The Heirarchy Of The Demigod Race
(from Lina Garg's world)

"Oh, so ya wanna know where I get my powers from? And probably why I could use them in Lina Inverse's world, too, right? Okay, here goes... First, I could use my powers in Lina I's world because just like Chanderon could get to that world, he also became a sort of vessel for the Powers That Be where we're from. And because I went there, too, I became a vessel and even more power could be let in, because there was two of us. Like if Lina Inverse were to ever come to my world, she would become a vessel that would allow her magic's use as she links her world to mine. See?"

"As for where I get my powers from, see the map below. It's a visual depiction of how those of my world understand the heirarchy of demigods to be set up. Pretty simple but ya better not get it wrong. Where I come from, it's not a good idea to get any of those guys angry."

Um... Not done yet. Gomen!

"First of all, there are eight existing demigods: Halca, Domaltiad, Fiurrey, Noran, Titan, Shar Bade, Helia, and Coas. Halca deals mainly with what would be called white magic. Mainly healings and exorcising. Passive magic. Domaltiad controls spells of the sea and water. Fiurrey... well, we'll get to Fiurrey in a sec. That one is sort of the top elemental controller.. Eh.. I'll exlplain later. Noran can be called upon to enhance certain spells. Spells derived from him are always a bit odd... Titan is the granter of the wind's power. Shar Bade is sometimes earth and sometimes fire. Helia, wind and/or fire. They don't like each other much. And then there's Coas. Oldest in existance, yet he chooses neither to participate nor judge nor experience anything. We spell casters all kinda figure he got bored with mortals long ago and just doesn't care anymore. Not the best thing from the most powerful of the group, but it could be worse. He could hate my guts!"

"Halca was once a mortal like the rest of us but when Mreaan, the original peacekeeper of the group, was fatally wounded in an attempt to protect Shar Bade from Helia in the War of the Great Firewind, she made Halca a demigod in her place. So now Halca resides within that realm of ancients and can be called upon for casting powerful healing spells. She's supposed to be the easiest to get along with but I've never met her. Never even seen her before and I've cast AURORA WAVE plenty of times."

"Domaltiad is really picky, seldom talks to the others, and would never make an appearance in front of a mortal. He's a lot like the crabs in the seas where he lives, in appearance and mentality: crabby! And probably dangerous. Don't you dare get a spell wrong under him. He's always listening...Despite this, spells like SEA BLAST aren't difficult to use."

"Fiurrey is... um.. Well, it's crazy. So crazy, it lives in it's own little world surrounded by itself deep in the thick forest of N'cha under the earch in the toughest rock. Some say that Fiurrey has a head of flames and a body of roots like a tree. Others, that it has four legs and two heads and can breath fire. Well, maybe it's both. Chanderon claimed to have seen Fiurrey once, before he became evil and tried to destroy my hometown, AND me. He said that Fiurrey did have flames of hair and four legs and ears like any gargoyle and that just for seeing it, Fiurrey tried to kill him. Chanderon barely escaped. But Fiurrey really is insane. Don't know why but that's what I've always been told. Fiurrey has multiple personalities and can split itself into parts, can change its shape, etc. etc. It is the wildness of the world all in one body. Eh. No wonder it's crazy. Drawing power from such a powerful elemental entity needs control, so most apprenticing spellcasters are forbidden to use spells calling on Fiurrey. Er... I was sort of an exception. Hey, I didn't get killed! But I sure surprised my mentor! *grins*"

"Noran. He's another quiet one, they say. Sort of a peacekeeper in his own way but willing to fight, so his power comes from his will. He has no specific realm. A wanderer by spirit, Noran could actually be any strange traveller you meet, so you better treat 'em all good. You never know what Noran'll do. Just watch, make you a slave, or worse. Most people think Noran controls fortune and fate. I think you make your own but it wouldn't hurt to have his power on your side. Nobody seems to have any idea about his origin. Not even if he's part of one of the other higher demigods or not."

"Shar Bade is pretty powerful, although she's not one of the top demigods. She's got an awesome temper and deals a lot with earth and fire. She resides as far away from Helia as she can get-- the center of the earth-- but a few have claimed to have seen her *grins*. You don't need a ton of control to work Shar Bade spells but screwing it up would definitely get her attention. Shar Bade is supposedly a result of something Fiurrey once tried to do. Sketchy details in this area. Nobody seems to know beyond this but it would explain that unrelenting temper."

"Helia's nearly at the top of the chain. She deals mainly with fire but some air, because she lives inside the sun. Like I said, as far away from Shar Bade as possible. The only problem with casting spells that involve either Helia or Shar Bade is that whichever you use most, the other might decide to attack you for seemingly no reason. Her reason would be that, as far as these two demigods are concerned, the most powerful one has the most mortals calling on them. If you don't use them equally, they tend to attack in any way-- generally quite imaginative, too-- and you'll definitely regret it. So, all gray magic spells use an equal amount of Shar Bade and Helia, letting them fight themselves and leave us OUT of it."

"Titan. Definitely the biggest of them all. He's got a temper but nothing like Helia and Shar Bade. Second-oldest, only HE really remembers Coas ever stirring at an insult, a summons, or an attack. I mean, ya can't really hurt Coas, but none of the others would ever stand for insults. Titan especially. He's the quiet, vengeful type. And sometimes, he might just stir up the wind against you for no apparent reason. But there's gotta be one. Titan always thinks before he acts. And Titan has been seen before. Probably the most-often-seen of all the higher demigods. He's huge -- like ten buildings tall! -- and his wings are clear like glass. He has six, instead of two. Coal black eyes and horns and spikes all over him. He's the color of the sky. His place is in the wind, enabling Titan to be everywhere at once. But this is easy for demigods, who can exist in two planes at once."

"Lastly is Coas. All-knowning and never-telling is his reputation among the others. With us mortals, we'd like to know, too, why he just sits in between planes of existance. And what he does all the time. The other demigods don't think he does anything but it could actually be that Coas is the controller of all things. He could be the one holding together the entire world! Ah, but that's just my opinion. Nobody really knows anything about Coas except he's the most powerful, he doesn't care whether anything lives or dies (including himself), and he won't start or settle any arguments amongst the other demigods. Has anyone SEEN Coas? Uh.... Not to my knowledge. Wouldn't even know if I had! He exists between planes, and he could probably divide himself into parts if he wanted to stay there but be totally in one or the other... In fact,... The reason why Chanderon couldn't use the GRYPHON FLARE is because it's a spell I created. It draws power directly from Coas. However, I made a deal with Coas through my mentor. I said that if I could create a spell only I'd be allowed to use, then I'd give my mentor a year of devoted service. I made out like a bandit, 'cause the rites worked and I got my GRYPHON FLARE, and then Chanderon turned evil and I got to kill him before ever returning my service. Ha! So what if it comes back to haunt me. But I can't help thinking... How DID Chanderon make a deal with Coas? And WHY did he turn evil? Um.. Maybe I shouldn't think on it too much, huh? Like if Dark Overlord Chanderon was actually a part of... Oh boy....."

**********************************************

"That heirarchy entails all that the people of my world has come to understand in the use of magic. We figured out how to tap into that power source long ago. They can't stop us from drawing on their power so they don't try. We also know some about the War of the Great Firewind, between Shar Bade and Helia. It started with insults. Helia didn't like the new upstart so she wanted to push her around a bit. But that firey personality of hers wouldn't let Shar Bade drop it. Oh, there are still places in the world where marks of destruction from that battle so long ago tore up the place! The Golem Crater, the Infinite Ice Pond, and the Guardian Hole which leads directly to the demigod's plane of existance, to name a few. It only lasted a few hundred years before Mreaan put an end to it. Pretty sloppy sacrificing herself to do so but that's a pacifist for ya. Coas was long since apathetic by then so he ignored the whole thing. Noran, liking to play with mortal affairs and not demigod scuffs, didn't do much. In fact, Mreaan was the only one to do anything. Domaltiad just complained and made the seas rage to show it. Bad times for fishing. Er.. Actually, one of them did react to the damage. Fiurrey. It didn't like all its pretty land being torn up by the fight so it created huge barriers and always tried to kick Helia and Shar Bade well away from them. Fiurrey is the main reason why mortals survived the battle."

"So how does the magic system work here? You train under a sorcerer or sorceress already granted power from years of experience and they train you on how to use magic and respect where it comes from. Oh, they don't care if power is abused, but if the demigods ever found out you were casting wrong or mixing up their geneology or heirarchy, I'm sure they'd come after you."

"After you learn the spells, you can create your own by understanding the basics. It takes a lot of work to make your own spells, because you sort of hafta convince the demigods that it's just a measly little spell drawing power from one, or all, of them and sorta... ask permission. It's a rites thing. *shrugs* And that's basically where my magic comes from!"
