Del Alwi asks president to move Maluku capital from Ambon to
Seram
Ambon (ANTARA News) - A noted veteran independence fighter, Des Alwi (79), has
asked President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to make a study on the possibility of
moving Maluku's provincial capital from Ambon to Seram on account of the present
city's limited supporting capability.
"Imagine that Ambon with an acreage of 377 square kilometers has a population of
about 51,000 per kilometer, so no wonder the city will be prone to traffic jams in the
future. I have already conveyed the request for a study of the city's movement," he
said here on Saturday.
Des Alwi who was formerly Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia also urged President
Yudhoyono during a stopover at Ambon's Pattimura airport enroute to Namlea, capital
of Buru district, in the framework of attending a grand harvest.
By moving Maluku's provincial capital to Seram, Ambon could be made a center of
educational and economic activities.
He said the President received the idea by giving directives to Maluku administration
to follow up the requested study on the possbility of the move.
"It's time to study the proposed movement of the provincial capital to Seram island
which has an acreage of about 18,625 square kilometers thus making it possible to
develop various sectors on a large scale," he said.(*)
