In this section of my page, called The Characters, I give a brief summary of all the major characters in The Wind Waker. If you want to know about any characters not featured here, or if you want to find out more about characters who are, just ask me.
Link For the first time in Zelda history it is made clear that this is not the same Link who starred in the other games. This Link is a decendant of the people who were chosen and told to go to the peaks of the highest mountains when Hyrule was flooded. He lives on Outset Island, where the stories of Link's adventures in Ocarina of Time have become legend. According to tradition, on a boy's twelfth birthday he must wear green clothes similar to those the hero in the legends wore. As the game begins, Link is woken up by his sister and told that it is his birthday. Undoubtedly, this is a birthday he won't forget.
Tetra Tetra is the leader of a group of pirates who aren't very smart. At the beginning of the game, Tetra has been kidnapped by a giant bird called the Helmaroc King. As it flies back to the Forsaken Fortress it passes over Outset Island. Tetra's pirates begin shooting at the bird using their ship catapault, and one of their shots connects. The bird drops her into a forest at the highest point of Outset Island. Link sees this and hurries into the forest to help her. After rescuing Tetra from some enemies, the Helmaroc King returns and grabs Link's sister, believing she is Tetra. To make up for this, Tetra agrees to take Link aboard her ship, and they sail off to the Forsaken Fortress.
Ganondorf The most famous Zelda villain returns! Ganondorf has found a way to escape the realm in which he was trapped and he's not happy. Still possessing the Triforce of Power, he seeks to attain the other two pieces and complete the Triforce. If he succeeds, all he needs to do is touch the Triforce and he can have any wish granted. This time Ganondorf's hideout is the Forsaken Fortress where he is imprisoning girls who have pointy ears, hoping one of them will be the holder of the Triforce of Wisdom. Unfortunately for him, Link's sister Aryll was kidnapped by his cohort, and there isn't anything Link won't do to get her back.
King of Red Lions Link's companion in this game is a talking boat called the King of Red Lions. Why can this boat talk and how does it know so much? Because it's special. But before the boat can be used, Link needs to find a sail. Once Link is out on the ocean, certain items (like bombs and the grappling hook) have different uses.
Aryll Aryll is Link's younger sister. When the game starts, she wakes up Link (who is asleep on the watchtower) and reminds him that it's his birthday. She also gives him her telescope, but he has to give it back to her the next day. After they see a girl fall into the forest on top of Outset Island, Link goes to save her. Just as he's leaving the forest Link sees Aryll on the other side of the bridge. She waves to him and begins crossing the bridge when a giant bird swoops down and flies off with her.
Grandma Link and Aryll's grandma is a kind old woman who lives in a small hut near the beach on Outset Island. She loves her grandchildren very much, and has made Link a traditional green outfit for his twelfth birthday. To celebrate, she plans on making Link his favorite soup and inviting the whole island over for a party. She has no clue that on this day she will lose not one grandchild, but two.
