The Lonely Boys Story

No
one can remember where the boys came from or where they went. They just
seemed to appear, change the way we thought about everything & then
moved on, leaving us open-mouthed with an unnerving sense that we would
never see the likes of them again.
"I remember Saturday nights at the Anchor & Hope or The Chevron,Thursdays at the Star, Fridays at the Roxy, Tuesdays at the Bouzy Rouge, standing in the middle of the sweating, twisting throng of happy people, grinding their bodies together and singing along with every word (long before mosh pits started filling hospital casualty wards). Bobby Valentine in full flight with the Lonely's unique version of "Twist & Shout", Eddie Twang riffin' & Twistin' thru "Red River Rock", Ronnie Romance poundin' the skins & giving his all, asking the sixty-four thousand dollar question; "Do You Wanna Dance?" and of course Frank C Slade Jr., the founder of the band, keeping it all together with his fixed grin & easy rockin' style that made him a legend in his own lifetime. Those days are gone forever, but, they will live in our memories as some of the happiest days of our lives." Johnny - The Fall Guy 1996 |
He came from nowhere - the new kid on the block. Wailin' sax, tight slax & a voice like liquid nails. The partymeister, he was the master of the 4 ring circus that was the Lonely Boys. His heart-rending "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling", narcisstic "Personality" or driving rendition of "Runaround Sue" would bring the house down!
"Cha, Cha, Cha" says Bobby

Eddie
Twang
The driving rhythms, the scintillating lead of the Twang's guitar work wove the fabric of the boys sound. With a seemingly endless palette of sounds & styles he could leap from the effervescence of "Walk don't run" to the ethereal "Sleepwalk" and make it look easy! "The Twang is the Thang" |

Ronnie "Do ya love me?", Ronnie pleads with the front row of swooning girls while Bobby pounds at the kit in back. It's a rare trip to the front of the stage, cos behind those skins is where R. Romance belongs - puttin' down the 4 on the floor that drives the Lonelies along.

Frank C.
Slade Jr. The founder, the father, the bass player. It was Frank's idea to put a rockin', twistin' little combo together to lift the spirits of a public subjected for too long to the repetitious rantings of the 70's & early 80's. He was right on. History will show it, we all know it, yo' never gonna slow it.
Thanks Frank |
