Kevin, Lucy, and A Working Lunch
(Kevin and Lucy are enjoying lunch al fresco.
Kevin is taking notes
and he's wearing headphones, listening to a
tape. Lucy is munching a
carrot. She looks distracted. Kevin queries...)
K: "You're not going to sulk are you?"
L: "What?"
K: "I told you that I could come out for lunch on
the condition that I
could review my notes because I have to
interview more twins this
afternoon. And you said that my physical
presence alone would
suffice. So why do you look like that?"
L: "How do I look?"
K: "Troubled."
L: "Troubled? I'm not troubled. Nope. I'm
maybe a little bit
concerned, but, oh, it doesn't have anything to
do with you. Not
really, directly."
K: "OK. Spill."
L: "OK, I, ah, I made a major business decision
and I would simply like
your input."
K: "You've made the decision? So why would you
need to know what I
think?"
L: "Perhaps, perhaps, I am just a little bit afraid
that you might be
mad."
K: "I'm listening."
(And he does, as Lucy launches into a full rant
about her business
deal with Jax. Kevin finally manages to get in a
word...)
K: "Congratulations."
(And he puts on his headphones and goes back
to work. Lucy studies
him and finally can't take it anymore. She
moves the headphones...)
L: "Congratulations? That's it? Congratulations?
That's all you're
going to say?"
K: "Well, I thought that covered it. You have a
done deal. Isn't it the
deal you wanted?"
L: "No, no, not at all, actually, it's much, much
better."
K: "Then I congratulate you on that."
L: "You're mad."
K: "No. Excuse me."
(And he puts those headphones back on.)
L: "Wait."
(He takes off the headphones.)
K: "You know, Lucy, these aren't an indication that
I'm hard of hearing."
L: "See, you are mad at me. And it's OK. I can
understand if you're
going to be mad at me because I did make a
major professional decision
without considering you."
K: "Why should you? You are, as you continually
remind me, a brilliant
businesswoman. It's likely that you would make
a smart decision,
isn't it?"
L: "Well, yeah, of course."
K: "Then, what's the problem?"
L: "No problem, as long as you are not mad."
K: "I'm not."
L: "Good."
(Kevin's back to work, his headphones on,
taking notes. Lucy moves
the headphones, again.)
L: "Well, then how come we're not celebrating,
you know?"
K: "Because I have work to do."
L: "Oh right, oh please, we all have our priorities."
(Kevin's back to his headphones and notes.
Lucy scoots her chair over
to Kevin's side. She caresses his hand, his arm,
she nibbles his
neck. He takes off the headphones and asks...)
K: "Are you trying to make me mad?"
L: "Maybe. You're awfully fun lately when you're
mad. OK, so some
people really do have their priorities. Work."
(Lucy scoots back over to the other side of the
table. But now she
has Kevin's full attention. He deliberately turns
off the tape
recorder and removes the headphones, then
scoots his chair over to
Lucy's side. She's feigning indifference, her
head stuck in an issue
of "Siren." Kevin tries charm...)
K: "I suppose it could wait."
L: "Huh?"
K: "My work, it can wait."
L: "I'm sorry, I'm extremely busy, here."
K: "Now you really are making me mad."
(Lucy's trying to hide her smile from Kevin.)
L: "So, whatcha going to do about it?"
(Kevin takes the magazine out of Lucy's hand
and puts it on the table.
He then grabs Lucy's lapels and pulls her to him
for one serious kiss.
They break apart, smiling. Then back to kissing
and out...)
