Let's take a look, shall we?
This is a typical Nyan Nyan from the OVA series of Fushigi Yugi.

APPEARANCE: Nyan Nyans appear to be little girls but they are quite a bit more. Dark cyan/teal hair in neat little buns with the coolest looking braids. About 3'9" or so, seven or eight years old. Depending on whether they are in the series or from the OVAs, they have two different outfits and a slightly different appearance. Many-layered pink dress with long sleeves in the series and the truncated top with more white and less pink for the OVAs, with 'frills' and the cool bows that Ms. Watase loves to draw accenting the outfit. They also look more chibi in the series, but that might be because they had a smaller part.
ABILITIES: They never seem to age. They can float/fly, heal, shoot energy blasts (assumed to be a form of life force blasts), can appear from seemingly nowhere, and can be used as host bodies so that spirits can inhabit them and become both tangible and visible. So don't be fooled by their sweet little voices, child speak, or vane attempts to heal the quirks out of people. A Nyan Nyan can be quite a handy allie.
MENTALITY: They act every bit like sweet little girls, even in the most serious or heart-wrenching situations. So, I guess they are kids in this way.
PURPOSE:Authorically speaking, Nyan Nyans are comedy relief and extra back-up plus another excuse to have more chibis appear in Fushigi Yugi. Within the show, they are very helpful, if a little annoying. They assist Taiitsu-kun ( controller of too many things to list ). Which is a huge job, as Taiitsu-kun is watching over the entire world.
