Alex looked at Jubilee. "So where do you want to go next?"
"I don't know."
Alex looked around. Jubilee and she stood in the middle of Faneuil Hall. Alex had
convinced Sean that the kids needed a day off. Actually Alex needed a day off, but Sean
didn't have to know about that. It had been a grueling two weeks for Alex and for the
students. Finals were approaching and everyone was working twice as hard in an effort to
get ready for them. Alex was waiting for Jubilee to make up her mind about where she
wanted to go next. "Well?"
"How about we grab something to eat while I make up my mind?"
"Sounds fine to me. These two can be very demanding when it comes to food," Alex
said laying a hand on her rather large stomach.
"Let's go!" Jubilee said starting out in the direction of the food
court.
Alex started to follow her when she stopped suddenly. A wave of dizziness swept over her.
She took a deep breath in and hoped the dizziness would pass. It didn't. It got worse and
Alex knew she was going to pass out. "Jubilee!" she managed to yell before
blackness descended down on her.
Jubilee turned when she heard her name called and froze. She saw Alex collapse to the
floor. A second later she was running to Alex's side. She dropped to the floor at Alex's
head and cradled Alex's head in her lap. "Alex! Alex please wake up!"
There was no response.
"SEAN!" Jubilee screamed into her COM badge.
"Go ahead lass."
"Sean, Alex collapsed and is unconscious."
"Where are ye?"
"Near the food court. Hurry Sean I can't wake her!"
"We're on our way."
Jubilee sat there holding Alex's head and trying in vain to wake her. A few minutes later
she saw Sean and Emma running toward her followed by some of the other members of Gen-X.
Not far behind them Jubilee saw EMS personnel running. "Hold on Alex. Help is
coming."
Sean and Emma knelt beside the unconscious woman. A few moments later the EMS personnel
were there and began to work on Alex.
"What happened?"
"I don't know Emma. We were heading to the food court for some food. I was walking a
few steps ahead of her and I heard her yell my name. I turned around and she fell to the
floor. Is she going to be okay?"
"I hope so." Emma tried to contact Alex telepathically, but there was no
response from the woman.
"What about the babies?"
"They should be all right Jubilee. I don't think her fall was that hard. They'll know
better when they get her to the hospital."
Jubilee just nodded at Emma.
"I'll go with her. Emma you and the students can follow. Where are ye takin'
her?" Sean asked the closest paramedic.
"Brigham and Women's Hospital."
Emma nodded. They watched the EMS people place Alex on a stretcher and start to wheel her
through the building to where the ambulance waited. Sean went along with them and Emma
started to round up the students.
Jubilee took off running.
"Jubilee! Where are you going?" Emma called after her.
"Someone's got to tell Wolvie!" she yelled back and kept running.
Jubilee skidded to a halt in front of a payphone. She quickly dialed the number for the
mansion and punched in the numbers for her calling card.
One ring. Two rings. Three rings.
"Someone pick up!"
Four rings. On the fifth ring she heard someone pick up.
"Xavier's Ins
"
"Storm. It's me Jubilee. Is Logan there?"
"I'm sorry Jubilee he is out on a mission."
"Ugh! Listen. We need to get in contact with him ASAP. Alex collapsed at Fanueil Hall
and has been taken to the hospital."
"What's wrong?"
"We don't know yet. I'm still at Faneuil Hall with Emma and everyone else. Sean went
with Alex and the ambulance."
"Are the babies okay?"
"We don't know Storm. We'll find out when she gets to the hospital. We have to get in
touch with Logan!"
"I know Jubilee. I will tell the Professor and we'll get in touch with Logan. What
hospital are they taking her to?"
"Brigham and Women's."
"Thank you Jubilee."
"You're welcome Storm. Bye."
Jubilee hung up the phone and ran back to where Emma and the other students were waiting.
"Did you get in touch with Logan?"
"No Emma. He wasn't there. Storm and the Professor are going to try to get a hold of
him."
"Good. We better make our way to the hospital. Paige can you drive the other
van?"
"Yes Ms. Frost."
They left Faneuil Hall and headed to the hospital to meet up with Sean.
Storm knocked on the door to the Professor's study.
"Come in."
"Professor?"
"Yes Storm," Charles Xavier said barely looking up from the papers he was
reading.
"Sir, Jubilee called. Alex collapsed in Faneuil Hall and they took her to Brigham
and Women's Hospital."
Charles lost all interest in the papers sitting in front of him. "When did this
happen?"
"They were taking her to the hospital when Jubilee called."
"Are the babies okay?"
"They don't know. Jubilee said they would know better when they get her to the
hospital."
"Did she say why Alex collapsed?"
"No."
"Storm can you ready the Raven? We're going to fly up there?" The Raven was
a miniature version of the Blackbird and could only hold four people. They had recently
acquired it and hadn't really used it. The plane didn't have an official name but the
current favorite was Raven, to compliment Blackbird.
"Professor?"
"I have to go up there Storm."
"May I ask why sir? She's going to be taken care of by some of the best doctors. I'm
sure Sean and Emma will call with updates."
"I have to go Storm. She's my daughter."
"What? How is this possible?"
"Well not really. My counterpart in her world was her father. Genetically she is my
daughter."
Storm just nodded. "I will go and ready the Raven."
"Thank you Storm."
Charles went up to his room and threw some clothes into an overnight bag. He had a feeling
that this would take a while. He met Storm and Bobby in the hangar bay. They boarded the
plane without speaking and were soon airborne.
"How is she?" Charles asked Sean as soon as he arrived at the hospital.
"Not good. The doctors say her vitals are weak and getting weaker. They don't
know what's causing it."
"And the babies?"
"The doctors say their fine right now, but if Alex's condition gets any worse they're
going to have to do a C-section."
"Can they survive outside of Alex's body? She's not due until mid-July and it's only
mid-May."
"They say the babies' chances aren't good."
Charles sighed. He searched with his mind until he found the mind he was searching for. *Scott?*
*Yes Professor.*
*I need you to abort your mission and get to Boston as soon as possible.*
*What's wrong?*
*It's Alex. She collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Her vitals are getting weaker
and weaker. The doctors might have to perform an emergency C-section if she gets any
worse. They say the babies don't have a very good chance at surviving.*
*We'll be there as soon as possible. I'll tell Logan.*
*Thank you Scott.*
Scott Summers took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
"Something wrong Cyke?"
"Yes Sam. I'm afraid so. Change course and head toward Boston."
"What's up?"
"Take the controls. I need to go talk to Logan."
Scott walked slowly to the back of the Blackbird. Logan sat talking to Bishop and it
looked like he was in a generally good mood. Scott stopped in front of Logan.
"Excuse me. Logan can I talk to you?"
"Sure Slim. What's up?"
"Can I talk to you in private?"
Logan's eyes narrowed and he eyed Scott suspiciously. Logan eventually nodded and followed
Scott over to the area of the Blackbird where the medical equipment was kept. It wasn't
exactly private, but it was removed from the rest of the members of the team.
Logan just stared at Scott. "What do ya want?"
"Logan it's Alex. The Professor said she collapsed and was taken to the
hospital."
Logan just stood there and stared at Scott. He had an empty feeling in his gut and his
heart leapt up into his throat. Time stopped and the world stopped turning. "What
happened?" barely escaped his lips.
"They don't know. She just collapsed and hasn't regained consciousness since. The
doctors say her vitals are getting weaker and they might have to do an emergency C-section
if they get worse."
"That bad?"
Scott nodded.
"And the babies?"
"Chances aren't good if they do have to do a C-section."
Logan just slowly nodded.
"We'll get there as fast as possible."
"Thanks Scott."
"What's her condition Doctor?" Charles asked the doctor after he had
emerged from Alex's room. Sean and Charles had been waiting outside the door for the
doctor to emerge. The others had retired to the nearest waiting room.
"I can't release that information to anyone but family."
Charles looked at the doctor. "I am family. I'm Charles Xavier, her father."
Sean stared at Charles in amazement.
*I'll explain in a bit.*
Sean nodded very slightly.
"Her vitals are weakening. We can't do anything because we don't know what's causing
it. If it continues we would recommend doing an emergency C-section. It would help having
her medical files."
Charles nodded solemnly. "Her physician is on his way here. I will have him
speak to you when he arrives. Can I go in there?"
The doctor nodded. "I must see to other patients. Please excuse me."
Charles and Sean watched the doctor walk down the hallway. "What was all that
about?"
"Charles Xavier is her father where she comes from. Genetically she is my
daughter."
"I see."
"Can you go wait for Logan to arrive? They should be here shortly."
Sean nodded and headed to the waiting room. Charles entered the room.
Alex was hooked up to a few monitoring machines and a plastic mask was over her mouth and
nose supplying pure oxygen to her.
Charles took a few moments and studied Alex closely. Dark circles were present under her
closed eyes and her face was drawn in. Her arms were nothing but skin and bones and it
reminded Charles of an anorexic person. Alex's pregnancy had taken its toll on her.
Charles sighed. He hoped Logan would arrive soon. Charles didn't want to make decisions
concerning the babies. He moved his hoverchair as close to the bed as he could and took
Alex's hand in his.
An hour later Charles was still in the same location holding Alex's hand. He had tried to
enter her mind to contact her, but was unable to reach her. So he just sat there holding
her hand. A nurse entered the room and wrote down some of the readings that were display
on the various monitors. She looked at Charles for a brief second and then left.
Ten minutes later two doctors entered the room.
"Charles Xavier?"
"Yes," Charles said maneuvering the hoverchair so that he was facing the
doctors.
"Her vitals are declining. If we are going to save the babies that she is
carrying we need to do it now. If she gets any weaker she won't survive the surgery."
Charles nodded solemnly.
"We need you to sign the consent forms," the one doctor said holding
out a clipboard in Charles' direction.
Charles reluctantly took the clipboard and signed the form. He hoped he was making the
right decision.
Logan burst through the doors to the Emergency Room. Jubilee appeared by his side within
two seconds of him walking through the door.
"Wolvie!"
"Hey kiddo. Where's Alex?"
"They just took her into the operating room. They're performing an emergency
C-section. Her vitals keep declining."
"Thanks Irish," Logan said turning to look at Sean, who arrived at Logan's
side a second after Jubilee.
"Charles is in with her. Let's see if we can get you in there as well."
Logan nodded and followed Sean down the hall.
Sean stopped the first available nurse.
"Excuse me."
"Can I help you?"
"This man's um
wife is undergoing an emergency C-section. Is there any chance we
can get him in there?"
Logan almost choked when Sean said that Alex was his wife. Right now Logan would go along
with almost anything that would get him into the operating room.
"Yes. Please follow me," she said looking at Logan.
"Thanks," Logan said looking at Sean and then proceeded to follow the nurse
down the hallway.
She led him to a small room and threw a pair of scrubs at him. He quickly put them on and
followed her out of the room. She motioned to a set of double doors. Logan nodded and
opened a door.
He stepped in the room and stood near the Professor, who was near the back wall.
"Logan. I'm so glad to see you."
"How is she?"
"Not good. Her vitals keep dropping. I'm sorry Logan. I had to give consent to do the
C-section. She wouldn't survive the surgery if we waited any longer."
"I understand Chuck."
They didn't speak another word to each other, but instead watched the events that were
unfolding in the room. They couldn't see exactly what the doctors were doing because they
were on the side of the room as Alex's head and there was a rather large screen that was
erected right above Alex's chest. They could see the doctors moving around and grabbing
various instruments.
Alex had a sort of disconnected feeling from her body. It was like she was dreaming. She
could almost make out what was being said around her, but she couldn't feel her body. She
couldn't even feel the twins moving around, which was surprising since in the last few
days they had been moving almost non-stop. It was the weirdest feeling Alex ever had.
Alex tried to concentrate on what was being said around her. All she could make out were a
few words like C-section. <NO! They can't take my babies! They won't survive!>
she screamed in her mind in that state of nothingness that she was in. <They can't!
Not my helpless babies! It's too early!> Alex had to do something. She couldn't
let them take her babies from her while they still needed to develop. Alex knew of a
possible way to help her tiny babies, but it would probably cost her life. Alex gathered
her will and concentrated. She concentrated on feeling her body and feeling the two tiny
lives inside of it. She eventually felt the two minds.
*Oh my little darlings. Just know one thing, mommy loves you both.* she sent out
to them. Alex gathered her will and let all the life energy she had flow into the two
small bodies.
Charles was trying to contact Alex again. He hadn't given up trying in the two hours that
he had been with her. He heard a soft murmur of something. Alex. He could almost hear what
she was saying.
*
mommy loves you both.*
*NO! Alex whatever you're doing don't do it!*
No response.
"Logan, she's doing something. I don't know what exactly, but it has to do with
the babies."
"What!" he yelled and started to rush over to the table where Alex was
laying.
"No Logan! There's nothing you can do. We have to let things run their course. Alex
wouldn't do anything to endanger the babies."
Logan stood there unsure of what to do. He felt
helpless. For the first time in his
life he felt completely helpless. There was nothing he could do. All his strength, all his
fighting skills, and all the courage in the world couldn't help in this situation.
A few minutes later, one of the doctors held up a small, pink, slimy thing and handed it
to one of the waiting nurses. Two minutes later they held up another small, pink, slimy
thing and handed it to a waiting nurse. The nurses took the small infants over to a corner
of the room.
"You the father?" a nurse asked Charles.
"No he is," Charles said pointing to Logan.
"Come with me and meet your daughters."
Logan followed the nurse over to the far corner where they took the babies. One of the
nurses put a small pink bundle in his arms. He looked down and was totally amazed. The
infant in his arms made Rogue and Gambit's baby look huge. This little one was about half
the size of Angelique. Logan stared at the tiny face and was totally captivated. A small
yawn escaped the tiny mouth and tiny fingers moved about as if they were searching for
something to grab on to. Logan took a finger and placed it in the tiny palm. Tiny fingers
closed and held the finger.
"We need to take her now sir. She needs to be hooked up to the monitors."
Logan nodded and handed the small infant back to the nurse. Another nurse handed him
another small bundle. He stared down at the second infant. She was already asleep.
"Bored with the world already?" Logan said quietly to the small infant. He
gently caressed one of the small cheeks.
"Sir?"
He looked at the nurse who had just handed him the second baby. He nodded and handed the
tiny bundle back to her. He was watching the babies with the nurses when the sound of a
loud, steady beep filled his ears.
"She's crashing!" he heard one of the doctors yell.
Emptiness filled his insides and a cold, icy feeling gripped his heart and threatened to
never let go.
