On December 3, 1941, Admiral Charles H. McMorris said, "Pearl Harbor will never be attacked from the air"!!!

On first seeing the ruins of the Colosseum as the allies entered Rome, an unidentified GI was heard to say "Gee, I didn't know our bombers had done that much damage in Rome"

On June 4, 1942, Admiral Chuichi Nagumo said "it is assumed that there are no enemy carriers in waters adjacent to Midway" Just a few hours later 4 of his carriers had been sunk by planes from this 'non-existant' carrier force!

In a conversation with U.S. President Truman just before August 8,1945, Admiral William Leahy remarked of the atom bomb project, "That is the biggest fool thing we've ever done. The bomb will never go off."

When confronted with the British quip "You Yanks are overpaid, oversexed and over here" The American reply was "and you Limeys are underpaid, undersexed and under Eisenhower".


On November 10, 1933, Adolf Hitler said, "I am insulted by the persistent assertion that I want a war. Am I a fool? war! It would settle nothing"

After attacking Greece, Benito Mussolini said " I shall send in my resignation as an Italian if anyone objects to our fighting the Greeks" A while later the Italian army was badly mauled by the British Army, who certainly 'objected'.

After the Japanese surrendered in August, 1945, Admiral William 'Bull' Halsey Jr., told his men, "Cease firing, but if any enemy planes appear, shoot 'em down in a friendly fashion"

"You can't even shoot straight" yelled the Romanian dictator, Ion Antonescu (who hated the Russians with a passion) after two attempts to execute him by a Russian firing squad. A Soviet officer had to administer the coup de grace.
