Selection of Mrs. Emmye Boone Jacobsen, 4711 18th NE as University District Mother of the Year was announced at the Tuesday luncheon meeting of University District Chamber of Commerce. Her name will go onto a plaque provided annually by the University District Herald.
The nomination was made by her daughter, Mrs. John L. Ross, and seconded by another daughter, Mrs. Arlo K. (Barbara) Myers, Riverside, Calif., and two sons, Andrew of Phoenix, Ariz., and Roger of Kirkland.
Also endorsing the nomination were sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, 11 of her 14 grandchildren, and 10 students who had lived in Mrs. Jacobsen's home while attending the University of Washington, three of them from foreign countries.
A NATIVE of Texas and a descendant of Daniel Boone, Mrs. Jacobsen was the eldest girl in a family of eight children. She taught school 10 years before marrying and coming to the Puget Sound area. The family had a dairy farm near Sedro Woolley. There Mr. Jacobsen died of tuberculosis and soon afterward the family lost its home by fire and its farm by foreclosure.
Widowed, Mrs. Jacobsen came to University District and not only put her four children through the University but has been a source of inspiration to them, to her grandchildren, the student guests in her home, and to the people of University Baptist Church, of which she is a member.
AT THE CHAMBER program at the Student Union Building Mother of the Year Chairman Val Bain presented Mrs. Jacobsen with gifts and gift certificates from Dollie McAssey, Betty Manning, Pay 'n' Save, Her Yankee Peddler, J. C. Penney Co., Lerner Shops, J. K. Gill, Lowman and Hanford, Artcraft Studio, Moderne Beauty School, Christensen's Shoes, Walters Studio, Knitting Needle, R. Z.
