Purposes

By presenting the structure and the use of relative clauses, I planned to help students master the use of relative pronouns and adverbs and how to use contextual information to decide which one to choose and what their meanings are. In addition to introducing the grammatical items, the use of them are also introduced and practiced through a series of activities, mostly designed by using Hot Potatoes software.

Through the texts which have history and famous people as their topic, vocabulary words are also presented in word families and in the context. Following-up activities will help students get their meaning from context and to learn related words in word families and by using word formation information, such as the prefixes and suffixes.

The ultimate goal is to facilitate the process for students to move from the recognition and identification of the grammatical items and vocabulary items in question to the production of them.

Methods

The method I will follow is a quite traditional one, that is, presentation, recognition and practice on the use of the grammatical and vocabulary items in context.

The above-mentioned process will be designed to supply students with both the form and meaning and the use of relative clauses.

Examples and exercises will be presented for students to better understand the use of relative clauses in context. The presentation of the activities follow the acquisition process of the students, from easy recognition tasks such as multiple-choice, matching to more complicated ones such as sentence correction, sentence completion, sentence creation, short answer questions and finally to composition.

The activity types on Hot Potatoes will be adopted as much as possible in the design of the activities.

The result of the materials design will be published on geocities and follow-up feedbacks will be collected for future revisions, which can better meet the needs of the students.

Hot Potatoes Issues

Multiple choice, matching, cloze, fill-in-blank and other activity types will be utilized.

Instructional material will be added using the "readings" and also the feedback system.

Activities #1-5

Explanations of relative clauses will be presented with examples and their meanings, such as what relative pronouns and adverbs to choose depending on the context.

Both single sentences and reading passages will be provided.

Multiple-choice and matching exercises will be provided at this stage as they require only recognition and identification of the grammatical forms and vocabulary, which is comparatively easier than the following tasks.

Activities #6-10

Sentence reordering/scrambled sentences, cloze and some exercises which need more efforts to complete will be supplied at this stage. I would like to include sentence correction and sentence creation in this part, but I do not know whether I can achieve that by using Hot Potatoes. About vocabulary, students will be required to spell the words rather than simply recognizing them.

More difficult words and advanced vocabulary activities will be provided at this stage.

This stage is a step forward compared with the previous multiple-choice exercises

Activities #11-15

After recognition and other previous practice, questions-and-answers exercises will be put at the last stage, where students will need more work to make the tasks done.

About the vocabulary exercise, I would like students to write composition with the grammatical structure and vocabulary learned. But I am not sure how to present that via Hot Potatoes.
