Two more declared suspects in Bali bombings
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
Police have named two more suspects and arrested five other men in their ongoing
investigation into the Oct. 1 Bali bombings, which killed 23 people.
The two new suspects, which bring to 10 the number of suspects named in recent
days, have been identified as Subur Sugiarto and Abu Sayaf. The five men who were
arrested have been identified only as Tarjo, Harry, Prapto, Ibtu and Catur.
Subur and Abu, who were arrested on Jan. 18 and Jan. 19, respectively, have strong
links to Noordin M. Top, the country's most wanted terrorist, who is believed to have
masterminded the 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings.
"The police have collected evidence and testimony that supports the allegation,"
National Police spokesmen Brig. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam said Monday.
The officer said Subur had been proven to be the cameramen for a VCD found in the
hideout of Azahari, Noordin's compatriot, in Malang, East Java. Additionally, Subur
helped Noordin recruit men for terrorist attacks.
The police also found guns allegedly belonging to Abu Sayaf that were used in a bank
robbery to raise funds for terrorist attacks.
"He (Abu Sayaf) owned the guns, but he ordered Ardi to commit the robbery," said
Anton, referring to Ardi Wibowo, one of four men earlier named suspects.
Some of the suspects have confessed to carrying out other crimes, including
robberies, in their efforts to fund terrorist attacks.
Meanwhile, the five men arrested in Central Java over the weekend are being
interrogated by the police. Investigators believe that Noordin is hiding somewhere in
Central Java, where he has been organizing and recruiting men for new attacks.
The Central Java Police declared four men as terrorist suspects last week. They are
Joko Suroso, Ardi Wibowo, Aditya Triyoga and Puji Sriyono, who allegedly helped
Noordin plan the triple suicide bombings on Bali on Oct. 1, 2005.
In all, police have arrested 15 people linked to the attack, including the first four
suspects -- Anif Sulhanuddin, Mohamad Cholili, Abdul Aziz, and Dwi Widianto -- who
were arrested in Bali. The rest were picked up in Central Java.(09)
