Life sentence for organiser of Maluku attack
An Indonesian man has been sentenced to life in prison for organising a deadly attack
on a karaoke bar two years ago.
A court in Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, said Fatur Datu Armen was behind
the attack on the bar at Hative Besar that killed three people in 2004. A second
person is also on trial over the attack. Prosecutors had sought a death sentence for
Armen, a religious teacher from South Sulawesi who is also said to be a member of at
least two extremist groups, including Laskar Jihad. Laskar Jihad has been blamed for
sectarian violence in Maluku province since 1999 which has killed more than 5,000
people.
