Violence:  Violence is reasonable.

Alex barely avoided being caught in the blast that ripped apart the tree she was standing next to. Splinters flew in every direction and imbedded themselves in whatever was in their flight path, including skin. She flinched at the pain, but quickly blocked it out. Blocked it out just like she blocked out the pain from the other injuries that covered her body. <I'm going to have something to remember this one by. If I survive. > The grim thought made her focus back on the battle at hand.
She looked around for the rest of her squad. Pete was laying face down in the grass about a hundred feet away from her, Sybil was leaning against a tree looking like she was out of the fight, and Josh was still standing, barely. <Central Park, of all places to end up in a fight with another squad.> They were supposed to be on the same side, but competition and ambition were the sparks that started this round.
Alex braced herself for another round of attacks. Her opponent flew in fast, bearing down on her like an arrow to a target. From the corner of her eye she saw a bright flash behind her and then felt the impact of the incoming human-missile. She felt her feet leave the ground and the air rushing by her face. The last things Alex felt were branches and leaves tearing at her face and the hard impact of the ground.

Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm, strolled through Central Park and was enjoying the late afternoon weather. It was a mild seventy degrees, not a cloud in the sky and very little humidity. Nice weather even without her having a hand in it. The sun was beginning to sink below the city skyline and a slight breeze stirred the few leaves lying on the ground. Birds tweeting and the sound of crickets chirping filled the early evening air. A sense of calm enveloped her and she sighed contently. She stopped a second to take a look around. There were a few couples walking hand in hand around her. Each person focusing on the person they were with, as if nothing else existed in the world. Lovers out for a walk in the fading light. Storm sighed heavily. Seeing the couples reminded her how her two good friends used to feel about one another.
Remy and Rogue have always had some problems, but they always managed to get through them, until now. Storm wondered where her Cajun friend was and even wondered if he was alive. She had to believe he was alive. If anyone could find someway to survive it was her Cajun friend. Storm was furious at Rogue for leaving him for dead in Antarctica. There were times Storm was tempted to slap some sense into that girl. She of all people shouldn't be judging someone else because of his past. It was very hypocritical of her to do that. Storm's anger boiled inside of her the more she thought about Rogue leaving her best friend to die in the frozen waste. <Forget about that for now Ororo. You are here to relax a little. >
Storm took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She focused on her surroundings to get her mind off of her friend. The shadows cast by the trees and bushes were getting longer and darker as night approached. She was watching the shadows lengthen when something caught her eye under a bush. She walked over to take a closer look. It was a boot. Storm moved the bush back a little and discovered that there was a leg attached to the boot. She moved some branches out of the way to reveal an unconscious woman. Storm checked for a pulse. She found one, it was faint, but it was there. The woman was wearing the remnants of some kind of uniform Storm didn't recognize. Blood was splattered all over the woman's body and many cuts and gashes helped to soak the uniform with blood. She noticed the word mutant on a patch on the right shoulder.
Storm didn't hesitate. She scooped the woman up in her arms and called upon the winds to lift the two of them up into the air. She hit her COM badge.
"Storm to Beast."
"Beast here," replied a male voice.
"Hank prepare the medlab. I am bringing in an unconscious woman, a mutant. Pulse is very faint and many cuts and gashes covering her body."
"I'll be waiting for you Storm. Beast out."

Rogue smashed another sentinel into a pile of rubbish. That was five down and one more to go. This danger room session was helping to get her pent-up emotions out. She still felt angry, hurt and betrayed even though a full month had passed since those events in Antarctica. This was something that would take a long time to get over. She knew talking about it helped, but she really didn't want to talk to anyone here. In their eyes, her actions were hypocritical. She knew Remy had a past. A past he wasn't proud of, but she didn't think that it was as bad as it turned out to be. To think, that the man she loved, no used to love, could do such a thing was unthinkable. Anger welled up inside of her and a new adrenaline rush filled her veins. She flew above the head of the remaining sentinel dodging lasers as she flew. She started to fly towards her target, when the room started spinning. Her head felt light and a wave of dizziness overwhelmed her. <Ah can't black out now. > She increased her speed and impacted the thing's head with her fist. The metal crumpled like paper and the machine came to a complete stop. Blackness descended upon Rogue and she hit the floor hard.

Robert Drake, also known as Iceman, was searching the mansion and grounds for Rogue. He checked her room, her favorite spot on the roof, the pond and the rec room, but not a sign of Rogue was to be seen. They were supposed to go shopping in Salem Center and catch a movie. It was very unlike Rogue to forget about a shopping trip, since shopping was one of her favorite pastimes. Bobby hoped this would lift her spirits a little. Rogue had been in a black mood ever since she came back from Antarctica. Came back from Antarctica without Gambit. Bobby never really cared for the Cajun, but he was part of the team and part of the X-men family. He knew Rogue was hurting inside and no doubt because of the Cajun. Rogue was one of his closest friends and he hated to see her hurting so much. Bobby had tried to get her talk about what happened while she was in Antarctica, but she didn't want to talk about it. Even now, a month after the incident Rogue wouldn't say a word about what happened. Bobby gave a sigh and headed towards the danger room to see if by some chance Rogue was there.
The sight he saw when the door opened stunned him. The remains of six sentinels lay in twisted heaps around the room and an unconscious Rogue lay on the floor. He ran over to her and knelt down beside her. There were no signs of any serious injuries, but Bobby wanted to make sure she was all right. He checked her pulse. It was there, but it was a little weak. He iced up and scooped the unconscious Rogue in his arms and sledded all the way to the medlab.
"Hank!" he yelled when the door to the medlab opened up.
"Over here Bobby," came a voice from across the room..
"Hank it's Rogue! I found her unconscious in the danger room!" he exclaimed as he laid the inert Rogue on one of the medical beds in the lab.
Dr. Henry McCoy, also known as Beast, looked up from the text he was reading and immediately dropped it on the floor as he bounded over to his patient.
"How long has she been like this?"
"I don't know. I found her a few minutes ago in the danger room like this."
"Could you tell what she was doing?"
"I saw the remains of some sentinels in the room. I guess she wanted to get some exercise," Bobby said as he gave  his friend a worried look.
"Well, it doesn't look like she was injured, at least I don't see any outward physical indications of injury."
"Wh…where am Ah?" Rogue said quietly as she slowly opened her eyes.
"You my dear are in the medlab. Bobby found you unconscious in the danger room and promptly brought you to      here."
"Rogue, what happened?" Bobby asked taking one of her gloved hands.
"Ah don't know. One minute Ah was fine and the next Ah was light headed an' doing a nosedive for the floor. Ah must 'a blacked out."
"Did anything else happen to you besides blacking out?"
"No Beast. Ah managed to destroy the sentinels without any injuries. Ah just feel like sleeping now," Rogue said as she stiffled a yawn.
"Alright. But as your doctor I am ordering you to stay here in the lab until I can run some tests on you. Here put this on and then you can sleep," he said handing her a dampening collar.
"You're the doctor sugah," Rogue said taking the collar from Beast.
"Just make sure you remember that. Bobby would you please go upstairs and keep an eye out for Storm? She's bringing in a new patient."
"Sure Hank," he said turning around to leave.
"Thanks Bobby," Rogue called to him. He turned to look at her.
"Anytime Rogue. Anytime."

Storm arrived at the mansion ten minutes later. She landed near the front door where Bobby was waiting for her. He took the woman from Storm and went sliding off in the direction of the medlab. Henry had the woman on a table and hooked up to monitoring equipment by the time Storm arrived in the medlab. Storm was so intent on watching Beast with the woman she almost failed to notice Rogue in a nearby bed.
"Hank, what's wrong with Rogue?"
"Huh? Oh. Bobby found her unconscious in the danger room. She showed no signs of injury, and eventually regained consciousness after a little while. She said she blacked out in the danger room. But, I am going keep her here for some tests. What is the story on this woman?"
"I found her under a bush in Central Park. She looked pretty beat up and there's a patch on her right shoulder identifying her as a mutant so I decided to bring her here."
"Good decision," Hank said as he walked over to the intercom. "Dr. Reyes I need your assistance in the medlab as soon as possible."
"Do you think she'll make it?"
Storm asked with concerned look on her face.
"I won't know until I get an idea of the full extent of her injuries. Most look like superficial wounds but…." he said leaving his sentence unfinished.
"Please keep me informed of her status. Bobby lets leave Hank to his work," Storm said to the young man beside her. He nodded and followed her toward the door. They were nearly plowed over by the newest X-woman, Cecilia Reyes, as she rushed through the door.
"Sorry," she mumbled as she ran past them.
Hank and Cecilia were quickly engrossed in conversation while they examined the mystery woman. They didn't notice the other two X-men leave the room. A few minutes later Hank and Cecilia were looking over the woman's x-rays.
"Looks like a broken arm and a few broken ribs. The rest of her injuries appear to be superficial cuts and bruises," Cecilia said as she pointed to the x-rays. Both of them had their backs to the mystery woman and did not see her injuries start to heal at a very rapid rate. Hank turned around to check on their patient and was flabbergasted. There wasn't a trace of a single scratch on the woman.
"Cecilia I think you should take a look at this."
"We should start setting…" she paused after turning around and seeing what had Henry so amazed.
"I think we have a patient here whose mutant power is healing. By my guess it's even more powerful than Wolverine's healing. Perhaps we should take another set of x-rays to make sure her bones set properly?"
"Yes. That sounds like a very good idea."

They took another set of x-rays and discovered that the woman's bones mended perfectly. Hank was checking her vital signs when she started to come to. She opened her eyes and looked right at Hank.
Alex found herself staring into the face of a huge, blue, furry mutant.
"Where's the rest of my squad? How are they?" she asked starting to sit up. Her body protested the movement with pain.
"You are the only one we found. You had some broken bones and many cuts and bruises, but you seem to be healed now. Please lay back down so we can finish examing you," Hank said in a reassuring tone.
"Where am I? Who are you?"
"I am Dr. Henry McCoy and this is Dr. Cecilia Reyes. You are at Xavier's Institute of Higher Learning. You were brought here after one of our students found you unconscious in Central Park."
"What happened to the rest of my squad?"
"Like I stated, you were the only one we found."
"But others in my squad were hurt! I am responsible for them! You must find out what happened to them!"
"Cecilia…"

Cecilia had a hypodermic full of sedative ready incase the woman became upset. She poked the woman with the needle and started to inject the sedative.
"Oww! Hey what are you giving me?"
"This is just to calm you down,"
Cecilia said matter of factly. The woman was already feeling the affects of the sedative and within a minute she was sleeping.
"I'm going to go talk to Storm," Henry said starting towards the door. "Can you check on the results of the tests that I gave Rogue? They should be ready by now," he said not waiting for a response.

        * * *

Hank made his way upstairs and he eventually found Storm in the kitchen drinking a cup of tea.
"How's the woman?" Storm asked looking up from her cup of tea.
"Completely healed."
Storm gave Beast a puzzled look. "Healed?"
"Seems like she has the same power as Wolverine. Only it seems to be stronger," Beast said as be started to make a fresh pot of coffee. "All surface wounds and broken bones were healed in a matter of minutes."
"Has she regained consciousness?"

"Yes. She came to, however, she became very agitated and we had to give her a mild sedative," he said pulling up a chair and sitting down.
"Well, looks like we will wait until she awakens and is calm enough so we can talk to her," Storm said and then took a sip of her tea. "Any news about why Rogue blacked out?"
"None yet, but I suspect that we will know shortly." Beast got up and poured himself a cup of the fresh coffee. He sat down and began to drink his coffee. The two X-men sat in silence, each focusing on the thoughts running around inside their heads. Cecilia walked in with coffee mug in hand. She poured herself a cup and sat down at the table.
"How do you do that? You always seem to know when there's a fresh pot of coffee on," Storm said looking at the woman.
"I don't know. Instinct I guess."
"What were the results of the tests that I ran on Rogue?"
"Well there's no other way to put this, but Rogue is pregnant."
"What?"
Storm asked shocked at the news.
"From the night her and Gambit spent together in Antarctica before his so called trial," Beast said in a quiet voice.
"Why didn't you tell me about that Beast?"
"I thought it was something that Rogue should tell you if she wanted to."
"Have you told Rogue yet?"
Storm asked the newest member of the X-men.
"No. She was still sleeping when I found out. Beast what made you think of running a pregnancy test on her?"
"Well I knew they spent the night together, and under the circumstances I didn't think they were…. well… 'prepared',"
Beast said with a slight smile.
"Well at least we know why she passed out. I think Gambit should be found and told. That's IF, and a big if, we can find him," Storm said thinking about what her close friend might think about becoming a father. "Beast, will you work with Psylocke to see if you can track our missing X-man?"
"Sure Storm. By the way who is going to tell Rogue?"
Beast asked knowing the task would not be an easy one.
"I think you and I should Hank," Storm replied in a confident tone. "I will call Scott and advise him of the situation. Maybe Jean would be willing to help find Remy."

Alex opened her eyes as soon as the woman doctor left the room. She knew the sedative wouldn't have any effect on her, so she played along until the room was empty. She tried to get up, but her body was sore. Her mutant power healed her, but it would leave her weak for awhile. Alex knew she would be barely able to walk if she did leave the bed. She looked around at her surroundings. She saw strange equipment all around and wondered exactly what kind of place she woke up in. The equipment looked like it was straight out of a science fiction novel. She noticed she wasn't completely alone. Another woman, probably another patient of the two doctors, occupied the next bed. She studied the woman closely. Alex figured her to be around nineteen or twenty and in good physical condition. The woman had auburn hair with a white stripe bleached down the middle. Alex was still studying the other woman when she began to stir. She turned her head in Alex's direction and Alex found herself looking into a pair of emerald green eyes.
"Hi. Ah'm Rogue."
Alex wasn't sure if she should answer the woman, but she seemed friendly enough. "I'm Alex," Alex said quietly.
"Nice to meet you Alex," Rogue said with a smile on her face.
"What squad are you in Rogue?"
"Squad? Ah'm not sure Ah understand you. Ah don't belong to any squad."

"Well you're a mutant so you must be on a squad," Alex replied slightly confused.
"Ah'm a student here at Xavier's Institute of Higher Learning and a member of the X-men."
"X-men? What is the X-men?"
"The X-men are a team formed by Charles Xavier to help mutants and humans live together. At least that's his dream. Sometimes it seems we're far from it,"
Rogue replied with a trace of sadness in her voice. "You've never heard of the X-men?"
"No," Alex responded quickly. Alex put her head back on the pillow and stared up at the ceiling. Rogue didn't ask her any more questions and she laid there quietly not really thinking about anything. She heard the door to the room side open and saw the big, blue furry doctor and another woman enter. The woman was absolutely beautiful. She had chocolate colored skin, white hair and crystal blue eyes. There was a regal quality to her appearance and the way she carried herself.
"Seems like our mysterious patient is awake and a little more sedate this time," Beast said. "Seems like the sedative we administered had very little effect. I am Dr. Henry McCoy, also known as Beast. This is Ororo Monroe, aka Storm," he said pointing to the regal woman. "She is the one who found you unconscious in Central Park."
"Thank you ma'am," Alex said in the direction of Storm. "My name is Alex." Alex had the impression that Storm was the one who was in charge. Perhaps it was the way she carried herself or perhaps it was the way the others seem to defer to her.
"How are you feeling Alex," Beast asked looking at the monitors near her bed.
"Fine, but a little weak. I usually am weak for awhile after I heal sir."
"Can you tell us what happened to you Alex?" Storm asked. "What caused you to be injured?"
"Yes ma'am. Another squad was hoping to knock us out of the top spot and ambushed us in Central Park. It was supposed to be a day off for us," Alex said trying to sit up a little straighter. "Once they attacked we had to defend ourselves. The four of us held out for a bit against the eight of them, but eventually we began to tire. I remember a tree exploding and getting hit with pieces of flying wood. I saw a bright flash behind me, someone collided into me and the next thing I remember is waking up here."
"Squads?"
"Yes ma'am. Every combat mutant is in a squad. Each squad is the ranked against the others. Even the civil mutants are put into squads,"
Alex said with a little hesitation in her voice. She was confused why these mutants weren't in squads or didn't know about them for that matter. Something very strange was going on, but she wasn't sure just what.
"Combat mutants? Civil mutants? Can you explain a little more in depth Alex?"
"Yes ma'am,"
Alex said instinctively. "Every mutant is classified as either combat or civil. Combat mutants are the fighting units. Usually those of us who have powers that can be used as an effective weapon are classified as combat mutants. Civil mutants are the ones who make general improvements in the surrounding environment. They build and maintain federal property. Usually those are mutants whose powers aren't very effective in combat or have no apparent military use. I was first classified as a civil mutant. I enjoyed working in the parks and buildings. But, after my power became fully developed, I was then re-classified as a combat mutant."
"Who classifies you and who is in charge?" Storm asked becoming very interested in the young woman's story. Storm looked at her a little more closely. Alex appeared to be about the same age as Rogue and looked to be in top physical condition. She had raven black hair that was cut to shoulder length. Her eyes were a deep emerald green, almost the same color as Rogue's. She was an attractive woman.
"Well ma'am, the government classifies all mutants depending on powers, and oversees all mutant activities."
"All mutants?"
"Yes ma'am. All mutants are identified at birth, taken into the government program, and when old enough, classified."

Storm was shocked. Mutants identified at birth and then taken from their families. Serving the government from the time they were brought into the world until the time they die, Storm couldn't even begin to understand it. "What country's government do you serve Alex?"
"The United States government, ma'am."

Storm was speechless. She couldn't think of any government agency that had this program.
"Alex, could that flash you saw right before you lost consciousness been some sort of portal or gateway to another dimension?" Beast asked really intrigued by the young woman who was now his patient.
"Yes sir," Alex replied. "My power sometimes does the unexpected."
"What exactly is your power?"
"Well ma'am, the best way to explain it is that I adapt to my surroundings."
"Interesting. The living example of Darwin's theory,"
Beast mumbled loud enough for the others to hear.
"Yes sir. It's hard dealing with a power that you don't know how it might manifest itself," Alex said remembering all those times she had been surprised by her power.
"How has your power manifested itself?" Beast asked.
"Too many ways to keep an accurate count of. Healing, heat and fire generation, cold and ice generation, super strength, limited flight, invisibility, telepathy, electrical generation, some control over the elements, perfect memory, knowledge of battle tactics, accelerated learning, and more. The latest and newest brought me here. Some I might not even be aware of sir."
"Impressive,"
Storm and Beast said in unison.
"How does your body take in the information to adapt?" Beast asked.
"Well sir, my normal senses and an extra awareness of what's going around me. I think the radius is about a few hundred feet in any direction. For instance, I can tell that the female doctor that was down here earlier is heading towards this room," Alex said. About twenty seconds after she had stopped speaking Cecilia walked into the room. Cecilia stopped in her tracks when she realized that everyone in the room was staring at her.
"What? Did I grow a third eye or something?" Cecilia asked unnerved by the fact that she was the center of everyone's attention.
"No Dr. Reyes. Alex here was just giving a little demonstration of her powers."
"Oh. Well that's a relief."
"Well Alex,"
Storm said turning back to face the young woman. "You are welcome to stay here with the X-men for as long as you like. Someone who has been through what you have been should have people she can trust. We will have a room for you and can provide you with whatever you need."
"Thank you ma'am. I appreciate it."
She felt a little better knowing that she wouldn't be stuck in some strange world alone.
"You should try to get some sleep Alex," Beast said seeing the exhaustion on her face.
"Yes sir. I'll try," she replied with a yawn. "I don't think it will be that difficult. May I leave the lab? Labs make me very uncomfortable."
"I don't see why not. You seem to be healed, however, I will tell you to take it easy in the next couple of days."
"Rogue will help you find some clothes until you are able to purchase some and she will show you to your room. Rogue, I believe there's an empty room next to yours?"
"Yes."
"When you are done Beast and I would like to talk to you."
"Yes Storm."
"Ah'm assuming that it's okay for me to leave here?"
Rogue asked looking directly at Beast.
"Yes Rogue, but please take it easy."
Rogue quickly hopped out of the bed, grabbed her uniform and dashed to the bathroom to change.
"I don't think I've ever seen someone move that fast to get out of here," Beast said.
"Must be your bedside manner," Cecilia said with a slight smile. Beast gave her an injured look and then it turned into a wide grin.
Storm, Beast and Cecilia had left by the time Rogue got out of the bathroom. "Well let's get out of here. This place gives me the willies," Rogue said offering a gloved hand to Alex.
"Me too," Alex said taking the offered hand and hopped out of the bed.
"First we'll get ya some clothes. Ah don't think ya want to be running around in that hospital gown."
"Lead the way."

Rogue led Alex down a rather long hallway to a pair of shiny, metal doors. Rogue pushed the small button next to the doors. Seconds later the doors opened and the two women stepped into the elevator. Rogue pushed the button marked with a 2. The elevator began to move and a minute later they stepped out of the elevator onto the second floor. A long hallway lined with five doors on each side extended out in both directions from the elevator.
"This is where all the rooms are. This wing is the women's wing and on the right side is the men's wing," Rogue said as she started to lead Alex down the left hallway. "First room after the elevator is the women's showers. The men's showers are in the same corresponding place in their wing. If they walk into the showers and say they've accidently walked into the wrong room, don't believe them. They've had three 'accidents' so far this week and it's only Tuesday."
Alex chuckled quietly and followed her guide down the hall.
"The first room after the showers is Betsy's. Across from her is Jean's room, even though Jean now lives in the boathouse with Scott. Betsy spends a lot of time at Warren's penthouse, but does occasionally stay here. Next to Betsy's room is Cecilia's room and across from her is Jubilee's room. She is now with Gen X, but we still keep a room open for her for when she visits," Rogue said as she walked past each door.
"Next is an empty room, which will now belong to you. After your room comes mah room. The rest of the rooms are empty guest rooms. The entire third floor is nothing but empty rooms. The mansion is pretty big, although it gets a little cramped when other teams come to visit. Storm has the attic. That's up the steps at the end of the hall. Marrow stays in the tunnels under the mansion." Rogue walked back to her room and opened the door. "Ah'll lend ya some clothes 'til we can get Bobby to take us shopping."
Alex watched Rogue open a large closet and start digging through it. A pair of jeans came flying at Alex. She caught them and then proceeded to watch Rogue dig through a dresser. A T-shirt was the next thing that came flying at Alex.
"These should do ya for now. Oh wait, ah forgot underclothes!" Rogue pulled open another drawer and started digging through it. She tossed a lace bra and a pair of lace underwear at Alex. A pair of socks soon came flying in Alex's direction. "That should about do it," Rogue said looking quite pleased with herself.
"Thank you ma'am."
"It's Rogue, and you're welcome. Go get changed and ah'll show ya the rest of the place after Ah'm done talkin' to Storm and Beast."
"Yes, ma'am."

Rogue found Storm and Beast in the kitchen. They were working on setting the table for dinner, but nothing was being cooked. <Must be Hank's turn to cook dinner> Rogue thought to herself. After getting many complaints about his lack of cooking skills, Beast resigned to getting something delivered when it was his turn to make dinner.
Rogue took one look around and asked, "What is it tonight, pizza?"
"Actually Rogue, I've ordered a wide selection of Indian food tonight,"
Beast said as he laid a plate on the table.
"Ah think ah would've preferred the pizza," Rogue said with a grimace.
"You wound me to the soul my dear southern belle," Beast said feigning a hurt look.
"What did ya want to talk to me about Storm?"
"Rogue you better sit down for this,"
Storm said pulling out a chair and motioning for Rogue to sit.
"Is it that bad?"
"Depends on how you look at it. Beast has found the reason why you blacked out today."
"Is it serious?"
"Rogue you're pregnant,"
Storm said coming right to the point.
"What! Pregnant? Ah can't be pregnant! Ah've only spent one night with Gam…" she slowly trailed off.
"Yes you are and it only took one time. The question we have to answer now is what are we going to do about it? First, you won't be able to be on active duty until a time after the baby is born. Second what about the baby's father? Are we going to find him and tell him that he is going to be a father?"
"Ah'll take care of it Storm,"
Rogue said quietly.
"Surely, Rogue, Gambit should be found and told of his impending fatherhood."
"Ah said ah'll take care of it and it's m'ah business,"
Rogue said in a much louder voice.
"Whatever you wish Rogue, but for this child's sake I hope you do decide to find Gambit and tell him."
"I'm not eating dinner tonight. Ah need some time to think about all this,"
Rogue said getting up and running to the door. Storm and Beast watched her go. Storm sighed heavily and walked in the direction that Rogue just ran.

Alex was checking out her new room when she heard Rogue's door slam shut. A few moments later she heard crying coming from the room. She walked out and knocked on Rogue's door.
"Go away Storm, ah don't want to talk about it."
"It's Alex. Rogue what's wrong? Why are you so upset?"
She tried the handle and found it was locked.
"Alex ah just want to be alone right now," Rogue said between sobs.
"Rogue please. You're upset. Let me come in and talk to you."
"Ah said ah want to be alone."

Alex sighed and closed her eyes for a second. She concentrated for a few minutes and then took a step towards the door. Her foot went through the door as she hoped it would do. Alex walked through the door and found Rogue sitting on the bed clutching a pillow crying.
"How'd ya do…" Rogue started to say before Alex cut her off.
"I adapt, remember?" Alex said as she sat down on the bed next to Rogue. "What has you so upset Rogue?"
"I can't. I just can't," Rogue said as she buried her head on Alex's shoulder.
"Can't what Rogue?"
"Remy. Oh God Remy,"
Rogue babbled between sobs.
"Remy what, Rogue?"
"Remy's child. Oh god Remy,"
Rogue said half talking to Alex and this Remy person.
"Rogue are you carrying Remy's child? Is that what you're trying to say?"
Rogue nodded her head and a new round of tears and sobs started.
"Rogue you're going to be okay," Alex said as she heard a knock on the door.
"Rogue, let me in and we'll talk."
"Storm, I'll take care of her. I'm in here with her,"
Alex called out.
"Alex?"
"Yes Storm."
"Okay. Please see me later after Rogue has calmed down."
"Yes ma'am."

Alex held the crying Rogue for a few minutes until she heard Rogue's crying had abated. Alex handed Rogue a tissue from the box on the nightstand. Rogue took it and sat up straight. Rogue blew her runny nose. Alex reached up and pushed back a stray lock of Rogue's hair that had fallen in front of her face. Alex's bare hand brushed Rogue's skin and Alex felt a slight tingling sensation in her fingers.
"You…you…you touched me and nothing happened!" Rogue said in amazement.
"Was something supposed to happen?"
"Ah can't touch anyone. No skin to skin contact or ah suck the person's memories up and their mutant powers. If ah stay in contact too long they go into a coma."

"Is that your power?" Alex said now understanding why Rogue was so surprised at Alex's touch.
"Yes," Rogue said with a large sigh. "Can we try again?" Rogue said taking off one of the gloves she wore.
"Sure." Alex first touched Rogue with a fingertip and when nothing happened, she grabbed Rogue's hand and held it.
"Ah can't believe it! Finally someone ah can touch and not absorb them. This has been the best and worst day of mah life."
Alex wasn't even going to ask her how she got to be pregnant. This was not the right time for that. "My power must be shorting yours out somehow. That's the only explanation I can think of."
Rogue nodded, but was intent on staring at the hand that held hers.
"Rogue, tell me about Remy and why this pregnancy has you so upset," Alex said hoping that Rogue was happy enough about the contact to talk to her about Remy and what had happened.
"Well Gambit, that's Remy, and I have been dating for quite awhile…"

Two hours later Alex stepped out of Rogue's room. Rogue finished her story and then fell asleep. Alex was exhausted and starving. The only problem was she had no clue how to get down to the kitchen. She let out a big yawn and decided to skip the food and get some sleep. She walked into her room, shut the door and lay down on the bed. She didn't bother to undress or pull back the covers because the lure of sleep was too great to ignore. Alex knew she should go talk to Storm, but within seconds she was asleep.

Storm stopped by Alex's room to see if she was done talking to Rogue. Storm knocked on the door and when there was no answer she opened the door a crack. Alex was sprawled out on the bed and fast asleep. Storm decided to let her sleep and quietly shut the door. She went to Rogue's door and knocked quietly and there wasn't answer either. When Storm opened Rogue's door, she found Rogue buried under the covers asleep. Storm shut the door and went to her room in the attic. The room was bathed in silvery light from the full moon coming in through the skylight. Storm was tired. It was a long day and tomorrow would be even longer. Storm quickly changed into her nightclothes and was soon asleep.

    * * *

Rogue woke up to sunlight streaming in the window. She yawned and then stretched her whole body. She looked at the clock on the nightstand. The clock read 12:00. <Noon. Ah must have been really tired to sleep that long> Rogue thought as she sat up in bed. She yawned again and then hopped out of bed. She quickly threw on some clothes and went next door to see if Alex was in her room.
Alex was still asleep when Rogue walked into the room. Rogue shook Alex in an attempt to wake her up. There was no response. Rogue shook Alex again. Alex stirred a little.
"Alex sugah, it's past noon," Rogue said.
"Huh?" Alex asked looking at Rogue with a confused look on her face.
"Time to get up."
"Yes ma'am,"
Alex said after stretching. She sat up and looked around. "Food. I really need some food."
"Sure. We'll get Bobby to take us shopping and we can grab some food at the mall."
"I need something to hold me until we get there. I have a really high metabolism and it's even higher after healing,"
Alex said as her stomach grumbled to emphasize the point.
"Come on. We can go raid the fridge for leftovers," Rogue said grabbing Alex's hand and pulling her up off the bed. Alex stood up and nearly fell right over on her face.
"Alex! You okay?" Rogue exclaimed grabbing the other woman so she wouldn't fall.
"Yes ma'am. Just a little weak."
"Lean on me and we'll make our way down to the kitchen."

They slowly made their way down to the kitchen. Alex sat at the table while Rogue looked in the fridge for leftovers. Rogue found a bowl with what looked like chicken in a red sauce. <Probably leftover Indian food> Rogue thought. She handed the bowl to Alex. Alex opened the bowl and dipped a finger in.
"Chicken Tikka Masala. This will be fine," she said licking the sauce from her finger.
"You eat this stuff?" Rogue asked taking the bowl from Alex.
"Yes ma'am. It's actually pretty good."
"Whatever you say sugah,"
Rogue said as she put the bowl in the microwave and set the timer. They were sitting at the table talking when Bobby and Maggot walked in.
"Hey there you two are. We were wondering when you two sleepyheads would get up," Bobby said pulling up a chair.
"Funny Bobby. Maggot this is Alex. Alex this is Maggot."
"Nice to meet you Alex."
"Nice to meet you,"
Alex said before she began to eat the food Rogue had sat down in front of her.
"Bobby, can you take us shopping today?" Rogue asked.
"Um sure, but…"
"Robert Drake you owe me one shopping trip and ah plan on going today," Rogue cut in before he had time to finish his sentence.
"Anything for you Rogue," Bobby said quietly not wanting to get into an argument with Rogue.
"Mind if we tag along," Maggot said petting Eanie and Meanie.
"Not at all. The more the merrier," Rogue said with a triumphant smile.
"I'm ready," Alex said.
"Did you chew anything?" Rogue asked, amazed at the speed at which Alex ate the Chicken Tikka Masala.
"I'm really hungry."
"Ah guess so," Rogue said clearing the table. "We should be ready to go."
"I just have to take care of one thing first," Bobby said as he started to stand up.
"It won't take too long, will it?" Alex asked wiping her face and hands with a napkin. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to impose. It's just that I'm still really hungry and would like to eat again soon."
"We can leave now. What I need to do can wait until we get back."
"Thank you."
"Well then let's go,"
Rogue said grabbing the keys to the van.
Bobby gulped when he saw Rogue grab the keys. "Um sure. Maggot, you can have the honor of riding shotgun. I don't want to see where we're going."
"No way. I rode shotgun last time. It's your turn Bobby."
Bobby groaned.
They all piled into the school van and headed towards the closest mall. Bobby was amazed. Rogue was driving like a sane person. Usually when Rogue drove, all the passengers were hanging on for dear life. There was a lot to be said about the driving of an invincible person.
"What do y'all want to eat for lunch?"
"Anything,"
replied Alex. "And a lot of it."
"Hrm, with an appetite like that, maybe we should consider a buffet,"
Bobby said from the front passenger seat.
"How about Dragon Garden? Eanie and Meanie like the food there."
"Sounds like a plan,"
Rogue said making a sudden right turn.
"Rogue must you?" Bobby said grabbing on to the seat.
Rogue cast him a quick glance and turned her eyes back to the road.

They all sat back in their chairs and gave a collective sigh. They were all stuffed. Well, all except for Alex. They all watched her start on her fifth plate of food. Bobby couldn't believe how much she could eat. Beast was the mansion's top eater, but Alex had him beat by a mile. Beast's record at the buffet was four plates. Alex was on number five and didn't show any signs of stopping.
"Hey Rogue. We should bring Alex and Beast here and see who can eat the most."
"Ah think Alex would beat him. Ah've never seen anyone eat so much."
"I'm sorry. If you all want to go we can go. I should be fine for about two hours,"
Alex said in between forkfuls of fried rice.
"All that would only last two hours?" Maggot asked in astonishment.
"Normally all this would last me about six hours. But, I had a lot of healing to do and it takes a lot of food to replace the energy I burned doing it. You should see how much I eat after a really hard battle or training exercise. This would be an appetizer," Alex said finishing off the rest of her food. "Okay. Let's go."
"Are you sure. We can wait until you've had enough to eat," Bobby said handing her a fortune cookie.
"Yes I am sure. Let's go."

They arrived at the mall a few minutes later. It took sometime to find a parking place as it always does on a Saturday afternoon. They split up once they got inside since everyone wanted to go to a different store. Rogue and Alex headed off in the direction of some of the more popular clothing stores, Bobby headed off in the general direction of Electronics Boutique and Maggot wandered aimlessly since he had no real shopping agenda.
"Let's start with the basics. We'll hit Victoria's Secret for undies and stuff, then the Gap, and the some shoe stores," Rogue said as she led Alex in the general direction of Victoria's Secret.
"Anything you say."

Rogue and Alex split up once they were inside Victoria's Secret. Each made a few selections and eventually met in front of the checkout counter.
"Alex. You couldn't find something nicer than a few pairs of cotton undies and bras?"
"These will serve the purpose better than the ones that you have,"
Alex said eyeing the satin and lace items that Rogue held.
"To each her own Ah guess."
Rogue paid for the purchases and then they headed towards the Gap. As in Victoria's Secret, Alex had selected items that were simple in design and fabric. Rogue surmised that Alex's military background not only influenced her manner but her tastes as well.
"When we get back we'll conjure up a uniform for you. The Shi'ar machines that we have can produce just about anything. We really didn't have to make this trip, but Ah can't pass up an opportunity to go shopping," Rogue said as they headed toward a shoe store. They each purchased a few pairs of shoes and then set off looking for Bobby and Maggot. They found Bobby in Electronics Boutique looking at computer games. He was a computer game addict along with Sam and Scott, much to Jean's dismay. The three of them have pulled a few all-nighters because they got so wrapped up in a game. Scott has gotten himself in hot water with Jean quite a few times because of the games. Computer games were Scott's Achilles heal. Bobby had two games in his hand and was looking at a third when they walked in.
"Rogue. I'm glad you're here. I can't decide which two to get."
"Why not get all three?"
"Because I only have enough for two, but I want all three,"
he said looking from one box to another.
"Ah'll lend ya the cash if ya want. Jean's not going to be too happy with you."
"Thanks Rogue,"
Bobby said with a grin anticipating the long nights of playing computer games that lie ahead. "Just wait until Scott and Sam get a look at these."
Maggot found them as they were leaving Electronics Boutique.
"Everyone ready to go?" Rogue asked looking at her teammates.
"Yup"
"Yes"
"Yes ma'am"

They all piled back into the van. Alex ended up riding shotgun after Bobby and Maggot had to convince her that it was safe. They drove back to the mansion listening to Bobby go on and on about the new games that he bought. Bobby bolted from the van as soon as it came to a stop outside of the mansion, opening his games as he ran. Rogue, Maggot and Alex stepped inside the front door to find Scott, Jean and Logan standing there. Apparently they were waiting for them to return from shopping.
"Hello Rogue, Maggot and you must be Alex," Scott said extending a hand to the newest resident. "My name is Scott Summers. This is Jean, my wife and standing next to her is Logan."
"Yes sir I am. Pleased to meet all of you," Alex said as she formally shook each person's hand.
Jean looked at the young woman standing in front of her. Jean sensed a stiff formal air about the woman and a manner that reminded her of Scott. Jean had a feeling that this young woman and her husband will get along great. According to Beast, Alex had been in some military organization and was used to obeying orders. At the same time, she was also a squad leader who was used to giving orders and having them obeyed. That might add more tension to the team. This new addition to the X-men should make things around the place quite interesting. Jean's curiosity was piqued and she sent out a light mental probe towards the young woman.
"ARGH!" Jean cried in surprise from the backlash of mental energy that came from Alex. Streaks of pain laced through Jean's brain and she quickly stopped the probe. The backlash ceased, but the pain still raced through her head.
"What did you do to my wife!" Scott demanded as he caught Jean as she staggered back from the blow.
"Nothing sir!"
Logan unsheathed his claws and growled menacingly at Alex. "If you hurt Jeannie I will rip you to shreds!"
Alex took one look at the man named Logan and crouched into a fighting stance. She felt her body adapting to this new threat. Her skin felt like it was becoming harder and her fingers elongated into claws. She could almost feel a feral quality coming over her.
"Try your best," came out in a half growl before she realized it.
"Stop both of you!" Jean shouted. "It's not her fault! It's just her reaction to my probe." Jean really hoped Logan and Alex would not get into a fight. Jean knew Logan and his fighting abilities, but she wasn't sure about Alex and didn't want to see the young woman get hurt.
Alex stopped short at the sound of an order. She felt her body return to a normal state and she returned to a normal stance. Logan slowly re-sheathed his claws, but kept a wary eye on the young woman.
"Sorry ma'am. I hope that you were not injured."
"I will be fine. Perhaps I will have a headache for awhile, but no harm done."

Alex walked up to Jean and looked her straight in the eye. In a move that surprised Jean, Alex took Jean's head in both her hands and instantly the pain was gone from Jean's head. Jean's eyes widened in astonishment when she realized what this young woman standing in front of her had just done.
"Your pain should be gone, yes?"
"Yes thank you."
"Please don't try that again. I can't predict how I will react to things,"
Alex said removing her hands from Jean's head and took a step back.
"I'm sorry. I was just curious about you," Jean said ashamed that she had been caught trying to probe someone's mind without permission.
"Apology accepted."
"Now will excuse us Alex we need to talk to Rogue in private."
"Scott Ah'm not going to sit an listen to you lecture me about how irresponsible getting pregnant was. Ah'm going to keep this baby. Ah'm going to raise it and what ah do about Gambit is mah business. Now Ah'm going up to mah room to put away mah clothes and ah don't want to hear another word about this unless Ah want to talk about it."
Rogue walked past a speechless Scott, Jean and a grinning Logan.
"Guess she told you Slim."
Scott turned to look at Logan for a few seconds and then turned to his wife.
"Are you coming Jean?"
"Actually I'll be home in a bit. I want to talk Alex and there are a few things I need to do up here."
"Okay Jean. Don't be long."
Scott knew his wife was going to go talk to Rogue, but Scott didn't want to get into an argument with his wife about Rogue's pregnancy.
"Alex, let's go put your clothes away and we can see what else you might need," Jean said as she touched Alex's arm and started towards the stairs.
"Yes ma'am"
"Alex I want to talk to you after dinner tonight. 9pm sharp in the Professor's office."
"Yes sir."

Logan watched the two women walk up the stairs. There was something interesting and stimulating about the young woman. In a way, she reminded Logan of himself when he was younger. Logan had a feeling there was a layer of steel beneath that soft-looking exterior, perhaps strong enough to match him. None of the X-men were so willing to go toe to toe with him and here was a young woman who he barely knew ready to give him a run for his money. He did notice one peculiar thing when they were about to fight. Her scent changed when she was ready to fight him. Not the normal aggressive scent of a human, but almost a wild animal scent. He knew he would have to keep a close eye on this young woman. Perhaps this will be interesting, provided she didn't have a huge stick up her butt like Scott did. There was a time and place for formal behavior, just not all the time as it was the case with Scott. He chuckled and went outside to have a cigar, after all one doesn't smoke around pregnant women and babies.

    * * *

Scott and Jean met that night with Alex. Scott was trying to get a better picture of exactly who Alex was and where she came from. Scott had a hard time believing some of the stuff that Alex was telling him. Scott questioned the fact that Alex was in command of units at such at young age.
"So you had seven other people in your squad?"
"Yes sir."
"You were their leader at such a young age?"
"Yes sir. My first command was at 16 and I'm 25 now."
"Why do I find that hard to believe?"
Scott looked at his wife.
"Scott you know I can verify what she is saying."
"Jean I will not have you get hurt again by this woman. We've already discussed this."
"Sir there is a way."

Jean and Scott both looked questioningly at the young woman.
"I can let Jean go through my mind. She got hurt earlier because I wasn't expecting the probe. If I know something is going to happen I can temporarily shut off my powers so that I won't react."
"Scott please let me try. It's the only way that you are going to accept what she is saying."
"Jean I just don't want to see you get hurt."

Jean laid a reassuring hand on her husband's shoulder and walked over to stand in front of the young woman.
"Is there any special way we need to do this Alex?"
"Just start with a very light touch. After I've accepted that then you can delve into my mind. I will warn you. You may not like what you see."

Jean sent her thought out to the young woman. At first it seemed as if there was a wall erected between her and Alex's mind. After a second it dissolved and Jean continued to enter Alex's mind. Jean was horrified at some of the images she saw. She couldn't believe that a person as young as Alex could have experienced so much. Alex was far more dangerous than she and Scott had originally guessed. Jean didn't want to stay in Alex's mind any more than she had to. She broke the connection and stared at Alex in disbelief.
"Well Jean?"
"Scott. She is telling the truth,"
Jean said not taking her eyes off the young woman. Scott looked at his at wife and wondered what could she have seen that would make her upset.
"Okay then. As of tomorrow you are an active member of the X-men. We have a danger room session scheduled for 7am. You may go."
"Thank you sir,"
Alex said and then she left the room.
Jean let out the breath that she didn't realize she was holding. She buried her face on her husband's chest and then started to sob.
"Jean?"
"Oh Scott. I can't imagine going though some of the things that she has gone
through. Her mind was filled with images of battles and dead bodies. It was absolutely horrible."
"Will she be able to handle it?"
"She has amazing mental discipline for someone who isn't a telepath. She will be all right. I just can't see how she can deal with it. I couldn't deal with it if I were her."

Scott didn't say anything. Instead, he just stood there with his arms around his wife.

Alex was on her way back to her room when she ran into Bobby at the bottom of the stairs.
"Hey Alex. Where are you heading?"
"To my room."
"Why don't you join the rest of us in the rec room?"
"Sure why not."

Bobby led them to the rec room and when they entered Alex noticed that there were a few new people in the room. Rogue and Storm were not in the room, but Beast, Cecilia, Maggot, and Logan were. She nodded to each of them and they returned the nod. Bobby led her over to where a couple stood.
"Alex, this is Warren Worthington III and Betsy Braddock. This is Alex, the newest member of the X-men."
"Pleased to meet you Alex,"
Warren and Betsy said to the newcomer.
"Pleased to meet both of you."
The man introduced as Warren had blond hair, blue eyes, blue skin and wings. He seemed to be in good physical condition. Betsy was nearly as tall as Warren with a lithe body, purple hair and a red tattoo on her face.
"And why do we have the honor of your presence tonight?" Bobby asked.
"Well we would have to get up entirely too early to make one of Scott's infamous early morning danger room sessions if we stayed at Warren's. So, we figured we would crash here tonight," Betsy replied. "I swear that man schedules them early to inconvenience everyone."
"Well I better introduce Alex to Bish or he'll have a cow knowing that someone is staying in the mansion that he hasn't checked out."

Alex and Bobby made their way over to where Bishop was sitting. Bishop had a scowl on his face and it grew as Alex and Bobby approached.
"Bishop, this is Alex. Alex, this is Bishop. Don't worry. He doesn't always have a stick up his butt." Bishop stood up.
"Pleased to meet you," Alex said offering a hand to Bishop.
Bishop looked at the hand and was deciding if he should take it or not.
"Lighten up Bish. You can't spend ALL of your life being uptight and paranoid," Bobby said elbowing the big man.
Bishop took the hand and nodded slightly at Alex. Alex sized up the big X-man. Everything about him said soldier to her. He would make a good opponent. Bobby took her hand and led her to the other side of the room where a blond haired, blue-eyed teenager was sitting.
"This is Sam. Hayseed, this is Alex," Bobby said as Sam sprang to his feet.
"Nice to meet you ma'am," Sam said extending his hand.
"Likewise Sam," Alex said shaking his hand.
"Hey Bobby, do you think I might get to burn a copy of the new games you got?"
"Sure Hayseed. Just stop by my room and pick them up."
"Thanks Popsicle."
"Well that's everyone. Would you like to sit and watch some tv?"
Bobby asked Alex gesturing to a space on one of the couches.
"No thanks. I don't watch tv."
Bobby gasped at the thought.
"I think I would like to go for a walk."
"Sure. We can walk down to the lake."
"Bobby, if you don't mind I would like to go alone. I'm starting to overload from being around a new group of mutants. It takes me awhile to adjust and until I do I need some periods of time alone. Please understand."

Bobby nodded and then led her to the back door.
"There's a well worn path that you can follow. Take my com badge incase you get lost," he said taking the badge off and handing it to her.
"Thanks."
Bobby watched her as she disappeared into the blackness of the night. He sighed dreamily.
"Got the hots for the new girl?" said a voice from behind him.
"Huh? Oh no of course not," Bobby said as he turned to face Logan. "I mean…well she is very attractive and all."
Logan just nodded and walked out into the night following Alex.

Alex eventually made her way down to the lakeshore and sat down on a rock. She just sat there quietly enjoying the beautiful night. The full moon bathed the night in a silvery light and a slight breeze rustled the leaves in the trees. The crickets filled the night with their song and the sound of frogs croaking came from the edges of the lake. She caught the faint scent of Logan carried on the breeze. She could lose him in two seconds if she wanted, but she really didn't care that he was there. She just wanted some time to regroup her thoughts and give her system a break from all the new input it was getting from the mutants. She sat there for the better part of an hour in meditation. She noticed that Logan was still back there somewhere. <He's persistent. I'll give him that> she thought.
Logan. Why don't you come down and join me? She sent the thought out in the general direction where she thought Logan was.
"Pretty impressive kid," he said after walking out of the woods a few minutes later. Alex patted the ground next to her inviting Logan to sit. He sat down and lit up a cigar. Neither one said a word. They sat in silence listening to the rhythms of the night for about an hour before the silence between them was broken.
"I guess I should go back up to the mansion. We have an early session tomorrow," Alex said starting to get up. Logan nodded and he too rose to his feet. They walked back to the mansion in silence and only nodded to each other when they stepped off the elevator. Alex hit her pillow and was asleep in two seconds.

        * * *

"Wake up sugah. We have to get ya a uniform if you want to take part in the session this morning," Rogue said as she shook Alex awake.
"Yes ma'm," Alex grumbled quietly as she started to get out of bed.
Rogue led her down into the lower levels of the mansion where they kept most of the Shi'ar technology. They passed the medlab, which reminded Alex that Beast wanted to do some exams and tests on her later today. Just the thought of exams and tests gave her the shivers. She hated having that stuff done. Rogue stopped before a door that had a palm reader on it. Rogue took off one of her gloves and put her hand on the reader. After a few seconds the lock came open with a click. Rogue opened the door and led her inside.
"Hrm let's see here. How about something like this," Rogue said as she showed Alex the picture of a uniform on the monitor.
"Perhaps something in the same style, just not bright yellow?"
"How about gray?"
"Perfect. Can you add stuff to that?"
"Shur can sugah. What do ya have in mind?"
"Pockets. Here, here, here and here,"
She said pointing to the locations where she wanted the pockets.
"How big do you want the pockets?"
"Big enough to fit about two candy bars each," Alex said with a grin.
"You're kidding. Why do you need pockets for candybars?"
"I need them because of my high metabolism. Which reminds me. Do we have any in the mansion? I may need them for the session later."
"We can raid Beast's cabinets in the Medlab. He hides them in there for when he pulls all-nighters."
"How about this?"
Rogue asked as she showed Alex the final draft of the uniform.
"Perfect."
"Now ya have to go stand over there so the machine can get your measurements. Want boots too?"
"Yes. Black, mid-calf with a one inch solid base heel."

Alex stood still for the minute that it took the machine to read her measurements. Five minutes later the uniform was ready and Alex changed right there in front of Rogue. Rogue noticed that Alex's body was covered with scars. She didn't say anything because she didn't want to embarrass the young woman who was becoming her friend.
"How's it look?"
"Looks fine sugah. Now let's go see if we can find those candybars,"
Rogue said with a wink and a giggle.

Rogue sat in the control room high above the danger room. She wasn't going to miss this session, even if she couldn't participate. Scott had given her the responsibility of making sure no one got seriously hurt. He gave her specific directions about what the session should be like and when to stop it if things got out of hand.
"Okay y'all. Here are the rules for this one. There are none. It's every mutant for him or herself. Last one standing wins."
"What do we win?"
Bobby shouted.
"First one out makes dinner tonight and the last one out gets a week free of chores." Scott didn't necessarily say there wasn't supposed to be any prizes, but Rogue thought it was a nice touch.
The group, consisting of Wolverine, Angel, Psylocke, Iceman, Cannonball, Storm, Phoenix, Beast, Bishop and Alex, all looked around at each other. The only three not in on this session besides Rogue were Maggot, Marrow and Cecilia. Strategies were being thought out and plans made. It was a certainty that Jean and Scott would team up, as would Betsy and Warren, but for the rest no one knew for sure. The plain sterile room suddenly became a dense forest and everyone scattered.
Alex let go control of her powers and ran for the nearest tree. She climbed up the tree and hid among the branches. She looked down and noticed her arm was fading. <Invisibility. Just want I needed right now> she thought as she scanned around the forest. She started to move from tree to tree though the branches.
She eventually saw Iceman encased to what seemed to be a fort made entirely of ice. She smiled. She took a leap from the tree and landed quietly as a cat on top of one of the walls of the ice fort. He didn't even look in her direction. She felt her feet getting warmer in response to the ice. <I better make my move quickly before I melt this wall>. She went visible and took a flying leap at him. Her momentum and weight drove Iceman to the floor. She kept his arms pinned to his sides and waited for her body to start generating heat. After a few minutes of rolling around on the floor the warmth her body was generating eventually melted the Iceman back to his human form. She let go of him long enough to deliver a knock out blow to the back of his head. He lay in a heap on the floor.
"That's one down. Making dinner tonight is Iceman," Rogue said as she watched the action below. A collective groan went up from the remaining X-men. The second worst cook in the mansion after Beast was Bobby.
Alex looked around. No one else was within sight. She just realized that she forgot about the people who could fly when a lightning bolt came from above and hit her. She took a step back and was stunned for a second. High above Storm circled and was calling forth another lightning bolt. Alex dove off to the side as another bolt hit the spot that she had just vacated. Electric sparks came from her fingertips and she realized what she needed to do. She jumped straight up, and as she hoped, she was able to fly. She flew straight at Storm and unleashed the electrical energy that she had absorbed from the lightning bolt. Storm was struck and was stopped for a few seconds. A few seconds were all that Alex needed. She plowed into Storm and the two of them fell like a rock toward the floor. Alex maneuvered so that Storm would hit the trees and branches on the way down and that she would hit the floor first. They finally landed on the floor and Storm was unconscious. Alex was a little dazed, but she couldn't afford to deal with it. She stood up and shook it off.
She looked around for another target. None were in sight so she once again went invisible and took to moving through the trees. She spotted Warren and Betsy lying unconscious close to each other. That's two less she had to worry about. She continued through the trees when she saw Beast sitting in a tree watching the action below him. Cyclops and Wolverine were going head to head and not far from them Bishop and Cannonball were going at it. Alex saw Jean standing a small distance away from where Scott and Wolverine were fighting it out and she was somehow standing under the same tree that Beast was sitting in. Jean would be the biggest threat to Alex and that's who she would focus her attention on. Alex closed her eyes and gathered her concentration. She started a strong wave of psychic energy and sent it out in Jean's direction. Jean was intent on watching her husband and Wolverine that she didn't notice Beast drop down from the tree where he was sitting. Beast enveloped her in his arms just as Alex's wave caught the both of them. They both fell to the floor in a heap.
Scott saw his wife and Beast go down. Wolverine took advantage of that distraction and landed a hard punch on Scott's jaw. He staggered back as another blow landed on his jaw from the opposite side. He fell to prone to the floor and a huge grin of satisfaction spread over Wolverine's face.
By this time Bishop had effectively put Sam out of commission. Wolverine and Bishop looked at each other and began to square off. Alex, still invisible, watched from the tree she was sitting in. It only took Wolverine a few minutes to get Bishop to the ground unconscious.
"I know you're out there girl," Wolverine growled looking around for Alex.
"I'm right here. Come and get me," Alex said as she jumped to the ground and became visible.
Wolverine and Alex started to circle each other. Alex's body took the same characteristics as it had yesterday. Her skin felt as hard as steel and her fingers elongated into claws. Wolverine noticed the same animal scent was coming from Alex as it had yesterday. They continued to circle each other and each of them made cautious attacks in an attempt to feel each other out. They were so intent on each other that they didn't notice that Rogue had changed the danger room back to its sterile appearance and the other X-men were starting to come to.
Alex and Wolverine went back and forth. Both switching from the offense to the defense and back so quickly that there wasn't a chance for either one to land a solid blow on their opponent. The other X-men had now joined off to one side to watch them.
"It's like watching a dance," Bobby said as he rubbed the back of his head.
"It's amazing," Jean said leaning on her husband for some support.
"Perhaps Wolverine has finally met his match," Scott said resenting the fact that it was Logan who took him out.
Alex and Wolverine went on for about an hour longer before someone emerged the victor. Both were tiring and starting to get desperate. Both Wolverine and Alex were covered from head to toe with cuts and scrapes and sweat rolled down their faces. Wolverine, in a surprise move, let Alex land a hard blow on his thigh as he made a dive for her. He could feel her claws digging deep into flesh and muscle and even scraping bone. Both crashed to the floor and it ended up with Wolverine sitting on top of Alex with an adamantium claw tip under her chin. She was defeated. He had her arms pinned under his knees and there was no way for her to escape without causing him serious injury, perhaps even killing him.
"Yield?" Wolverine growled.
"Yes," she said quietly and Wolverine rolled off of her and on to the floor. They both lay on their backs on the floor looking at each other.
"Good fight, kid."
"You too old man."
Alex figured she could call him an old man if he could call her a kid. They both grinned at each other and then sprang to their feet. They were both covered with minor cuts and scrapes but nothing serious. Alex pulled a candybar from one of her pockets, unwrapped it and began eating it. The other X-men approached the pair.
"Impressive Alex. You'll make a fine addition to the X-men," Scott said and everyone nodded their agreement.
"Thank you sir."
"Alex I believe we have an appointment in the medlab in an hour."
"Yes sir. I will be there."
"Hank giver her a break. She just went toe to toe with Wolverine for an hour and now you want to prick her with needles."
"Bobby?"
"Yes Hank?"
"Mind your business."

They all left the danger room and headed for the showers. Jean stood outside the shower stall removing her uniform when she happened to notice Alex getting out of her uniform. Alex's body was covered in scars. Some were small while others looked to be quite large. Thankfully, Alex probably wouldn't have any new ones from today's sessions. Jean knew where Alex had acquired these scars but it didn't make her feel any more comfortable looking at them. Alex had noticed someone watching her and turned to see Jean staring at her. Alex knew Jean was staring at her scars.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have stared at you," Jean's face flushed in embarrassment.
"It's okay Jean. I'm not ashamed of my scars. Each one serves as a reminder that I survived whatever it was that gave me that scar."
"Alex. If you ever want to talk about anything, my door is open."
"Thanks Jean. I better get moving if I'm going to make Hank's appointment,"
Alex said as she stepped into the shower and turned on the water.

Ten minutes later Alex was down in the medlab. Beast hadn't arrived yet so Alex passed the time looking around the lab. Files and books were scattered around the two desks that filled the room. Alex noticed a folder labeled "Legacy Virus" and picked it up. She opened the file and began to read the contents. Beast found her reading the file when he entered.
"Anything interesting?"
"Sorry sir. I didn't mean to pry. Just that I got bored waiting."
"It's okay Alex. Why don't you hop up on the table here and we'll get started."
"Yes sir,"
Alex replied as she climbed up to sit on the table.
"How do you feel?"
"Fine sir."
"Any thing lingering from yesterday?"
"No sir. Just a hearty appetite."
"Will that subside?"
"Yes sir."
"May I take some blood samples and tissue samples?"
"Yes sir"
"Do you say anything besides yes sir?"
"Labs make me nervous. I never could feel comfortable in one. This is an interesting case you are working on sir."

"Ah yes. The elusive Legacy Virus. It's been an ongoing project for me for quite some time. One day we hope to beat it. Please roll up your sleeve," Beast said as he began to draw blood and tissue samples. "Let's start with medical history. Age when your powers first materialized."
"6 and ½"
"Parents mutants?"
"Think so."
"Any serious illnesses?"
"None."
"Allergies?"
"None."

"Medical problems?"
"Not even a cold sir."

Beast stared at Alex in disbelief. Everyone has had a cold now and then. "Not in your entire life?"
"Not that I can remember sir."
"Any serious injuries?"
"Too many to count sir."
Beast looked at her questioningly. "Here I'll show you," Alex said as she began to take off her uniform.
"Oh my stars and garters," Beast exclaimed as he looked at the scars that covered Alex's body. "I would say that was a few. You can put your clothes back on."
"Yes sir."
"Alex, with the Shi'ar technology that we have I could remove a majority of those scars for you."
"Really? I mean I'll have to think about it. Those scars remind me who I am and what I have survived."
"We can do it anytime you want. All you need to do is let me know."
"Thank you sir."
"I think we're done here for now. Can you please tell Jean I need to see her? It's time for her annual physical and it's hard to get her up here for one."
"Yes sir."

Alex went looking for Jean and found her sitting in the kitchen talking to Storm and Betsy.
"I need to go shopping soon. All my clothes are starting to feel a little snug," Jean was saying as Alex walked into the room.
"Perhaps we could go after lunch?"
"Sure Storm. Scott's going to be wrapped up in the new games Bobby bought the other day. Looks like I've lost a husband for awhile."
"I might as well tag along. I could always use new clothes."
"Betsy, you have enough clothes for three people."
"And your point is Jean?"
"Excuse me. Jean, Hank wants to see you in the medlab. He said it's time for your annual physical."
"Already? I just had one a year ago,"
Jean said with a smile. Jean put her coffee cup in the sink and headed off to the medlab.
"Betsy, can you help us find Gambit?"
"Sure Storm. May I ask why?"
"Rogue is pregnant with his child."
"What!? Um okay. Where do we start?"
"Well we should try to see if you can work with Cerebro to locate him. We'll see where that leads and go from there."

The two women got up and left the kitchen. Alex poured a cup of coffee and sat down at the table. She sat there enjoying the solitude and her coffee when Logan walked into the room. Their eyes met and something unspoken passed between them. The air around her sparked with raw energy. Alex was the first to lower her eyes and look elsewhere.
"You okay?" Logan asked.
Alex nodded silently. Logan poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down across from her. They sat in silence drinking their coffee, neither looking at the other. The silence was shattered when Bobby walked in.
"What are we all doing today?"
"I have nothing planned. Perhaps you would like to show me around a little more? Rogue didn't give me the whole tour."
"Sure Alex. Bobby Drake is at your disposal,"
Bobby said and added a little bow.
Alex rose and put her cup in the sink and took the arm that Bobby offered. She could feel Logan's eyes on her and she felt a little uncomfortable. Logan watched the two of them leave. What was it about Alex that bothered him? When their eyes met the air around him crackled with raw energy. He gulped down the rest of his coffee and went outside in an attempt to clear his head.

That night Alex sat out at the lake in the same spot as the night before. Clouds obscured the moon and the wind blew quite hard. The air contained the scent of moisture and Alex knew that it would be raining before long. She let out a large sigh, pulled her knees to her chin and wrapped her arms around her knees.
"Something botherin' ya darlin'?" Logan said from behind her.
"No. Maybe. I don't know."
"Want to talk?"
Logan asked sitting down next to her and lighting a cigar.
"Not really."
Logan didn't want to pry so he just sat there quietly smoking his cigar. The rain started to fall an hour later. Logan looked at Alex. She didn't make any move to get up and head back to the mansion. He watched her lay back, close her eyes and let the rain fall on her. Logan didn't mind the rain either so he sat there watching her. She was smiling and enjoying the rain falling on her. After awhile, he had noticed that her breathing had become slow and regular. He couldn't believe it. She was sleeping. He stood up and scooped her up in his arms. The way back to the mansion wasn't easy. The rain was coming down quite hard and the path was muddy and slippery. He eventually arrived at the backdoor and quietly opened it. The interior of the mansion was dark, as most of the inhabitants had made their way to bed. He quietly made his way through the dark building until he arrived at Alex's room. He pulled back the covers and gently laid her on the bed. He realized that she couldn't sleep in wet clothes all night. He sighed and carefully began to remove her wet clothes. He took a second to admire the view. He saw the scars and winced. One so young shouldn't have so many scars. He lightly traced a few of the larger ones and could imagine what could cause such large deep scars.
"Good night," he whispered and turned off the light. He quietly shut the door on his way out.
