We own that set of children's Bible story books you see in the doctors' and dentists' offices. (We bought them before we knew anything about the author.) They're beautifully illustrated, and I'll sometimes read to the children from them before bedtime.Maverick is getting his first exposure to the books at age 3. He's delighted with the creation story, and at the end of each story he asks to read to me. Beginning with the first page in the book, he flips through the pages naming whatever is in the illustration on that page.
The evening we came to the creation of Adam and Eve was interesting. They hadn't sinned yet, so the artist's illustrations deftly placed Adam behind a shrub on each page. Maverick was a little taken aback, though, and exclaimed, "Naked Man!" Indeed, there stood Adam behind the shrubbery. As I turned the page to the first illustration of Eve (a full-page portrayal of her face), Maverick gasped and said in a hushed, reverent tone, "Beautiful woman!" That may have been precisely Adam's reaction.
That night as Maverick turned the pages to "read" the story to me, it went something like this: ". . . flamingo, hippopotamuth, theagull, Bambi, whinotheruth, naked man, naked man, beautiful woman, naked man. . ."
