Storm survivors still in shelters
AMBON, Maluku: At least 700 residents of East Seram are still living in makeshift
shelters after fleeing their homes earlier this month in the face of flooding.
"Residents of East Seram are still in shelters. Many of the people who sought shelter
in the forest and hills are still reluctant to return to their homes, because they're still
traumatized," the spokesman for the East Seram People's Awareness Forum, Udin
Rumasilan, said.
According to residents, the local administration has not given them any assistance.
"The administration is discriminatory. It has not provided any of the survivors of the
flooding on Seram island with any assistance," said the chairman of the Nusa Ina
Muslim Brotherhood Association, Irwan Patty.
The vice secretary to the provincial administration, Rahman Soumena, acknowledged
that assistance had yet to be distributed to residents affected by the flooding. -- JP
