THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS - Report No. 511
1. MURDERER SISTER YERMINA DETAINED - Two weeks after a nun of the FDNSC
Congregation, Sister Yermina Yamlean, was stabbed with a knife, causing her to die
several hours later, the police succeeded in arresting three of the four people that are
thought to be the nightly intruders in the Sisters' Convent. The three, whose initials
are M, SP, SS, were caught in their respective homes at about 09.00 pm on March
23, on three different places. A fourth managed to escape. According to the
information that the police communicated to "Ambon Ekspres" daily newspaper, the
motive of the murderers was solely criminal (burglary). They apparently panicked
when Sister Yermina came out of her room, so that M. stabbed her with a knife in the
abdomen.
2. CACHE OF EXPLOSIVES UNCOVERED - At least 500 kilograms of active
grenades and the like, wrapped up in nine sacks, were discovered in the village of
Passo, Ambon island, on March 21. They had originally been found by different people
at different places, then sold to an old-iron dealer in Passo, who had not realized that
all of the stuff was active and most dangerous.
3. EARTH TREMBLES ON BURU ISLAND - There seems to be no end to the
frightening tremors and trembles that are felt on the island of Buru. In the early
morning of March 21 - people were still asleep - a moderate earthquake of 4,5 on the
Richter Scale rocked the island. There have been no reports of any damage yet.
4. SUCCESSION - Military Chief Commander (Pangdam) XVI Pattimura, Maj.General
TNI Syarifudin Sumah, has been replaced by Brigader General TNI Sudarmaidy S. A
major task that is entrusted to the TNI is: safeguarding the outlying islands and islets
at the frontier where Indonesian territory borders with the neighbouring countries of
Australia, Timor Leste (East Timor) and - to the North - the Philippines.
