Indonesia's Muluku Hopes To Export Fresh Fruit To US, China
AMBON, Jan 17 Asia Pulse - A fresh fruits distributor in Maluku is exploring the
possibility of selling fresh fruits yielded by this province to the United States and
China in the fourth week of this month.
The fresh fruits distributor, Jusuf Rumatoras, said here Monday that the fresh fruits to
be sent to the US and China's market cons! ist of mangosteen, gandaria and various
other fruits specific to Maluku.
A container ship bringing apples, grapes and oranges from the US and China which is
expected to enter Yos Sudarso port here on January 23, will return to those countries
carrying Maluku's specific fruits, he explained.
Rumatoras disclosed that Maluku has explored the possibility of importing fresh fruits
from the US and China, and a ship carrying three containers of fruits arrived at Yos
Sudarso port in November, last year.
"We are determined to balance fresh fruits import from the US and China by offering
our own fruits in fresh condition to those countries," he revealed, and further explained
that a cold storage unit with a capacity of two containers to facilitate fruit export and
import is currently still under construction at Yos Sudarso port.
Rumatoras expressed confidence that fresh fruits business in Maluku is promising.
He said the step is supported by the Maluku provincial administration and the
provincial trade service to anticipate the free trade era and to show to the world that
Maluku has returned to normal and become conducive to investment after the
outbreak of a social conflict in the region on January 19, 1999. (ANTARA)
