AG told to delay Poso executions
JAKARTA: Calls are mounting for prosecutors to delay the execution of three men on
death row for their roles in several murders during the conflict in Poso, Central
Sulawesi.
Former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid and a group of activists separately
said they believed the wrong men had been found guilty of the crimes.
The group went to the Attorney General's Office (AGO) on Wednesday to request a
stay of execution for the three men.
They told Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh that the three convicts -- Fabianus
Tibo, Dominggus Da Silva and Marinus Riwu -- were not the masterminds of the
murders but were merely "illiterate farmers".
Arifin Assagaf, a spokesman for the group, said the authorities should instead
investigate 16 other men, whom he believed were responsible for the killings. He
refused to mention their names.
He said the three convicts were not the perpetrators but were key witnesses.
AGO spokesman Mashyudi Ridwan said his office had no plans to delay the
executions after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono turned down the convicts'
requests for clemency.
Tibo and his two colleagues were sentenced to death for their roles in bloody riots in
Poso from June 23-30 in 2000. (09)
