Kevin, Lucy and Valentine's Day
On to the Outback...
Kevin: You know, if I had to lay odds on which one of us four would be without a date on Valentine's Day, I would not have put my money on Mac.
Sean: And I would have picked you for a table for one.
Kevin: Well, thank you very much.
(Lucy walks in, carrying a package...)
Miguel: Lucy came to save you from a fate worse than death.
(There are cat calls, etc. from the men, esp. Sean, as Kevin escorts Lucy to a table.)
Lucy: I don't think I want to know what that was all about.
Kevin: They're just jealous, honey.
Mac: Well, someone has to take care of you lovebirds. At least I got a Valentine from Maxie.
(Kevin and Lucy sit and Lucy, unable to contain her excitement, hands the package, wrapped in red, to Kevin.)
K: "Well, are you sure it's all right that I open this in public?"
L: "It doesn't require batteries."
K: "Well, neither do we."
(That was funny, Kevin. But we never thought you did... ;-)
(Kevin opens the package and takes one a leather-bound book. He is amazed and delighted.)
K: "This is beautiful... "The Interpretation of Dreams" by Sigmund Freud. Lucy... this is a first edition and it's signed by Dr. Freud. And it's signed to..."
L: "Yes, see, there's this little rare book dealer and he's near the University and you have to have an appointment to see him, but I went to him and he told me that you would know who Alfred Adler was."
K: "Of course, I do. Lucy... I'm overwhelmed."
L: "How overwhelmed?"
(Kevin and Lucy don't need to say another word. Kevin gives her one of those five-alarm looks and holds out his hand. Lucy stands and Kevin pulls her onto his lap. Kiss...)
(When we return, Lucy is back in her seat, watching Kevin, as he lovingly strokes the pages of the book...)
L: "I've never seen anybody look at a book quite that way."
K: "What way?"
L: "With such open, naked adoration."
K: "Well, this isn't just any old book, you know."
L: "Mmmm... I suppose you have read it before, huh?"
K: "Oh, half a dozen times."
L: "Well, you could exchange it, if you want."
K: "Fat chance."
L: "Well, if you keep on caressing those pages like that, I may regret that I gave that gift to you."
K: "I'm sublimating."
L: "Oh... well... in that case..."
(Kevin raises Lucy's hand to his lips and kisses it. We hear a champagne cork "pop" as the Donnellys celebrate.)
K: "Seems like the world is full of happy people tonight."
L: "Yeah, well, I don't think even Tiffany is happier than I am right now."
K: "And you haven't even seen your Valentine's gift."
L: "I can hardly wait."
K: "You won't have to, I checked it with my coat."
L: "You checked it? It's that big?"
K: "It's very big."
L: "When do I get it?"
K: "Right now."
(Are they still talking about the Valentine present? ;-)
(Kevin goes to get the gift and eventually returns carrying a large box.)
L: "Kevin, this is huge."
K: "Yes, and it's heavy, too."
L: "Wait a minute, are those air holes in there? Is something alive?"
(We hear quacking and Lucy wonders...)
L: "What was that?"
K: "I think that was a `yes.'"
(Kevin unveils... the Duck!)
L: "Oh no, oh no, is this my Thanksgiving duck?"
K: "Yes, it is."
L: "Oh my gosh, what is this he's wearing around his neck?"
K: "Oh, this is just a little something he picked up on his travels."
(Kevin takes the necklace, a diamond heart, off the duck and puts it on Lucy. It's Lucy's turn to be overwhelmed.)
L: "Those are diamonds, aren't they? Those... It's a diamond... it's diamonds... Wait a minute, those are really diamonds... Ohhh... I love it."
K: "The heart or the duck?"
L: "Oh, both... both... Is this really my duck?"
K: "This is absolutely your duck."
L: "Oh and he's home. He's home from his little vacation on the pond."
K: "Absolutely. Ready to be domesticated. I put a small duck cage, about the size of an apartment, along with some duck food, up at your place. And if he chooses to come along with you, if and when you come to the lighthouse, I'll build him a personalized duck pond, so he can cavort and amuse himself in it."
L: "I love you, duck. I've missed you, duck. Wait a minute, I just can't call him duck. I mean, what a silly thing, he's got to have a name. But what do you name a duck? I mean, what do you call ducks really... I know..."
K: "No... not Kevin."
L: "No, not Kevin, I only have room for one Kevin in my life. Kevin, I want you to meet Sigmund. Sigmund, I want you to meet my Kevin."
K: "Be with you in a minute, Sigmund."
(Kevin's got better things to do at the moment, like kiss Lucy...)
(When we return, Mac proposes a toast to Sean and Tiffany, Kevin, holding Sigmund, stands and cheers...)
K: "Here, here."
Mac replies, "Thank you, Dr. Collins. And if that's a duck, don't tell the health inspectors. Yeah, well, takes all kinds..."
(The look on Kevin's face was priceless. Later still, Kevin and Lucy are sitting at the table, staring into each other's eyes. Lucy reveals...)
L: "This is the best Valentine's Day I've ever had."
K: "Me, too. What do you think, Sigmund?"
(Kevin stands and kisses Lucy. Later, alas, Miguel sings the song that will not die, *however* it was worth it, because we got the chance to see one of Kevin's megawatt smiles.)
Happy Valentine's Day!
