Subject: Changes in Saturday's Schedule-Feb 13th

Hi All,
I am curious as to how much money a Lion Dance group can charge for a performance. Do you charge differently for different performance?
For example, how much would you charge to perform for:
1) Store/business Grand Opening
2) Store/bussiness New Year oppening
3) School (for show and tell, or cultural related reasons)
4) Weddings
5) Parades
6) Concert/dance openings
7) any other situations?
Is there a standard to what you can charge or is it up to each individual group? If so, would any of you tell me what is reasonable to charge people for a performance?
If there is some thing that is not clear from my question...please let me know and I will try my best to clarify it.
Thank you for your information.

Hi All,
My name is Duc Vo. I live in Seattle Washington and I go to the University of Washington.
I started doing the Lion Dancing since 1991. I do the Southern Lion (Vietnamese style). The group I belong to is called the Gia Dinh Phat Tu Lieu Quang Lion Dance Troupe (Co Lam temple). This is a Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association and we're trying to preserve our culture. Lion Dancing is what I like to do; there is still a great many things I need to know about this art and I am willing to learn.
We do most of our performance during the new year for local Vietnamese stores and businesses as well as for the local schools.
I find this mailing list to be very interesting.
I recieve a message today about the Liondancer's conference in San Fransisco that I'd love to attend. If there are any of you on this list who are in the Seattle area that is thinking of going, we might get together and plan to do down together.
It's been my pleasure knowing all of you.

Sf bay area.
this weekend is the opening of the Chinese New year festival in San Francisco Chinatown. There will be a mini parade down grant ave. at 11:30 .. lot of flowers and orchards and blossoms for sale. Best deals are on Sunday afternoon when the street vendors are closing up.. Since it is valentine day Sunday you could make some good deals.

I hope you can come to the Liondancer conference. as you know the cost is just getting to sf. and food is cheap in Chinatown.. coming to sf is a lot cheaper the going to Malaysia or the far east..
come on down it going to be fun.
Hi Layton and David,
Thanks for the hardy welcome.
I am planning on comming to the conference. I have read the information on the www.liondancer.com page but I am still not sure about transportations. I do not know the area down there, how will I get around? Will they have someone come out to pick me up from the airport and take me back to the airport? How do I contact for these informations? (oh, I can send these questions to their info@liondancer.com e-mail box.)
Well, hopefully I can make some friends from this list before I get down there so that I don't feel left out.
Who else is going from this mailing list? How come there is not much discussion about this topic here? Are you guys not interested? (It seems like the list has been quiet...I thought I give you guys something to talk about).
Until next time,
DVo

depending on what time and day you come in I might be able to give you a ride into town. I work in the south bay and live in sf.
the sf airport is about 15 min south of sf. you could catch a airport bus to take you into sf.. San Francisco is great for getting around with out a car. The buses in sf can take you to every part of the city. If your based in Chinatown you can walk to most of the sites. It depends on your budget. Do you plan to stay for both weekends. What's the fare from Seattle now.? I was born in Seattle and came to sf when i was very your.. my father and my grandfather grew up there. I still have cousins and aunts and uncles living in Seattle.
do you think the Vietnam lion dancing is different from the local styles of lion dancing. We know someone who just bought a lion from Vietnam.
Hi Layton. This is Henry from hawaii. Do you know how much that person paid in US$ for the vietnamese lion ? And if he ordered it here in the states or just went to veitnam?
Thanks Henry
Hi Layton and David,
Thanks for the response.
I had checked on air fair prices to go form Seattle's Seatac Airport to San Francisco and here are the results:
Carier Price Contact # United Airline $137 1800-241-6522 Alaska Air $137 1800-252-7522 Horizon Air $137 1800-547-9308These are the non stop flight...and they are the cheapest among all others. Any preference on which carier? Time slot is still widly available.
I am planning on comming down on the 25th of Marth at around 12 or 2pm (SF time) and return on the 28th of March after the cocktails.
Layton, maybe you can come pick me up from the Airport? What time would be good for you? Also I had contacted the info@liondancer.com but I had not recieved a response...David, do you know if I get down there that early will the YMCA still be available to sleep at or could any of you hook me up with some one local there?
To answer Layton's questions about the differences between the Vietnamese and the Chinese Lion Dance style...to be honest, I don't think I can answer that question for you. Eventhough I had been doing the Lion Dance since 1992, I am still an amature (a beginner) and I do not have contact with other local Chinese Lion Dance group to exchange ideas. I can only do basic foot work on the ground and basic drumming. That is why I am so excited to attend this conference in SF. There are a lot I can learn from you guys. (More on these difference latter...)
I got to go practice now for the Yew Year eve performance at the Lieu Quang Temple in Seattle.
Happy New Year to you all and Happy Dancing!
DVo
P.S.: I guess, from how on, I will keep my trip conversion personal with either David or Layton (that is if you don't mind) and only share common things with the list. Cheers :-)!
Hey there,
I was just reviewing the fares earlier, and to let you know that Oakland is only 10-20 minutes away from San Francisco(traffic permitting) and you could get a real good deal through Southwest. Currently, the promotion rate is going for I believe $39 one way. That promo is good til I believe April which would definitely cover the dates during the conference.

Hello all,
welcome to the new listmembers, hope you enjoy your time on this (rather quiet ... everyone out practising??) list.
Gung Hay Fat Choi!
For those in the Netherlands: tomorrow (17th) there will be liondance celebrations in Rotterdam; due to my 'exile' in Paris, I won't be able to make it. I will however be able to make it on Saturday, when the dancing is in The Hague. It supposedly starts at around 2 pm, (tomorrow will start at the same hour I think, even less sure..)..
I'm drowning in work,.. to all those performing: dance well!!
Rob
henry,
David on this list has the details. if he see this post I am sure he will share the info with you.. I heard there was some problem with customs and fumigation
Actually Henry, I did see a small lion from Vietnam in Honolulu Chinatown. It belongs to one of our ex-members. His father owns a store on Hotel Street and he might have contacts to Vietnamese lion factories. The head is pretty sturdy - instead of newspaper, they used a brown paper like the thickness of your supermarket shopping bags.
Maybe if I see you at the day time Choi Chang (2/20?), I'll point out the store to you.
Later...
Sherman

Hi all,
For anyone in the Seattle/Tacoma area, we are doing four (ug!) lion dances this weekend. Today and tommorow (this weekend), we'll be at the Emerald Queen Casino by Tacoma, lion dance starts about 2pm (you know how the start times go!). Tonight, we are doing a grand opening lion dance at NIAOM (my school where I study acupuncture), at 701 N. 34th St, #300. It's in the Lake Union Quadrant center, northern most building (look for the crowd), right under the Aurora bridge in Freemont. Starts about 6:30pm tonight, Saturday (after the speakers... and you know how long it can go if our Chinese professors start speaking... ;-). Sunday around noon, we'll be doing the big dance/parade in Seattle's chinatown on King street for the Bing Kung Association. This will be a lion dance up the street with a procession of lions, banners, weapons, demo's, oh my! I think I'm going to be sore on Monday... ;-)

Hello all!
Just to introduce myself, my name is Wilbur from the island of Oahu in Hawaii. I'm part of the Honolulu branch of the Lung Kong Physical Cultural Club. We practice kung-fu and lion dancing. My friend and I are getting bored with the same old lion dancing that's going around here... and wanted to learn new tricks. Anyone see the lion dance championships? The one where the Malaysia A team won this year? I want to learn more tricks like that. Well, if anyone would like to share their knowledge please email! Thank you!
One more thing, if any of you will be in Hawaii this weekend, Jackie Chan is in town and we will be doing a two performances for him, one at Sea Life Park and the second at Kahala Mall today (Saturday). Tomorrow is his exhibition show.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew if there are any films of traditional southern chinese lion dances. I was particularly interested in some of the teaser roles, like going into the cave to wake the lions, the husband and wife teasers, or related information. It seems like most of the dances I've seen are a mix of northern/southern dancing.
Thanks
Geoff
Geoff,
dr. william hu gave a lecture/demonstration on the teaser around a year ago in san francisco. i am trying to track down the video. however, dr. hu will be at the lion dance conference in march and i plan to have him repeat his demonstration for a few interested parties at the conference.
