Moluccan Nite: Justified tribute for the talents and dedication
Evi Mariani, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
Java Jazz (JJ) Festival is presenting two tributes to two musicians on its "Moluccan
Nite"; one for John Pattirane and another for the late Chris Kayhatu.
"John Pattirane's songs are well-known to the Indonesian public, and some are even
taught in elementary schools as part of Indonesia's traditional heritage," festival
website www.javajazzfestival.com reveals.
"Songs such as Tanase, Goro-gorone, Buka Pintu, Huhate and Ayo Mama are just a
few of the songs produced by `Grandpa', a prominent figure who had been writing
songs since Indonesia's independence war," the website adds.
Meanwhile, Kayhatu was the founder and a keyboardist in the band, Funk Section. He
also wrote many popular songs like Rame Rame, Tersiksa Lagi and Enggo Lari.
However, music enthusiasts, jazz ones in particular, know that apart from the two
musicians, there are, and were, still a lot more musicians hailing from Maluku who
have made Indonesian music history unique.
The talent and dedication of musicians from Maluku has spanned a long time, with
people like the late Nick Mamahit, Harvey Malaiholo, Utha Likumahuwa, Bob Tutupoli,
Ruth Sahanaya and Lita Zein, on top of Pattirane and Kayhatu and dozens of others.
Were they all to gather and perform on one stage, the organizer would have to divide
them into several large ensembles because of their diverse talent and instruments.
No one would dare to argue whether Maluku deserves a tribute, be it from JJ's Peter
Gontha or from thousands of fans buying their albums.
It seems that music, dancing and entertainment are in their blood. And they have a
special bond of their homeland where the beaches are all beautiful.
It is not surprising that Moluccan Nite will be one of the most anticipated events in JJ,
which, in reality, features international artists, who are usually more appealing to
Indonesian audiences.
Doubtless, the night on Sunday, March 5, will be special.
Besides Ambonese-Dutch Daniel Sahuleka and band Massada, the stage will sparkle
with stars like Bob Tutupoli, Harvey Malaiholo, Ruth Sahanaya, Andre Hehanusa,
Glenn Fredly, Jopie Latul, Utha Likumahuwa, Jopie Latul, Lita Zein, Shakila, and
Margie Segers.
Young and new stars Ello and Mike "Indonesian Idol" Mohede will also have a chance
to appear with both legends and seasoned performers.
Moluccan Nite Telkomsel Hall at Jakarta Hilton Convention Center Sunday, March 5,
starting at 2:30 p.m.
