This article was written at the request of an unmarried man who has encountered many married Christian women in chat rooms. I will hasten to say I do not believe chat rooms are inherently wicked. But I can tell you they are a tool which can be used handily by the enemy.
Married women have no business talking privately with men in chat rooms, just as they have no business going to lunch or dinner or a movie with them. Sisters, we live in a fallen world, and in spite of good intentions or pure motives, one is playing with fire if she places herself in the private company of a man other than her husband.
Are the chatting woman lonely? Is fellowship with her husband broken? Perhaps her husband is an unbeliever and she struggles with the pitiful fallout of being unequally yoked. A conversation with another man in a chat room is not a fitting balm for one's spirit--a conversation with the Lord in one's prayer closet is.
Happily or unhappily married, God's way is for husbands and wives to cleave only to each other. A private chat room conversation is no different from a telephone conversation, except that the communication is achieved by typing rather than speaking. Would a woman's husband be pleased if men were phoning her home to visit privately with her? Would a wife be pleased if her husband was having private conversations with another woman?
If a wife is chatting with men, is she also revealing to them her dissatisfaction with her husband, her marriage? Is she uncovering her husband's sins before another man? Is she tapping into the God-given protective feelings men have for women and luring men to care for her...as she wishes her husband would?
Men have no business chatting with married women--none whatsoever. But the responsibility for a woman's cooperation lies squarely at her feet. If she builds a relationship with a man other than her own husband, even excusing it because her husband is failing to meet her needs or fulfill her desires, she may be entering into an adulterous relationship--if only in her mind and by her conversation. Is she sharing with another man the thoughts and emotions which should be reserved for her own husband? Is she giving him a piece of her heart? Remember, God's laws are written on our hearts now, and lusting the Lord calls "adultery" (Matthew 5:28). Is there adultery in the chatting woman's heart? Is she tempting men to commit adultery?
Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth,
and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.
Proverbs 30:20
Maybe the chatting woman has a good marriage with a strong foundation in the Lord. She should never make the mistake of believing her marriage is fireproof. There is no perfect man; there is no perfect woman. A wife should not flirt with the possibility of having her head turned in the direction of a man who may eventually appear to be more suitable than her own husband to meet her needs or fulfill her desires. The enemy is poised and ready to whisper in the ear of God's children. His whisper can and will become a roar if we listen.
Finally, it is good to be in fellowship with other women, and all the more so if circumstances in one's life or in one's marriage are presently difficult. The anonymity enjoyed in a chat room environment can sometimes enable one to be more open in their conversation. Nevertheless, wives would do well to maintain a conversational focus on what they can do to better follow the Lord and allow Him to minister to their needs and minister to others through them, rather than exposing and dwelling on the sins of their husbands. It may be of help to visit the article Submission.
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is;
but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Hebrews 10:25
