Evie meets Lou in Canberra
It was on their 2001/2002 tour of Australia. Living in Canberra, as I
do, we don't get many matches (ACT does't have a team in the main comp)
so a big highlight of each summer is the annual PM's XI match held at
Manuka Oval, this match against New Zealand was on the 6th December 2001.This
was after the Test series had been completed.
Anyway, gettting to my encounter with Black Cap Lou Vincent, it wasn't
until after the lunch break, as the PM's XI team batted first and set
a low target of 218 off the 50 overs. Lou opened the batting and unfortunately
for the team (but fortunately for my encounter) got out for a 5th ball
duck. So, about 10 mins later they announced over the PA that Lou would
be signing autographs round the back of the main stand, my friends and
I jumped at the chance to go and get an autograph, so we wandered around
and found that we were the only people there so for a few minutes, until
others came we got to talk to Lou, we said "can we have photos with
you" he said "Not now but perhaps after the game."
We were greatly excited by this so we watched the game until the end,
which NZ won by 4 wkts, and then after the presentation we shouted out
and he turned and said "Geez, you girls are keen!" Then he called
out "Anyone have some deo, I don't want these girls to smell like
something rotten." Some guy threw him a can and he said "cheers,
mate" Lou then had photos with all 4 of us! "THANK YOU LOU"
we chourused. He said "All in a days work, (then to me, to my utter
embarassment said) You look like you are blushing (which I was but I also
very sunburnt)!"
Hope you like this encounter! I really hope Lou gets his form back! Go
Lou!
