The First Interview... with
Piccolo!
I wake up at 6am, too anxious to sleep. I knew that I did not have
to leave for another four hours, but I couldn’t help it! I needed the time to prepare, to get
myself together! It was, after all, my first interview... and with my favorite DBZ
character!! The cute, gruff green guy, Piccolo!!!
I rummage through my closet, until I finally decide on my newly acquired
‘interviewer outfit’, a white t-shirt, blue skirt, and my black boots (hey, wait a minute,
this is what I always wear!!). I rush to the bathroom, rudely cutting my sister off, and fix
my hair and makeup. I MUST look good for this interview!!! It could either make or
break me!! (not to mention kill me, if I make the guy mad)
After a LONG talk with my mother about where I was going (well, not exactly, but
hey, do you really expect a 17 year old to tell her mom she’s off to interview some alien
guy?) finally, I’m outta the house and on my way.
~ * * ~
I reach the park he told me to be at, and look around. A lot of trees and grass... and
elderly people meditating!! Hmm... well, I suppose he’d kinda fit in?? I begin to walk
down the path, searching for the green man, hoping that he would show up. I couldn’t be
entirely sure that he would, after, *ahem* a little problem in convincing him to come to
the interview. For some strange reason, Piccolo didn’t exactly want to let me interview
him... and it took a little bit of, um, negotiating to get him to come (okay, so I had to give
up this month’s allowance, big deal!).
I arrive at a large open area with a stone bench and fountain. Sitting down, I pull
out my note pad and mini recorder. I glance at my watch, and just as I do, I feel a gust of
air whoosh by over head. Looking up, I feel myself smile as I see the white cape and
green skin of the man, er, alien, hovering above me. He decided to show up after all!!
“You the interviewer?” he asks (ooh!!! I luv that deep voice!)
Swallowing, I nod nervously. “Y-yes, I am. My name is Lini Syani, I’m the one
you talked to on the phone. I must say, I’m a big fan of yours!!”
Seeming pleased by my last comment, he drops from the sky and lands on the bench
beside me. Leaning back casually, the green Namek looks me up and down. “I see,” he
says, as if not taking me seriously. He is on edge, and almost seems as if he is expecting
tiny little me to try and attack him!! Must have been in one too many fights, I decide.
“So why did you want to interview me?” he asks finally.
Blushing, I reach for my recorder and turn it on. “Well, you see, um, Mr. Pic-”
“It’s just Piccolo,” he says suddenly, somewhat harshly.
“Uh, ok, Piccolo, I am planning interviews with the cast of DBZ in order to give the
fans a bit more knowledge of what you are really like. Since you are my favorite
character off the show, I chose to interview you first.” There, that wasn’t so hard, if I’d
remember to breathe, I’d do okay!!
Smiling, and showing his fangs, Piccolo seems pleased. “Well, nice to meet
someone who isn’t trying to kill me, for a change. So what do you want to know?”
“Well, I’m sure that the question on most fans’ minds would be about you and
Gohan. How would you describe your relationship with him?” I shrink against the bench
as I see his eyes narrow.
“What do you mean?” he grumbles.
Feeling myself shake (why did I have to be such a coward??), I stammer, “I-I, the
question is quite clear, Piccolo. How would you describe your relationship with Gohan?”
There, that was better, no more fear!! After all, what was there to fear? A big, green guy
who can fly and shoot funky energy blasts from his hands? That’s not scary!!
He eyes me, obviously surprised by my boldness, then mumbles, “He was a kid I
trained. I taught him how to fight.” I wait for him to continue... wait... the wind howls a
bit... wait... a plane flies by... still wait.... but he doesn’t say anymore.
“Ah, I see,” I don’t, but what else could I say? “Is that all he was to you? A kid
you taught to fight? You wouldn’t say he was, oh, I don’t know, a son type of figure?”
“What?! No!!” he shouts, too quickly. I can see the sweat beginning to show on his
brow. So Mr. Piccolo was afraid to admit to having a soft spot for the kid. Well, this
was exactly the kind of dirt I had been looking for!! Just because he was my fav DBZ
guy, didn’t mean I wasn’t gonna look for some dirt on him!! I was, after all, there to find
out the truth for all fans!!
“Hmm, are you sure about that? I don’t know, it looked to me like you two were
pretty close. Especially when you died to save him-”
“I don’t like your questions,” he hisses, showing fangs again.
“Well, I don’t like your attitude!! I came all this way to find out what you are really
like, but you are lying to me!”
His eyes narrow, and I can see his fists clench. “So what? What are you going to
do about it? Cry?”
I feel my jaw drop. So much for Mr. Cool!! Well now, perhaps I was a coward at
times, but for the most part, I was a loudmouth, who liked to get her way!! “No, but I can
tell the whole world how you really feel about Gohan... all I have to do is edit what you
said in this conversation, and voila!! Your TRUE feelings will be exposed, showing the
big softy you really are!”
He lets out a growl. “You wouldn’t do that if you were a smart girl,”
“Oh no? Well then, maybe I’m not too smart, cuz I sure would!!” I state. There, if
he wanted to play that way, then I gladly would! I came to get a truthful and in-depth
look at Piccolo, and by god, I was going to!! “Now, Piccolo, why do you really wear that
cape and hat? I know everyone says it’s because it helps you train, but I don’t buy it. It
just makes you feel more like a super hero-”
I stop as I see the look on his face. His eyes are darting around nervously, as he
listens carefully to something. Turning his head from one side to the other, Piccolo
begins to panic. “Piccolo?”
“Shh!!!” he cries, sounding like a worried little kid. Still looking around frantically,
he suddenly begins to flap his arms.
I feel my jaw drop once again, as I stare at the flailing green man. Finally, I hear a
slight buzzing sound coming from above us. I look up and see a tiny bee flying towards
us. I look back at Piccolo, as he sees the insect, and I barely stop myself from laughing,
as his eyes grow wide with fear. “Piccolo?” I ask again. “What’s wrong?”
As the bee nears him, he leaps from the bench and begins swatting at it. “T-that!!
A b-b-bee!!” he cries, not sounding a bit like the tough guy we all know.
I continue to watch in wonder from the bench, making sure to keep the recorder
going, as he starts to dance around. The bee has taken an interest in him, and flies
around his head. Spinning around in circles, flapping his arms wildly, Piccolo tries to get
away. “A beee!!!” he shrieks again. Finally managing to hit the insect, he stops.
“So?” I ask innocently. “What can a bee do to you?”
Breathing raggedly, he ignores me, and continues to listen. Suddenly, I notice a
dark spot on his turban. Covering my mouth to stop from laughing, I watch as he
struggles to find the source of the buzzing. Seeing my gaze directed at his head,
Piccolo’s eyes slowly move up to his hat. “I-is it.... on me?” he whispers.
I slowly nod, feeling myself grin. I point to his turban. “On there,”
Piccolo freezes. I wait, thinking he is going to wait for it to fly away, then jump as
he let’s out an earsplitting scream and throws the hat from his green head. As the turban
sails into the air, he lets out another scream, and fires a powerful blast at it. Both the
turban and the bee are hit with the flash of light. I shield my eyes, and watch as the
burned turban slowly floats to the ground. The bee is no where in sight (obviously!)
Still breathing deeply, Piccolo walks over to the turban and slowly picks it up.
Letting out a giggle (I couldn’t help it anymore!), I drop my gaze as he glares at me. “I,
uh, um,”
“Shut up,” he growls. I look up and see the scowl on his face. “If anyone hears
about this...”
“No one will, IF I get to finish this interview at another time.” I announce. “I won’t
let anyone know of this little, incident, if you promise to meet me for another interview.”
“Why you-” he begins, but then sighs. “All right, I’ll do it. I’ll let you know when
I’m available.” Turning away from me, he places the charred turban on his head and
flies off.
Finally able to, I fall to the grass and begin to laugh hysterically. Man, who would
have thought these guys were so crazie!! As I had my laughing fit, I thought I caught a
glimpse of a figure floating above me, with a still smoking hat... Well, if he was still
sticking around, who knows?? Maybe he wasn’t angry after all! I had a feeling, that this
(strange as it was) was the beginning of a, well, interesting friendship.
