Happy New Year, Folks! That's both for 1998 AND the year of the Tiger!

We celebrated a much anticipated event yesterday at the Chinese-American dance theater in Saint Paul, Minnesota. We christened-hoi gong-the group's first brand new southern style lion, acquired from Clarion Music Center in San Francisco. It's an orange and gold one. The turn out was great. Parents were appreciative that they children now have witnessed a lion dance and an opportunity to learn it. Our next outing will be 1/31/98 at the theater Chinese New Year show at a local high school.

    Keep well and dance on!

I would like to hear some tradional "hoi gon" (waking the Lion) ceremony procedures. I understand everyone does it differently. Our school lights incense, dot the eyes, and ties a ribbon around the horn.

We have a new lion for the New Year and would like some other ideas of waking the lion.

I have searched days on end and in every search engine looking for the drum beats, or music of Chinese lion dancing. I myself am from the Ching Wu Lion Dance Society situated in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We have a few different styles of drumming, but we're still trying to find the most traditional, authentic beats. When or if you find some, you may send me an attached file or simply inform me of the address.

    THANK YOU =)

    Hi Tim,

Welcome to the lion dance list. Things have been quiet lately. We must all be gearing up for the season.

We had this discussion before. The traditional teaching method was watch and imitate. This meant that there was not a real formal method of writing music.

Someone on this list has contact with a Sifu in Singapore that has created a system. My Si-Sook also has a system but we haven't written it down (actually it's an assignment of mine that I've been lagging on).

Both systems are better references then actual play sheets. Our system takes the oral tradition to paper and has phrases like Duk-Dum-Dum for a side hit and two even hits on the drum.

Not much help but if you have a system, let us know about it and maybe we can record our different styles down.

    Stephen.
