9. December, 2000 : Stalker Continues To Harass Axl Rose.
|
Axl Rose Stalker Won't Let Up
Even behind bars, Axl Rose's determined stalker won't leave the Guns N' Roses leader alone.
The Ohio woman — sentenced to a year in jail last June for violating probation by entering Rose's Malibu, Calif., property — is now facing two misdemeanor charges for allegedly bombarding the rock star with letters.
Karen Jane McNeil, 39, is expected to enter a plea today at Malibu Superior Court. The misdemeanors — contempt of court and violating a court order — arose because the judge ordered her to have no contact with Rose, according to prosecutors.
McNeil has allegedly entered the singer's property numerous times in the past several years, even after a judge ordered her to keep 300 yards away in 1997. She has told officials that she believes she is Rose's wife and communicates with him telepathically.
Her letters most likely went unopened, as Rose prepares for the first gigs with his new lineup of Guns N' Roses; the singer is the only remaining original member of the group. The band will play the House of Blues on New Year's Eve in Las Vegas before heading to Brazil to play at the "Rock in Rio" concert.

UPDATE: Guns N' Roses To Play Vegas New Year's Show
By Brian Hiatt reports
Seven years after their last live performance, Guns N' Roses are expected to debut songs from their perpetually in-progress new album at a Las Vegas New Year's Eve concert, according to organizers.
But the show — the first for the band's current lineup — will most likely focus on Guns N' Roses classics.
"I heard them in rehearsals. ... [The old material] sounds substantially more powerful," GN'R manager Doug Goldstein said Wednesday (December 6).
"With two lead guitars, it just sounded so powerful."
The concert will be held at the Las Vegas House of Blues, and tickets — priced at $150 and $250 — went on sale online at noon Pacific time Wednesday at ArtistDirect (www.artistdirect.com). Any remaining tickets will be sold through Ticketmaster and at the House of Blues box office beginning Friday at noon Pacific time.
The band is scheduled to play shortly after 1 a.m. on January 1, apparently following a previously scheduled set by the Goo Goo Dolls.
"We've been rehearsing and recording — we just wanted to blow some smoke," Goldstein said. "What better place to do that than New Year's Eve in Las Vegas?"
Singer Axl Rose is the only remaining original member of Guns N' Roses. According to Goldstein, the rest of the lineup consists of veteran GN'R keyboardist Dizzy Reed, former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson, lead guitarists Robin Finck and Buckethead, rhythm guitarist Paul Tobias, and former Primus drummer Bryan "Brain" Mantia.
The band is also scheduled to play Brazil's massive Rock in Rio festival in January and plans to tour the United States in the summer.
Plans for the New Year's show came together as rumors swirled of the group's Rock in Rio appearance, according to Dennis Argenzia, director of marketing for HOB-Hewitt-Silva, the concert's promoter.
"We thought it would be good because it would be a small, exclusive thing. ... It came together really fast," Argenzia said.
The band's management company said in October that producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper) will help the band with its long-awaited new album, Chinese Democracy.

6. December, 2000 : Saul, err... Slash mistakingly referred to as a Jew in book.
|
Jews Who Rock...and Slash
Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are in it. So are Beck, Geddy Lee, and Bob Dylan. They're all listed in a book by Maverick Records exec Guy Oseary called Jews Who Rock. But the Jerusalem-born Oseary made a mistake in including Slash, who despite his Biblical given name of Saul, is not Jewish. "I'm English and African-American," says the guitarist, who's now on tour in Europe following a very successful trip to Asia with Snakepit. "It was insane," he said. "I've been there so many f*ckin' times and I've never seen them react like that. We had a show in Osaka, and we're three songs into the set and they broke the barricade, the big metal ones that stick down into the ground. We had to stop for a half hour while they built a new barricade. That in itself was unprecedented. We had mosh pits, people fainting . Even in the Guns days, playing the Tokyo Dome, I'd never seen that kind of response." Snakepit opened for AC/DC last summer and there's a chance the two bands will hook up again early next year for tours of Australia and another trip through the U.S.

5. December, 2000 : Slash Explains His Words On TV Show.

Slash explains his four-letter outburst on children's TV
Slash - Cock 'n' roll!
THE MAN GIVES A FUCK!
Former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist SLASH has spoken exclusively to NME.COM to explain his now legendary four-letter outburst on children's Saturday morning TV show CD:UK (December 2) claiming he was simply answering a question.
And the star also revealed he'd like to meet up at some point with Robbie Williams, like Slash a native of Stoke-On-Trent.
On CD:UK, Slash had been asked to explain one of the most rock and roll things that had happened to him and had began to tell the tale of oral sex in a nightclub. The interview was then cut short when he went on to tell presenter Cat Deeley how one of his pet iguanas had "bit the fuck" out of his hand.
"I said fuck. It was their fault. They asked me," he said. "They're a nice bunch of people but they asked me about an event that happened in New York. I think that's what the issue was. They asked me something that happened that was in the papers that I'd had sex with somebody in a bar. I said no, she was trying to give me a blowjob, that was it."
The guitarist continued: "So this is what happened, I'll be totally straightforward. I was going out with somebody, a porn star at the time. She inevitably killed herself and it was a sad story but she was a real fucking nutcase. She always wanted to have sex in public places. All of a sudden she would turn on. And I'm just not that kind of a guy. She went after me. But I had chaps on, she had two pairs of pants to get through. My security guard got me up and out of there before she got to do any real damage so it?s not really an issue. But the place was jam packed and MTV was there and so on and so forth, so they just saw this girl going at my pant strings. But I was out of there. I'm way too cool to be hanging out naked in a bar with some chick."
Of Robbie Williams, Slash added: "He's a pop guy, so I'm not real familiar with him, but I guess we're both from Stoke. It would be interesting to meet him sometime to see if we can compare Stoke-On-Trent stories or some shit."
You can see the Slash interview in full - and see exclusively his thoughts on the future of Guns N' Roses as well as Eminem - later this week on NME.COM.

Slash gave a short television interview on CD:UK. The catch is it was a kids TV show and it seems Slash didn't know that as he acted in his usual familiar self. Alice Cooper's Arizona home was burglarized on Saturday, while the pioneering shock rocker and his wife Sheryl were in Buenos Aires on tour with the London Rock Symphony. According to Cooper's manager, intruders broke into the home in the morning on Nov. 25 while Cooper's mother and three children were asleep in the house. The family members were not awakened during the break-in, though the thieves made off with more than $6,400 in memorabilia and clothing. According to Cooper's manager, the
thieves stole four gold records and a platinum record for Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion disc, for Cooper's duet with Axl Rose on "In The Garden." The Paradise Valley police department are conducting an investigation into the break-in . . .

25. October, 2000 : Guns n' Roses at Rock n' Rio!!!
|
This in from MTV news. This just sounds too good to be true!! Apparently, according to the head of Rock n' Rio, Guns n' Roses have come to an agreement to show up at the festival, which should mark Guns n' Roses return to the stage:
Guns N' Roses To Play Rock In Rio
It's been a long time coming, but the new Guns N' Roses is ready to rage in front of a live audience.
Roberto Medina, head of the Rock in Rio festival, told Brazil's Globo television network on Wednesday (October 25) that reclusive GN'R frontman Axl Rose has agreed to play the massive South America event Rock in Rio 3 in January with his new lineup.
A source close to the production confirmed the band's appearance is written in stone -- or at least as close as possible, given the no-show nature of the mercurial Rose.
Backing up Rose, the only remaining original GN'R member, are the previously announced new members -- bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarist Paul Tobias (formerly known as Paul Huge), keyboardist Dizzy Reed and guitarist Buckethead, as well as the band's latest addition, former Primus drummer Brain, who has replaced Josh Freese, the source said.
The source added that guitarist Robin Finck, who previously left the group to rejoin Nine Inch Nails, is also on board for the show.
Calls to Guns N' Roses' record label, Interscope, were not returned as of press time.
The band is scheduled to perform the closing set on January 14, the third day of the festival, which runs for seven days in two segments from January 12 to 21. Roughly 100 acts are expected to play the event, including Beck, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, Iron Maiden, 'NSYNC, Britney Spears and Foo Fighters.
GN'R has yet to turn up on the list of confirmed acts for Rock in Rio 3 that has been posted by organizers on the event's official Web site (at www.rockinrio.americaonline.com.br). However, the Rock in Rio camp did take to the site this week to announce that the Dave Matthews Band and Five have been added to the festival lineup.
GN'R has been working on what appears to be a never-ending project, "Chinese Democracy," for the past five years, most recently with producer Roy Thomas Baker. The current status of the album is not known.
Rose performed live for the first time in seven years when he sat in with former bandmate Gilby Clarke at an L.A.-area club in June.

SLAM OF THE WEEK!!! Slash's Snakepit Ain't Life Grand
S. L. Duff, Reviews Editor
Thursday, August 24, 2000 10:17 AM
Never one to concern himself with reinvention, Slash knows what he does, knows what his fans like, and wants to continue to thrive, learn, and improve within that realm. Make no mistake, that realm is straight-up, bluesy hard rock. As the twin guitar jams rip outta your stereo, the resultant, riffy, groovin', drivin' sound is familiar to anyone who has made Guns N' Roses part of their listening diet.
The album draws from a lot of sources, covering a variety of feels and nodding to numerous inspirations. In a way, it's a compact, more to-the-point Use Your Illusion -- ambitious, yes; sprawling, no. This more truncated version of the cinematic hard rock vision GnR were cultivating before they lost focus and lost each other works well for Slash. For starters, it allows him to showcase his mastery of traditional hard rock guitar. Face it, give this guy a Les Paul and a Marshall and he can make them speak a language of their own.
The new Snakepit is fronted by vocalist Rod Jackson. A few reviews of the group's opening spots on the current AC/DC tour that have knocked Jackson's gravelly tenor, citing it as overblown and out of date. This is a matter of taste. When I first heard the record, I honestly thought Slash had brought ex-Rainbow/Alkatrazz belter Graham Bonnet on board. Well, he hasn't, but Jackson is definitely cut from the same cloth, and if you like one, you'll like the other, and if you don't, well, there you go. Jackson is solid and reliable, on the record at any rate, and while the rock/blues tenor may seem utterly '70s, Slash's brand of rock is straight from the gospel of Aerosmith, so it fits, dig? Jackson also has come up with catchy, well-penned choruses, and his lyrics, while not particularly deep, are not retreads and flow well. Give the guy a chance. He might not be Axl, but what the Hell, he showed up!
As mentioned, the tunes cover a fair amount of ground within the template, so it doesn't get boring. Things kick right off with the stompin' "Been There Lately," about the drawbacks of being the host of the party house. "Ain't been there lately, there's no room!" Sounds like KNAC.COM studios. "Just Like Anything" brews up out of a conga/bongo-percolated brew into full-blown scorch - not unlike an updated "Sweet Emotion." The vibe gets downright gospel soul-shoutin' (in a Free/British-Blues/Rod Stewart-when-he-was-cool sorta way) on the gorgeous "Back to the Moment." Speaking of Rod the Mod, you can almost see another Les Paul/Marshall manipulator creating the gentle, silky slide lines: Jeff Beck. But forget all that, Slash is his own man, and while he doesn't hide his influences, he by know means leans on them, either. He is able to command center stage with as wide an electric guitar vocabulary as anyone currently bending strings.
A slight nod to post GnR rock comes in the nasty little hip hop intro to "Mean Bone." After the female rapped intro (Lil Kim, is that you?) the band gets back to business with a fairly standard heavy riff, with a pretty catchy chorus to pump your fist to. "Landslide," particularly the guitar arrangement, has a Guns feel, and Jackson gives all he has. The title track is a swingin' medium-tempo blues that grew out of a session with Iggy Pop. It has a great sway, accented by some understated but effective horn parts. This bloozy, boozy sing-along, designed to close down your favorite drinking hole, builds with some soulful backing vocals and a climbing guitar and bass line. Exiles on Vine Street!
The centerpiece of the album is an epic track called "Serial Killer." This one's pure rock psychodrama worthy of status alongside Cooper's "The Ballad of Dwight Fry" or the Gunner's own "Coma." Everyone in the group - which also includes Johnny Blackout on bass, guitarist Kerry Kelly and drummer Matt Laug - gets a significant amount of stretching room here. This track also shows Slash can shred along with most blazing six-string speed freaks, he just chooses to do it very infrequently. It's a great piece that expands the more often it's heard. The hour-long album is a very satisfying chunk of traditional hard rock music, done to perfection with no apologies. Those who have been waiting for something in this vein should be significantly blown away.
