is going on."

K: "Lucy..."

L: "Kevin, don't. Right now all I need from you is emotional support."

K: "Specifically?"

L: "A hug?"

K: "I can manage that."

(And he does!)

(On the way to the elevators, Lucy is in full rant about broken musk oil vials...)

L: "... How could he not notice the whole thing smelled like a brothel?" "We'll figure it out. Don't worry."

(Now if only Kevin could figure out *why* Amy winked at him. That confused look on his face was priceless...)

(At the lighthouse, Kevin is pouring some white wine. Lucy's still relating the sad tale of Deception disasters. This time, it's a stolen truck.)

L: "... So now, I can just picture some vendor in Manhattan having my very expensive, adorable little crystal vials of perfume and selling them to the streets of Manhattan for peanuts. However, they are not going to get away with this."

K: "Why do you sound so confident about that?"

L: "Because Luke is looking into it for me."

K: "I suggest the FBI and you go to Luke Spencer?"

L: "Well, yes, I did. It was a good decision because Luke does have two things the FBI lacks: speed and discretion."

K: "Oh, yes and constitutional rights be damned."

L: "Rights? Wait a minute, what about my rights? What about all the rights of all those poor people that want to buy my perfume?"

K: "When you say poor, I hope you're not referring to their bank book because poor people can't afford your perfume, Lucy. Unless, of course, they buy if from the guy with the table on the sidewalk."

L: "You don't have to be mean. I want you to listen. I figured this out. I know who is behind this whole mess: Damian. And that's why I need Luke, because Luke is the very person to handle him."

(At the mention of Damian's name, Kevin looks like he just stepped in something...)

K: "Damian?"

L: "Yes. Who else hates me so much? At least, lately..."

K: "Damian. I have a problem with that theory, you see, you're the one who told me that Damian was so hell-bent on avoiding any kind of connection with his father's kind of business. Well, excuse me, but diversion of interstate trucking and theft of entire deliveries just seems contradictory."

L: "I don't care about that. I don't care at all. I just know this by instinct. It's an instinctual thing with me. Do you know something? I have never noticed that before."

K: "What?"

L: "You get these amazingly sexy little green flecks in your eyes whenever the word `Damian' is mentioned. Could you be jealous?"

K: "Of course not. And you're changing the subject. Oh... maybe a little..."

(As Lucy grabs his lapels...)

L: "How refreshing."

K: "To you, maybe, I hate it."

(Kiss...)

(And they're still kissing when Lucy queries...)

L: "May I ask you something?"

K: "Always."

L: "You remember how once-upon-a-time that you asked me, well, you just suggested, that maybe we should live together?"

K: "Yes, I did."

L: "Yes, you did. But then, you never mentioned it again, which leads me to think that maybe I just sort of imagined it or maybe I dreamed it or something."

K: "Oh no, you didn't dream it. I did broach the subject."

L: "Oh, so now you've changed your mind, right?"

K: "No, not at all. I was waiting for you to tell me what you thought about it. You know me, Lucy, I'm not one to push."

L: "Well, I've done that. I have thought about it... a lot."

K: "And?"

L: "It terrifies me. I always thought that if you lived with someone then they could see your flaws more clearly. And, well, naturally, with me, if someone saw my flaws they'd run screaming away, never to return. I just guess I always believe in that saying that familiarity breeds contempt."

K: "Well, you know, I believe that familiarity breeds intimacy, but then, maybe that's what you're terrified of."

L: "Oh... how do we overcome that one, Doc?"

K: "Well, personally, for me, I'm fine with taking it slowly. I mean, we can divulge our flaws to each other one at a time and that way, they're not so overwhelming."

L: "You, flawed?"

K: "I know it's a difficult concept to wrap your mind around, isn't it?"

L: "Hmmm... hmmm... because all this time, you've lead me to believe you're absolute perfection."

(Kiss)

(And they're still kissing, when Lucy asks...)

L: "Mmmm... So what you're saying here is that we should actually consider living together?"

K: "Didn't I just say that?"

(Kevin nibbles her neck.)

L: "Yes, you did, but do you really want to do that, really?"

K: "What's not to want?"

(I think Kevin's smile has to do with the neck-nibbling...)

L: "Well, you do sort of twitch and get really nervous when I step even one foot into your kitchen."

K: "Oh, yes, but I am remarkably adaptable. I could learn to share my cappuccino machine, as long as you promise to read the owner's manual."

L: "I could do that... I could..."

K: "Hmmm... hmmm... what else?"

L: "Trust. See, there's that trust issue. You know, if we were to live together, then you'd have to give me your keys. So, would you be comfortable, you know, handing over a set of your keys to me?"

K: "Lucy, after everything I've entrusted to you already, keys are the least of it."

L: "Really?"

K: "Really, Lucy. You've seen me at my most vulnerable. You stayed beside me. You gave me the room that I needed. You supported me through the most painful, and liberating, revelations of my life. You've earned my trust and my love."

L: "It's just hard to picture you vulnerable, Doc."

K: "Oh, I can be, if you let me. Since I'm starting my life all over again, I can't think of anyone I'd rather do it with than you."

(Lucy's near tears, Kevin's near tears and I'm sure many a viewer is near tears, as Lucy caresses Kevin's face...)

(Later, at dinner...)

L: "Rochester? When?"

K: "Tomorrow. I'm giving a lecture there."

L: "What kind of lecture?"

K: "It's on Anger, Impulse and Inhibition."

L: "Mmmm... people actually pay to come?"

K: "Yes, a nominal fee."

L: "Hmmm... what does it mean?"

K: "You're not really interested."

L: "Oh yes, I am. Oh Doc, I figure, you know, if I'm going to have an intellectual as my lover than I better be up on this stuff. So it's, anger, something and something."

K: "Anger, Impulse and Inhibition. It's basically an evaluation of two opposing responses to anger. One being the unpremeditated, spontaneous reaction and the other being the repressed, controlled one."

L: "Hmmm... and which would you say was better?"

K: "Well, it's not a question of what's better or worse. You see, the impulsive reaction, though giving the subject an immediate release... (Lucy begins to make love to Kevin's hand), can often cause pain to objects or people because it's expressed without censors or caution."

L: "Mmmm... go on..."

K: "On the other hand, the inhibited response, more controlled, less harmful to others.. (Lucy stands, takes off Kevin's jacket and kisses his neck and face) less likely to feel regret afterwards, by the nature of its repression, is likely to cause stress in the subject, which will often manifest in the form of ulcers or heart problems or any other number of physical ailments."

(Lucy loosens Kevin's tie and unbuttons his shirt. The look on Kevin's face is beatific.)

L: "Mmmm.... I only know one that I want with us..."

(At least, that's what I think she said, she was busy kissing Kevin at the time!)

K: "You haven't heard a word I've said."

L: "Oh, absolutely, it's just like sex."

K: "Anger is just like sex?"

L: "You're right, you caught me, I'm really not that interested."

(From that smile of Kevin's, as he takes Lucy into his arms, I'd say he doesnt mind the least)

(The last act is without dialogue, but begins with Kevin carrying Lucy to the sofa and ends with Kevin and Lucy on the floor, in front of a roaring fire... The middle part you can just imagine for yourself... ;-)
