Wing Zero - Wing Vulcans

There is some debate on the existence of the Wing Zero's wing vulcans in Gundam Wing. As you all may know from the section on the Wing Zero, I believe there is an error in that the machine cannons and wing vulcans are the same weapon system and I use a quote from Heero in episode 26 of Gundam Wing as proof. I have been told that the Japanese translation is indeed 'shoulder vulcans', translated from 'kata no barukan'. While the 'vulcan' part may suggest that the machine cannons are still possibly wing vulcans, the objective of this theory is to find new truths from evidence seen in Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz, which will be referred to later. Now, some time ago I observed two 'holes' on the front of the Wing Zero's shield, but I simply dismissed them as air intakes. After some discussion on a Gundam message board, another member posted that he also noticed the 'holes' in the Wing Zero's shield and asked if they were possibly weapons. This lead me to the notion that the shield might contain the mysteriously unknown and unused wing vulcans. The Wing Zero was created for use in space, and air intakes would prove futile. This theory is further comfirmed by the lack of a shield on the Hajime Katoki version of the Wing Zero as seen in Endless Waltz. The Katoki Wing Zero is not listed as having any sort of wing vulcan system, only two shoulder-mounted machine cannons. Do note however that a majority of weapons were dropped from most of the Gundams in Endless Waltz, and the wing vulcans may have been included in this refinement of the Wing Zero. Is it possible that the Wing Zero needed an additional weapon system while in neo-bird mode? If so, why was the original Wing Gundam not equipped with a similar system? These questions either support or dispute this theory. Another question to add from the first is, 'can the twin buster rifle be fired while in neo-bird mode?'. I would say most likely not as there is nothing to depress the trigger, and I have never witnessed the twin buster rifle being fired while mounted in neo-bird mode. This lack of weaponry would require a weapon system to be added and utilized while the Wing Zero is in neo-bird mode. The term 'wing vulcans' seems incorrect to me, 'shield vulcans' would be more appropriate. You can view the shield 'holes' from the title page on The Gundam Wing Informational Archive index page. Save and view the top image, its actual size is 800x600 resolution. |

Alternate Theory | |||
The term 'wing vulcans' would suggest that the Wing Zero's vulcans would be stored on or within the Wing Zero's wings, but there has been no evidence to support that data until recently. Having been contacted with scans from the Wing Zero model kit, there is a section inside the wing binders that could function as a gun barrel or at least a muzzle for the wing vulcans. To find images of this section is very difficult, but those with the Wing Zero model kit might be able to locate the referred to object. If the wing vulcans are retained in the interior of the wing binders, then the Wing Zero is able to use these while in neo-bird mode as they would be facing the frontal area of attack, and it would explain the general nonuse and lack of identification as these would not be readily visible unless scrutinized. It would also explain their removal from the Katoki Wing Zero as it was equipped with actual wings and not thrusters. Whether you choose to believe the lack of wing vulcans, the shield-based theory, or the wing binder-mounted theory, it matters not. To my knowledge, the Wing Zero never used them anyway and the wing vulcans were removed from the Wing Zero in Endless Waltz. |

Thanks to Warstar for involuntarily assisting me in making the connection between the Wing Zero's shield and the wing vulcans, and with providing the alternate theory evidence. Thanks to Mark from the Gundam Project for the correct translation of the original Japanese dialogue in episode 26 of Gundam W.
Additional Notes | |||
It has come to my attention that the Wing Zero can in fact fire its twin buster rifles while in neo-bird mode. This can be seen in episode 40, although the Wing Zero is never seen doing it again. |
