Dick Wolf's anticipated third installment of the "Law & Order" franchise, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," has begun production in New York City.
Vincent D'Onofrio leads the cast that includes Courtney B. Vance, Kathryn Erbe and Jamey Sheridan in the NBC series.
"Law & Order: Criminal Intent," has a 13 episode order and is slated for the 2001-02 season. The show will break from the traditional "Law & Order" format by revealing the point of view of the criminal, as well as the police and prosecutors.
As with "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," the new series will have a shared broadcast window with USA Network.
"Vincent, Courtney, Kathryn and Jamey are all brilliant actors," Wolf said. "Vincent's talent and experience will add a powerful dimension to the new show and his decision to make 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' his first foray into series television is extraordinarily gratifying. Courtney, Kathryn and Jamey are all currently in very high profile film projects which can only help bring viewers to our new series."
"For the past decade, Dick Wolf has been one of television's pre-eminent creative forces and we look forward to this latest extension of the 'Law & Order' franchise. Dick, along with Rene Balcer, will provide their trademark expertise with a deliciously different twist that we hope will prove to be the benchmark law enforcement series for the next decade," added NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker.
