Ambon Police told to find shooters
AMBON, Maluku: Student activists on Saturday demanded police in Ambon find
those officers responsible for allegedly firing into a crowd, injuring a university student.
Ilham Sipahutar, coordinator of the Democratic Front, a group made up of Pattimura
University students, criticized the police for failing to identify the shooters.
During clashes last week between police officers and military soldiers, several officers
allegedly fired toward a crowd of people, injuring Saiful Wakano.
"Unfortunately, the case remains unsolved and there are indications (the police) are
trying to protect those responsible," Ilham told The Jakarta Post.
He urged Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen. Adityawarman and Ambon Police chief Adj.
Sr. Comr. Leonidas Braksan to keep their promise to arrest the shooters. "We hope
the police, and the military, show good will in solving this case, since a civilian was
shot because of their clash," he said.
Separately, the head of the Islamic Student Association in Ambon, Husein
Marasabessy, condemned the security personnel for putting civilians in danger by
their actions.
"This case should be dealt with transparently because it involves a civilian. Don't cover
this up and try to protect guilty soldiers and officers," he said. -- JP
