Prosecutors demand 10-year sentence for key terror suspect
JAKARTA (AP): Prosecutors Thursday asked for a 10-year prison term for a
suspected militant accused of funneling arms and cash to two key Southeast Asian
terror suspects.
Abdullah Sunata was arrested last July along with several other militants in a sweep
of Central Java province. He is believed to be an important member of the
al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror group.
Chief prosecutor Maulana Kusuma told the South Jakarta District Court that Abdullah
had "violated the anti-terror law" by acquiring firearms and giving one to Noordin Top,
another reputed JI leader.
The same court on Thursday sentenced Djoko Triprihanto, a militant who was nabbed
in the sweep along with Sunata, to three years in prison for lending a motorbike and a
laptop computer toNoordin in April 2004.
Maulana also said that Abdullah gave Indonesian Umar Patek, a JI member believed
to be in Philippines, Rp 15 million (US$1,500) to buy the guns.
A verdict is expected in the trial in the coming weeks.
Jemaah Islamiyah is accused of a series of bombings and failed plots in Southeast
Asia, including two strikes on the resort island of Bali that killed more than 220
people, most of them foreign tourists. (**)
