    Hi guy,

Tangerines are ued as in Cantonese it sound the same with gold, ie "kam". Also in Mandarine and Cantonese it can sound the same as auspicious, ie. "ji" or "gut". It also looks golden. That's why it i o commonly used. Oranges however are never used as not only it has a no 'lucky' apeal but also difficult to peal. To arange the word jut peal and use the petals of the tangerine to arrange the word. Easiest is 'gut', "fuk" is a bit harder. I personally have never seen "fatt" nor I want to try it. :) When doing these 'words' you will have estimate how many tangerines to use. Personally I feel that the best way of eating it is not to smash them up as it is not nice to leave a mess on the floor of a host during any 'good' day.

    Hi,

We must remember that the Wong Fei Hung/Once upon a time in china series is fiction although based on true characters, most do not even live in the same era. It is the same with the lion dancing too. It only shows the shallow views of the movie writers. I felt sad watching it. However, it does reflect what the 'general public' views towards lion dancing, and it is up to us to change that image.

I was an extra in the movie jade. the producers didn't tell everyone that a car was going to come through the parade. So as soon as the car drove through, we all thought it was real,so we started throwing whatever we could at the car as it got away. Then after the black car left, they had a group of extras including Jason pound of Caruso's car.

Hi Deuces888@aol.com (unfortunately, I do not know your name),

Thank you for your response. I agree with you that k1le did not have a good response....I work in the Justice Dept. Criminal Prosecutions and Probation...and the policy (agreed on by experts the world over) is that for the public and the media to show great interest in gangs and gang activity is to help promote that gang and their activities (the gangs look for recognition)...so with k1le's avid interest and some e addresses on the list that that are also the names of gangs (not saying that these guys who have these are gang members or associates or even know that the e names used are also gang names), I began to become a little concerned and thus asked what was up with all the avid interest in gang activities (associated or not associated with Lion dance and Kung Fu Demos) instead of Lion Dance. Sorry you misunderstood the intent of my first post. To answer your question, I did not know about Marysville (I am Canadian and living in Canada, would not know about this), but with David Lei's post, I do now.

    All the best.

    Hey you guys,

does anyone know when Bombday is in Marysville? I was just asking my sihing about that today. He said that when he used to go, each ring would have a number on it. The reason why people would bid so high for these rings was because some of them had fortunes in it. You have to bring it back to the monk at the temple to see if your ring has a fortune. I think that's pretty interesting. I want to check it out, and also wants a ring, but being a girl, I don't think I will have much of a chance against an intersection full of guys...haha. Anyway, I would appreciate any info I can get on this. I tried the link in one of the previous post, but it's not there anymore. I would like to go with a few of my sidai's to this event. Thanks.

    Erick,

Jonie Uniforms in San Francisco sells the triangle flags (custom made) 9 feet by 6 feet. I believe that is a pretty standard size for them.

Kuen Way Martial Arts in Canada sells them in three different sizes: 10x7, 8x6, and 6.5x4 (all in feet).

They are pretty expensive ($150-$500 US) depending on the size and how many characters you want on them.

Our group has aluminum flagpoles that we use to carry them around. I'd imagine a medium piece of bamboo would also work fine. Most pickup trucks have slots in the edge of the sides around the bed that you can drop the pole into and secure them with cords. If your truck doens't have them you can make concrete footings that will do the trick.

For this you'll need to make a trip down to your hardware store and get the following stuff:

    1 bag of concrete mix
1 small bag of gravel (optional)
1 small bag of sand (optional)
    1 5-gallon bucket
    1 3-gallon bucket
1 2-foot long section of pipe that will fit snugly around your flagpole
    1 plug for this pipe

mix the concrete with water and add sand and gravel if you want. This will help the concrete hold together better, but it will work fine without it. don't overwet the concrete or else it'll take too long to dry. It doesn't need to be liquid to work, but should be the consistency of clay. Mix it up in the large bucket and then pour it into the smaller bucket.

Before pouring the concrete into the small bucket, plug one end of the pipe so it won't fill with concrete and set it upright in the middle of the bucket. Pour and pack the concrete around it and if necessary secure it so it stays upright. Let it dry at least 24 hours before using.

These will anchor the base fine as long as the poles are also secured with cords, especially in windy areas or on a truck. If you want to make a base that will let the flag stand by itself, you'll need to make one with a wider base.

    Hope that helps,

    Chris

We have poles that you can collapse, so that transporting the pole is easier as opposed to transporting bamboo poles that cant collapse. Just something you might want to think about. I believe you can get the aluminum ones at a hardware store. Not sure though.

    Hey Erick,

The poles we have are pretty old--they've been in the group longer than I have so nobody really knows where they came from. They're probably about 11 or 12 feet high (they don't fit in a standard room) so we can only use them outdoors or in rooms with really high ceilings.

You should be able to get a set from any place that sells flags. If you describe what you need and maybe give them a picture they should be able to make some suggestions. I'm thinking maybe talk to a GOOD outdoors supply store (like REI) and see if you can order some custom tent poles that'll do the trick.

Bamboo can be hard to find a decent source for. Out here in Los Angeles there's a polynesian supply store that sells all kinds of bamboo and neat tropical things like that. Every now and then Pier 1 Imports has some bamboo, but it's kind of hit or miss if it'll be suitable for holding a flag.

    Take care,

    Chris

Other movies with lion dance in it . Is probably Tai - Chi 2 with jacky wu and cristy cheung , and other actors . Tai-Chi 2 , although it was only a movie I got inspired with how powerful Tai - Chi is , but knew it allready . And the ceremony where the Tai - Chi master was going into seclusion from the public , so he was going to wash his hands into this golden bowl , he was attacked by a man who wanted to challenge and he won , guests attend his ceremony , as well as the lion dance at the begining part . I like the way the lion dance did the jump too.

Also Ten Tigers of Kwantung , which had the male and the female buddha . As the lion was dancing . The master with ku feng , even for a short 10 minutes or couple seconds . It was good though.

I wonder if the hand washing ceremony , where the sifu is going to retire from teaching , still exists in the U.S. or certain parts of China or Hong Kong . I know in Hawaii this Wing Chun master also retired from teaching himself , but I don ' t if he did this ceremony too , himself. Anyway , take care fellow lion dancers.

    Deuces888,

Hello , Yes , the video tape is good because I bought one myself . I ' ve had mines for about 3 years . It shows the difference between the way the fat san and the way Hok san lion heads are being played . It also demonstrates the 3 star drum beat , 5 star , and the 7 star drum beat and how it ' s played on the drum . Also how to hold the stick and touching the drum , to smudder the sound of the drum.

The different lion dance techniques are also being demonstrate . I made a copy for my friend who is involved with a kung fu / lion dance club , himself . And played drum for the club , and he also played the 5 star drum beat on the club ' s drum and it sounded good . I was watching him play . The drum beat sounded familiar but little did I know that he learned it from video tape I made for him . It sounded good though . Real traditional Hong Kong style.

Other than that Tat Mau Wong ' s video on begining and advance lion dance is good . Their lion dance version is basically Choy Li Fut style. Tat Mau Wong Learned his Choy Li Fut from Sifu Lee Koon Hung , who died 4 or 5 years ago , I think . He died from complications from a heart transplant operation . Too bad , because the sifu was good.

Panther ' s production besides the Tat Mau Wong lion dance tape . They now have the lion dance tape that ' s directly from China or Hong Kong . With different lion and dragon dance groups . I still got to get that one . Anyway, take care.

well i went there in search for a reasonably priced drum. for one thing it took me a long time to get a hold of her at the right time. i suggest calling her a few days before your wanna go and make an appointment with her. she'll probably ask you what you 're looking for. this is because all of her lion dance stuff is in the attic and it's really hard to bring down the stuff. she won't let you go up there and see all the merchandise your self because she's not insured up there. this was kind of a bad thing because i wanted to see all that she had before i knew what to get. the sifu siow heads that she had were ok. it seemed like they were not the REALLY nice ones but pretty good. She also does custom lion pants matching, but for a high price. every thing there it pretty high priced. she had brought down two sizes of drums even before i got there. she sed the large drum (26" top) was $290. and the medium (23" top) was $250. her prices went up from her web site. i told her that i could get the large one at darwells for $225 and she was all telling me about how her drums were "A" quality. which i mean they were better than darwells, but she wouldn't bargan at all. the drum was for my high school so our budget was low and she was still kinda asking for $290. was she willing to bargan with any of your guys?

    Hi D.J.

We used to use an older drum before we bought one from Darwell...Every time we practice or go for a performance, we took some newspapers or any type of paper and burn it inside the drum to heat the skin up...This will tighten up the drum...This will help tighten the drum skin for a while... it will become flat again after a day or even less. Best thing to do is to heat it up before you go to a performance every time. Also, I would only do this for old (flatten) drums... Another way is to put the flatten drum in front of a blowing heater for a while...keep an eye on it...when the skin becomes hard then take it down or turn the heat off.

Does this answer your question? Anyone else do anything else different?

    Hi....

Looooonnng time no write :-) Anyway, the burning paper and heater is not that great, with very short period of effectiveness. The best technique is one a sifu from Toisan taught me. We had a drum that wasd very old.......always flat and low sound. He took a wet towel. Turned drum upside down. And put the wet towel over the underside skin that is untreated. Left overnight. Then in morning put drum in hot sun,(where there was no breeze to cool it down) and rotated it during the day to get the direct rays. The result...........amazing. That drum was the tightest drum I ever felt, AND never went out of tune for about 2 years..........which is when we did it again

    lol.
