Gundam Wing Newtypes

In my opinion three pilots in Gundam Wing are newtypes.  Technically there are not supposed to be any newtypes in Gundam Wing since it is not in the UC era.  However lots of stuff in Gundam Wing is based off its UC couterpart Mobile Suit Gundam.  For example: Zechs' uncanny resemblance to Char, the rivalry between Heero and Zechs is like the rivalry between Amuro and Char, and the ending of both series is similar.  Now you may ask what are newtypes.  I will tell you in layman's terms, but for more info I suggest you visit the Gundam Project

Before the One Year began in Mobile Suit Gundam, the Zeon Zum Daikun, the leader of Side 3 Colony predicted that a new breed of humans would emerge due to the colonization of space.  The need for communication over a vast distance would trigger this evolution.  During the One Year War, newtypes became a reality.  Duchy of Zeon ace pilot Char (the son of Zeon Zum Daikun) and the Earth Federation pilot Amuro Ray were revealed to be newtypes.  Being a newtype and a pilot turned out to be a deadly combination.

Like all newtypes they were gifted with extraordinary reflexes and intuition.  If that last sounds familiar then you are not mistaken.  It is true that there could be six pilots in Gundam Wing who could be considered this, but my evidence has shown there to be only three.  Below I will give you my evidence and theories.

Heero Yuy.  The first person that came to mind when you heard about a newtype.  He has extraordinary reflexes.  He was one of the three who mastered the Zero System, which is my mind is a scaled down version of the newtype system called the Pyscommu Sytem.  He realized Zechs was going to fire on the Earth all along instead of the other colonies.  While everyone else with the exception of Wufei was fooled by it.  He and Wufei where also the only ones who sensed Quatre more or less had gone bad.  While he was captured early on by OZ he showed superhuman abilities.  He could mask his vital statistics in the hospital.  Believe it or not, Heero is not the obvious choice.  You will have to keep reading to find out who is.

Chang Wufei.  His path involves protecting the weak, even though at one time he considered himself one of them.  He knew that Heero made a mistake by destroying the shuttle that was supposed to be an OZ shuttle.  It really was carrying the pacifist leaders of the Alliance.  Like Heero he knew Zechs was going to fire on the Earth and that Quatre was bad.  He can put himself into a sort of cryogenic stasis lock.  This could be because of his martial arts training, but I think it is a little of both.

Ok, hold back your laughter momentarily.  My most likely choice for being a newtype is Quatre Raberba Winner.  That's right, the same guy who went psycho in the Zero System.  The reason I picked him was because he more or less shows more psychic abilities than any of the other pilots.  When Heero self-destructed he felt Heero's pain and almost had a heart attack.  Later he mastered the Zero System and used it to help his comrades beat the Mobile Doll Zero System.  During this episode he made a psychic connection with Dorothy Catolonia.  Sure, she was using the Zero System as well, but there is no way that just a system can allow two people to communicate like that.  I think we where left out of a lot of that conversation between them.  Because when they were on Libra together they acted like they knew each other well and they were really never introducedtoe ach other that muich earlier.  In Endless Waltz is it said that Quatre also shares a psychic link with Sandrock, but that is yet to be seen.

The bottom line is that Wufei and Heero have a little bit of both of the newtype qualities.  Quatre has fast reflexes, but they seem to be not as fast as the others.  However he makes up for that with his psychic awareness and intuition.  You might want to know why I left out Zechs, Trowa, and Duo.  Well to be a newtype you would have to be born in space.  Zechs and Trowa were not.  Duo is an orphan so he could have been born on Earth or in space.  He also shows no intuition or psychic prominence.  His reflexes are there as well, but I kind of think it has more to do with his Gundams' speed and stealthiness.  Don't get me wrong, he is damn good, but he is no newtype in my opinion.  You might also be thinking, "What about Dorothy?"  Sure she did communicate with Quatre, but she was bornon Earth.

Only three pilots in my mind in the Gundam Wing universe can be considered newtypes.  I hope this piece was informative and enjoyable to read.
