BATHROOM SCRIBBLING
Scribbled in feigned haste by the Circle of Serenity

Logan. Now more than ever you must learn to keep yourself from falling asleep. You may of course sleep in the conventional sense, but beware of waking sleep. It is much more harmful than you think. Especially in NSR.

There are several key signs that you'll have to look for. Signs of sleep. When you find yourself doing these things you should know that you are sleeping and you must make efforts to awaken yourself.

The signs are:

  1. Dreaming. This of course is the primary action of all sleep, including conventional sleep. Dreams are the mind's way of orienting itself with respect to the impressions it receives. The deeper the sleep one is in, the less one's dream corresponds to reality. In conventional sleep, this poses no real problem because the sleeper is basically motionless. In waking sleep, however, the sleeper is physically walking around, driving, playing tennis, getting pulled over by the cops, etc. The danger here can be great.
The waking dream is the means by which waking sleep is self-sustaining. The cycle can begin at any point. Here is one possible order: 1) You daydream that your girlfriend hates you, wants to cheat, 2) the dream conjures fears and emotions that keep you distracted from your immediate surroundings, 3) walking down the street with your girlfriend, she waves to a young man you've never seen before, 4) the dream of her betrayal incorporates the impression (of your woman waving to a strange man) TO FIT THE DREAM and continues conjuring imaginary painful scenarios, 5) more emotional pain and fears come, and you go deeper into sleep and further removed from your immediate surroundings, 6) Your girlfriend notices that you've withdrawn, and because she liked you for your fun-loving nature, begins to lose interest now that that part of you has atrophied in the face of waking nightmares. 7) Your dream then receives justification from outward impressions (that is, you notice her loss of interest) and your concomitant distress contributes to even more realistic waking dreams as you fall into a deeper form of waking sleep -- and so on. This cycle can begin from any point. As you can see, it is dreadfully self-perpetuating -- so beware!
  2. Picking nose. This is a thoroughly disgusting practice that both men and women often engage in when they are in relatively private surroundings. It is a sign of waking sleep and -- get this -- it is also made necessary by waking sleep. That's right Logan, waking sleep is the very thing that creates hard mucus to crust the inside of your nose. It is not clear how this happens. But heavy amounts of mucus crusts are a sure sign that you've been daydreaming, which in turn leads to the compulsive tendency to want the nose clean of such crusts. Whenever you feel your fingers go in that area, an alarm should go off in your head. Get a tissue and blow as much out as you can. You may not stick your fingers in there ever. (According to the Lone King: legend says that Nelly -- the Whore-Goddess who sees all -- loathes to observe a man doing it and she will smite him for it.)
NOTE: Nose picking can easily double the size of your nose, giving it that bulbous, inflamed look. Many nose pickers would be quite attractive were it not for their sleepy habit. You will recognize a nose picker by his/her lopsided, meaty, fat nose.
  3. Looking in the mirror. Mirror staring is also a red flag. As with the other signs, it is both a sign and a perpetuator of waking sleep. The mistake is to think that to stare longer at yourself in the mirror will give you a more accurate picture then a short glimpse. But this is not true. Since mirror staring also causes sleep, the image will slowly recede into an imaginary dream image that corresponds less and less to what is actually being reflected back to you. Short glimpses are more accurate. But all mirror-looking is essentially a form of sleep. So look out for it.
ADDENDUM: The quality of your mirrored image is primarily a testament to your emotional state. If you are feeling self-confident and happy, your image will please you. Conversely, if you're depressed, your image will look ugly to you.
  4. Worrying, Anger, Regret, Disappointment, and other negative emotions will always either cause or arise from (and thus perpetuate) waking sleep. Therefore whenever you find yourself burdened by negative emotions KNOW that you are sleeping -- and try not to lose yourself in (i.e., identify with) them. These emotions usually signal a need for conventional sleep.
  5. Staring for more than one moment at an attractive woman. This is also a form of sleep. It can also create sleep. One look should be enough. Moreover, if you want to talk to her and you do not, you also run the risk of falling into a waking slumber. Anytime you fight an urge, sleep will loom. So be ready.
  6. Talking shit. By this I mean criticizing a person behind his or her back. Whenever you are entrenched within negative emotions (a form of waking sleep), it is comforting to shift the onus of one's emotional state onto the so called "lame person(s)" in your life. This is invariably a form of self-justification and while criticizing another does momentarily lessen the effect of a negative emotion (by replacing it with righteous indignation), it only serves to obscure the real reason you do it.
The only reason a person bothers you enough to talk shit about him/her is because you are asleep within some negative emotion. A person who is truly awake is affected little by other people and barely notices faults in others. The faults of a particular person are in fact irrelevant to the wakeful person. So beware of shit-talking -- basically, refrain from saying things that you could not stomach saying to the person's face.
  7. Difficulty breathing. If waking sleep becomes especially pronounced, you will find that you are taking shallow breaths. Deep breathing is a good way to wake up. The inability to breathe deeply signals a need for conventional sleep.
  8. Smoking tobacco. This was originally done (by the Native Americans) as a violent means of bringing one in communion with higher worlds. Tobacco weakens the will and allows for many of the miracle buffers to fall away if only for a moment. However, the tobacco-influenced mind is in a state of highly suggestible waking sleep. So only use tobacco in private moments for spiritual communion. We strongly recommend that you do not smoke in front of others for the simple reason that it is bad to encourage others to smoke frivolously -- and for the more serious reason that smoking promotes waking sleep and it is VERY important to be awake in the presence of others (and to keep others awake in your presence). Craving a cigarette without true spiritual aspirations is an illusory, sleep-derived desire. A person who is awake never wants a cigarette unless he/she is alone and is determined to commune with higher worlds. Nicotine (by itself), however, is helpful in keeping one awake and is available from other (non-tobacco) sources in your current psychohistorical moment-world. Try the patch or nicotine gum.
  9. Stealing -- especially stealing small things, from work, friends' houses, convenience stores, etc. -- is a clear sign of waking sleep. Be on the lookout for moments when you casually steal in this way. Often, you won't notice what you've done until it's too late. But just know, if you're stealing you're asleep and you need to wake up. (Stealing big things -- large sums of cash or the like, is also the result of a deep form of waking sleep -- but in these cases the thief is so far gone that there is little to say to him/her.)
  10. Dirty Jokes. Joking is fine, but when you make dirty jokes you are falling victim to the abnormalities mentioned in Whoremanual IX. Men who make dirty jokes about females are disrespecting their female soul. Women who make dirty jokes are overindulging their male soul. Another clear sign of sleep, Logan.
