11 die in Ambon after boat sinks
AMBON, Maluku: An inter-island passenger boat capsized in Falabisahaya waters in
Sula Islands regency, North Maluku province Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 11
passengers on board. Eleven other people on board of the boat survived the disaster.
The boat, which left Fala for Tubang village, was reportedly hit by huge waves of two
meters high 15 minutes after leaving the port.
"The boat capsized after being hit by huge waves due to bad weather," chief of
Babulah military command, Col. Yudi Zanibar, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
The passengers on board the boat were all employees of timber company PT Barito
which is based in Sula Islands. They were leaving for Tubang village to attend a
wedding reception. -- JP
