THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS - Report No. 508

1. NUN STABBED TO DEATH - A tragic happening occurred in the FDNSC Congregation Sisters' convent on the Jalan Patttimura, Ambon. At about 0.1 a.m. in the early morning of March 10, Sister Yermina Jamlean (33), when leaving her room for a moment, stumbled on an intruder, who consequently stabbed her with a knife. During the following operation in hospital she passed away. There is no trace still of the perpetrator.

2. FKM LEADER FREED - Semmy Waeleruny, juridical leader of the separatist FKM Movement (Front Kedaulatan Maluku = Moluccas Sovereignty Front) has been released as the legal time of confinement in Ambon (300 days) has elapsed. During this time no witnesses could be produced to convince the court of irregularities that deserve any penalty.

In December 2003, FKM leaders Alex Manuputty and Semmy Waeleruny were sentenced to four years confinement by the District Court of North Jakarta. Alex Manuputty managed to escape to the United States then, where he is still living in exile. Waeleruny was allowed to leave jail in Jakarta in May 2005. However, upon arriving in Ambon on May 4, 2005, he was immediately apprehended, because - thus was stated - he had been involved in preparing an RMS celebration to be performed on April 25, 2005 (see Report 477).

3. AMBON STUDENTS STRIKE - A vehement protest was launched at the State Islamic Institute (STAIN) in Ambon, on March 6; 500 students told lecturers and staff to leave the campus. The protesting students sealed off the campus, forcing 3,000 students to miss classes. Police attempted to intervene to end the action, but students attacked the policemen and drove them from the campus. Ibrahim Ruhunussa, president of the students association, said students were angry over a 100 percent increase in tuition fees and the illegal fees collected by several lecturers. A university official, Hasan Lauselang, said the institute could not discuss the protest since rector Mohammad Attamimi was in Jakarta for a meeting.
