    Hi everyone,

wow the video clips are really great! i've seen the defending champions clip on the liondancer website, but since these are asf files it's alot clearer and better. at least now i know what people are oohing and aahing about! oh how i wish Oz lion dancing was half as good! i tried to join them with a program i have called splitter, but since it wasn't uploaded to be joined, i'll have to do it manually with a video editing tool. anyone know if this is possible so i don't spend 10hrs trying to, and end up not being able to anyway?!

    thanks. Linda

You can play asf files with the new version of Windows Media Player. You can download it from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/Download/default.asp

This page gives you several choices including versions for Windows 2000, 98, 95, and Macintosh platforms. There are other players that will work also, but Media Player is a good all-around player that can handle many different types of files.

I just downloaded a few clips and watched them on version 6 for Windows NT and it worked fine after it downloaded a new codec. The process was automatic, so I didn't really have to do anything besides click a few buttons.

ok I was watching the 98' lion dance competition. One CD had the the actual comp, another was the interviews with some of the teams in which they didn't show their performance. They were labeled as "preliminaries." But I thought in a lion dance competition, you only get one chance? So were the teams that they actually showed the best out of all the rest or did they actually have to perform several performances, and those teams just happened to be the ones that made it up there? And which team was Kung Seng Keng?

Are you aware of how many teams there are? Its a large competition. The prelimanaries are there for taking the best 10 of the challengers to challenge the defending champs of the world lion dance competition. In a lion dance competition, you might get one chance, but this is the world champions. Other lion dance comps. are not on the scale of the world champs. The ones they show were all the teams from the final round. Kun Seng Keng was the silver lion at the beginning of disc 3. it says the team name before they performed.

    Sam,

I don't know who you are and have never heard you contribute anything to this list. Why did you have to start with spam? If we started to allow spam on this (probably) very big list, the whole thing would break down. AllAdvantage and all those other internet ad companies do work, but we don't care to know about those things through a closed mailing list intended to discuss a specific subject.

The first post you sent was a mistake that I can overlook and I simply deleted. But now you are retaliating against people who are right to say that spam doesn't belong on this list. That is just wrong. But for all you other guys, next time this happens just let one person remind the list that this doesn't belong here, and the rest of you try to ignore future spam. This list has been clean and friendly for years - let's keep it that way.

I would like to say we drop the subject, we could keep telling him to not send the spam, but it is his choice. Whether we read it or not and let it get to us is ours. But if both sides keep arguing back and forth, it no longer becomes a mailing list about lion dancing, it becomes more of a personal argument which completely defeats the purpose. I propose we forget the incident, and continue as before, and if he sends spam again, then it's his choice, for those who appreciate, fine, to the ones who don't delete it. Then we do away with all the useless banter. Okay?

    >so, what do you think about it compared to the southern style?

Dancing the buk see is a lot different from dancing the nam see.

The tail can see even less...almost nothing.

You can't switch because of the traditional design of the costume.

    You get hotter.

You get hairs stuck in your mouth.

Good cooperation between head and tail is more important with the shorter tail.

Size of head is smaller and balance is different.

Eyelid and mouth controls are operated at the hand holds, so the head usually doesn't need to let go of the hand holds.

Bo fat and movements of the head are more woot poot. Not as fierce-looking as the traditional styles of dancing nam see. Some might describe the bo fat as lighter.

Buy a dog hair brush to keep the hairs from looking matted and nappy.

If funds are available, go for the more expensive real hair instead of the synthetic hair. The real hair looks better, lasts longer, and is easier to keep.

Dancing the buk see is fun, but it seems most people who have had chances to dance both much prefer the nam see.

Subject: [LionDance] Spamming on the liondance list...

    Hi,

I am one of the maintainers of this mailinglist, but since I don't have a particular interest in liondancing per se, I set up procmail to send all liondance mail to my 'liondance' folder, which I glance through occasionally.

I have a few things to say on this matter.

    > I would like to say we drop the subject, we could keep telling him to not
    > send the spam, but it is his choice.

That's not entirely true. This is a private mailinglist. Like someone pointed out, it's a friendly list and it should stay that way. It's fairly large with 99 email addresses on the list.

Although there is no charter for this list, I do think 'no spamming!' would rank in the top 5. Spamming (or anything the members see as spamming) is NOT allowed and is seen as abuse of the mailinglist and the server it resides on.

If anybody abuses this mailinglist in some fashion, feel free to mail me (serhat@freud.et.tudelft.nl) and I will look into the matter. For now, 'stoopid_thing' has been removed from the mailinglist. This also has to do with the fact that I got some 'user unknown' responses from that address, so it wouldn't make sense keeping that address in the list anyway.

    I propose the following:

    - Spamming by members of the list can result in immediate removal from the list if at least 5 other members complain.

    - A person can return to the list after an incident if at least 10 members accept (everybody can make mistakes, right?)

    - Sending commercial email to the list is allowed, but there are costs involved. People may send commercial ads to the mailinglist at a frequency of less than two weeks. This is only allowed AFTER billing. Costs are a mere $50 per member. All earnings will be donated to liondance related activities.

What do you guys think about the above proposals? Ok, the last proposal was a little more on the humorous side, but if someone would actually want to pay $5k.. it should be considered ;-)

    Regards,

    Serhat Sakarya

Gee Yung International Martial Art Association is located in Honolulu, Hawaii. They are located in Honolulu's Chinatown district. They are the second oldest martial arts, lion dance school in Honolulu. Their sifu is Arthur Lee. Their head instructors includes his son, Harlan, and Shane Maihui. Shane is their lion dance coordinator and a very experienced drummer. They participated in the 1999 Hong Kong Lion Dance competition during Chinese New Year. They participated in the lion dance conference in San Francisco last year and learned a lot of materials from Master Siou. They currently are using Master Siou's lions and dragon in their performances. If you need more information, please email back and I will research more for you.
