Ticonderoga Fencing Tournament

On May 30, 1999, Kristy, Mike and myself went to Fort Ticonderoga for an epee tournament.  This tournament was different from most as it was set outside.  The fencing strips were set up in the fort's parade grounds.  The grounds were only dirt covered so things got a little dusty at times.  The fort was still open to normal visitors so we had plenty of spectators and I am sure they were more than  little surprised to see lots of people sword fighting.

Here is Kristy (in the black pants) fencing on the near strip.  She won this bout but later lost her first bout in the direct elimination (D.E.) round
Here is Mike in one of his D.E. bouts.  His opponent had beaten me in the seating round and had bested Kristy in her first D.E. bout.  Mike upheld the honor of the club and beat him.
Here is Mike in another of his D.E.  bouts.  This is a rarity, two lefties facing each other.  Since a lefty doesn't often face another one it can be confusing to them.  Mike eventually won this bout, though it was close most of the time
After Kristy and I were both eliminated we explored the fort.  On the other side of the gateway is where the parade grounds are and where most of the matches took place.   A couple of minutes after this picture was taken we were forced to get of the curtain wall.  For some reason they didn't like us sitting there.  Maybe it had to do with the 30 foot drop on the other side of the wall.
This is a shot from the back of the fort.  The parade grounds is inn front of those two buildings
Here is Mike and Kristy at the end of the day in front of my truck.  Mike wound up in third place.  The flowers Kristy is holding were part of his prize.  Only the daisy survived the trip home.  For some reason they didn't seem to like sitting in a hot truck while we were eating dinner.  The daisy actually lived for a few weeks after the tournament.
