Using the Syringe |
Many times when our cavies are sick, we have to feed them with a syringe or administer medication with a syringe. Sometimes we aren't sure how exactly to use the syringe. Some people say to restrain the guinea pig in a towel. However, I have found my own 2 ways to do it. |
ON THE BACK |
One way to administer liquids with the syringe is by laying your cavy on their back across your lap. Gently place your left hand (if you're right-handed) around the back of their neck and put your forefinger and thumb underneath their jaw. Now, using your other hand hold the syringe and carefully stick the tip of the syringe behind the incisors. Gently squeeze a small amount of liquid into your cavy's mouth. When your cavy makes a chewing motion, that means they're swallowing. DO NOT give them too much at once because they could aspirate (inhale the liquid) and die. Since cavies feel vulnerable on their backs, this isn't the BEST method. You may have to let them get up a few times while you're administering medication. However, it did work for me. |
ON YOUR SHOULDER |
Another way to use the syringe involves putting the piggie on your shoulder. Using your left hand (if you're right- handed), gently wrap your hand around the body of your guinea pig. Hold them upright (head towards the ceiling and feet towards the floor) and rest their back on your left shoulder. This method works better than the "On the Back" method because the cavy doesn't feel as vulnerable. |
If you have any questions about administering medication with a syringe--ask your vet. Do not rely solely on what I have told you since I am not a trained professional. |
