Fellow lion dancers -
Thanks for all the messages of support and the ideas. I feel like we should all sing the Titanic movie theme song, "We must go on!" :)
Joking aside, I have been exchanging email with John at SDSU and it doesn't look too good for keeping the list there. He basically shot down all of my counter-offers, including getting the Asian Pacific Student Association to run the list, or getting faculty sponsorship for the list. I understand his position, the lion dance list doesn't really have much to do with SDSU. I am grateful for the 3 years that they did host it, but now it is time to move.
I spent most of tonight searching the web for a solution and have come up with 2 possibilities:
1) there is a place that offers Majordomo service (the kind that the list is on right now) for a measly $50 per year. Compared to most other places this is a savings of $50-100 dollars. The advantage is that majordomo pretty much runs itself and transfering the list would be quick and painless. The down side is it costs money.
2) I have found a free service that sells advertising on its website to pay for its list hosting service. There would be no ads in the messages, but you need to check their website once a month or so. This would take me about a day to set up and transfer everybody in.
I would rather not have anyone set the list up through their university because they'll probably run into this same situation when they graduate in a few years. Since I want to keep the list free for everyone, I am leaning toward going with the second option. If this solution sounds good to everyone, I'll start setting it up and it should be ready to go fairly quickly.
In other news, I am scheduling some time this month to update the archives of the list in the Lion's Den. I hope to at least have 1996 all caught up by the end of August! Hard to believe I'm so far behind... :)
Keep the faith,
Chris
AND THE NEWS KEEPS GETTING BETTER....
hey chris,
it's me. i'm willing to offer $50 to keep the list going via a majordomo service since it's the better of the two options proposed. just give me your snail mail so i can send you a check. 'k? i've enjoyed the stories and made friends from the list. will be visiting 2 of 'em in honolulu end of september.

Chris,
I live in Tacoma, Washington State. It is about 35miles south of Seattle. Washington is in the North West of the USA. I hope you could find where I am at. I am planning to be in San Jose for a wedding from 18th - 20th of this month. Could you please find the address for me. Do you know any one who live close to Seattle or Tacoma and can provide some Lion Dancing lesson. I am looking forward to hear from you. I really appreciate your help.
Thank you,

Hi, Chris,
How are you? I am Nelson Chiew, full time international student from Winona State University, MN. I need a favor from you. I hope that you can help me.
Recently, we are organizing the lion dance team under the Cross Cultural Outrach Program - International Student Office. Actually, we did start practicing the lion dance from seniors last semester. Now they left the team due to graduation.
We meet a couple problems in organizing the team.
1. We need a new lion head and a cymbal. Where can we get the lion dance equipment?
2. We just have some of the lion dance knowledge from our seniors. We are not professional enough in lion dance. Is it other way that you can help us ?
We have about 20 international students interested in lion dance. The International Student Office is willing to give their help to us. So I hope that you can help us in organizing the lion dance team. In the other hand, we also promote the chinese cultural.
Yours sincerely,
Nelson Chiew
Chris,
I forgot to thank you in the last mail. I really apprecitre your help if you can help us in organizing the lion dance team.
