Moreh Musing

Shalom,

Just recently, I met somebody who was considering joining BBYO (a Prospective, as we call it.) Being Chapter Lorac's Moreh (membership officer), I felt a responsibility to appeal to him to join us, to sell our glorious chapter. So I said to him: "Join." Now I thought I had put in a pretty good effort, but everybody else thought it needed a little more. So I went home and I thought and thought and finally worked out my new pledge. If you are a prospective member, please read this, and hopefully it will convince you. If you are already a member of Lorac, read it and tell me how I did on my second go. And here it is:

BBYO is about leadership, community service, forming lasting relationships with new friends, and learning the joys of our Jewish heritage and culture. Officially. In reality, it has a lot to do with meeting girls. I have met a lot of girls. None that want to go out with me, but nonetheless, I have met them. There are about 65 or 70 of them. Now, there are 85 or 90 boys, so you could argue that the odds aren't in your favour, but most of the guys are pretty ugly so you have a good chance. Among the events we hold are dances, where the girls invite their friends. Now, I know you want to join already, but there's more. Yes, I'm talking about the guys. The guys are here for the same reasons that you are. Primarily to meet girls, but also because they want to hang out and make new friends. This means that most of them are cool guys who will be friendly and accept you. Will they really accept me? you may ask. Well if you ask this, it means that you have a self-confidence problem. But the fact is, I was elected to an executive position (Moreh, as you would know if you'd been paying attention) after I had been a member for only a month and a half. When Jeff Justiz was made Chapter President, he had been a member less than a year. So you will be accepted very quickly. Another selling point is athletics. We like sports. We particularly like floor hockey, which we play in our own house league, each chapter having its own team. Lorac, and we like to brag about this, has appeared in the finals three times in the last four years, winning the championship two of those times. There are no try-outs or cuts; all you need to join is the love of the game (and fifteen dollars, but that's a technicality). As well as sports, we like food. That is why, every Wednesday, after hanging out at the office (4700 Bathurst, 1 block north of the BJC, drop by one Wednesday between 5 and 6 and check it out for yourself) we go and eat. We go to McDonalds or Burger King, and on special occasions like birthdays, to Jack Astors, Pickle Barrel and others. Girls, Friends, Sports, and Food. This is why you should join BBYO. If you need more convincing, or just have a question or want to talk, e-mail me at or ICQ# 22462451.

Now, I must turn and address the members of Lorac. I am pleased to announce that I have taken my first great action as your newly elected Chapter Moreh. This action is delegating. Specifically, I delegate to you the task of finding prospective members (friends, family, classmates . . . you could even stand on a street corner with pamphlets if that's your thing) and convincing them to come down to the office on a Wednesday or to come with you to a program. Remember that we are gearing up for the Club 36 award, and the number of members right now, unless I'm very mistaken, is 23. That means we need 13 more people, and if each of us convinces just half a person to join, we will be up to 34.5. Another 1.5 people after that and we will have reached our goal. It's that easy, so get to work and make it happen.

With love and pride in food, sports, BBYO, food, delegating, Lorac, food, and food,
Brian Gottheil
