"Are you from outer space?" - Professor Rumford "No. I'm more from what you'd call inner time." - The Doctor.

THE STORY

The Doctor, Romana and K-9 are led by the tracer to the Nine Travellers, a circle of standing stones in present-day England, but they are unable to locate the third segment. They meet elderly female archaeologist Professor Emilia Rumford and her assistant Vivien Fay, who are studying the circle, and learn that there has been a variable number of stones over the centuries. The Doctor encounters a group of druids led by a man called de Vries and narrowly avoids becoming a blood sacrifice. De Vries is later killed by one of the stones from the circle, really an Ogri, a silicon-based lifeform that lives on blood.

Miss Fay is in reality the Cailleach, a being worshipped by the Druids for four thousand years. She transports Romana to a spacecraft in hyperspace, but the Doctor follows and accidently releases two justice machines, the Megara. Because breaking the seal on their compartment is a crime, the Megara sentence the Doctor to death. He manages to trick them into knocking Miss Fay unconscious, so when they read her mind, they discover she is Cessair of Diplos, the criminal they were originally sent to try. Having established her guilt, she is transformed into an additional stone in the circle. The Doctor manages to grab her necklace, the third segment of the Key to Time before the sentence is carried out.
