Lincoln Boat Club History Page

Lincoln Boat Club This is a brief history of the Lincoln Boat Club with contributions having
been made by many members, past and present.
Lincoln Boat Club

The public and inaugural meeting was held in February 1958.

Mr Eccleshare spoke of the desire to have a Boat Club based on the Brayford Pool. He outlined the advantages to Boat owners and the city. He also put forward a resolution that a Lincoln Boat Club be formed with its headquarters on Brayford. This was carried unanimously.

Mr Eccleshare was elected Chairman of a steering committee of 8 in order to launch the club. Subscriptions were set at 10/- per member plus 5/- per boat with persons under 18 paying 5/-. The Sea Cadet Corps were made Honorary members.

At the first AGM, held in March 1958, the name Lincoln Boat Club was chosen.

Thanks to the Sea Cadets, we acquired the present Clubhouse in 1960 and, over the years, have improved the Clubhouse to its present standard. We have also built, and maintain, our own private moorings for 23 boats on the South side of the pool in front of the new University.

The Lincoln Boat Club today have a Club night every Friday evening where everyone is welcome. We have a family membership of approximately 50.

We are very active during the summer months, starting with our Annual Easter Cruise (sometimes very cold). This normally includes some tidal Trent cruising which benefits all and especially newcomers.

Bank Holiday Weekends find us on the river having a get together, usually a barbecue.

June brings one of the highlights of the year when we organise a trip on the river for the patients of St Barnabas Hospice and tea in the Clubhouse afterwards. They look forward to this year after year.

October brings our Annual Rally where we compete against each other for trophies in Boat Handling, Rope Throwing and, of course, the Best Kept Boat.

Winter brings our Social Committee to the forefront with all sorts of Social events being arranged. In the past we have had a Medieval Night - an oriental evening and a Pirate and Shipwreck Night to name a few, with most members dressing up for the part.

At least once a year during our social calendar we have a charity night where we raise money for a good cause including, in the past, the Mayor's Charity or the Hospice.

Recently, we have been invited to put on an illuminated boat parade to coincide with the switching on of the City's Christmas Lights. We have supported this with much pride.

December brings the Christmas Party, complete with a very suspicious looking Santa Claus, Boxing Day and New Year's Day cruises, sometimes breaking the ice on the river as we cruise towards Saxilby.

Finally our Annual Dinner Dance which is attended by members from other boat clubs from around the area, and some of our awards are presented to Lincoln Boat Club Members. This event is also supported by members from neighbouring boat clubs.
